the original name of the song was "Suicide," but columbia records made them change it to make it radio friendly. the title is a bit of a play on words - "Suey-cide." also: the guitarist Daron Malakian wrote it with lead singer, and he explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" its a great song with a great message, its timeless.
Daron denied the label not liking it bs. They just thought it was a lazy title. “Chop suey” was a wordplay coming from b&w gangster movies about death that fitted perfectly into the song and that’s it.
“Father into your hands I commend my spirit” and “Why have you forsaken me?” were two of the final seven phrases spoken to God by Jesus as he hung upon the Cross.
"The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" That's a quote from the writer (guitarist) Daron Malakian
I first heard of this band back in 2000. When I was still in the Air Force with the 4th FS 388th FW at HIll AFB, UT. I was hooked up to their song "Sugar", They were really popular during the time of Papa Roach. I still love to hear SOAD to this day they are very good.
So, two notes about the chorus SOAD typically does this where they completely pull the rug from under you when they swap from verse to chorus. The "Eastern Europe - Western Asia" feel comes from them playing on a bouzouki during the chorus, which is mostly played around the area of Greece/Turkey/Armenia.
I would love to see you react to Holy mountain by SOAD when you get a chance. It's an absolutely soul wrenching (When you know the context) and beautiful piece.
so, you can't go wrong with any SOAD song. Toxcitiy, Chop Suey, BYOB and Aerials are the "typical 4", although you could add Prison Song to make that 5, these are the ones that all the reactors react to and then they never do any other songs, which is a shame. Many people miss out on masterpieces like Holy Mountains, Soldier Side, Lonely Day, Tentative as well as their more.. out there songs, like Bounce, Vicinity of Obscenity, Cigaro and Violent Pornography. SOAD is a trip, they do serious stuff like Prison Song and then on the same album they have Bounce. SOAD is a wild ride of joy, switch ups, harmonies, messages and crazy fun. So please, don't be like other reactors, give their songs the attention they deserve and not just the super famous ones.
Radio/Video and Revenga are great songs too. They are so good at making awesome intros for their songs, especially the guitar driven intros. And I really wish that the “Solider side (intro)” was longer and evolved into an epic piece, that guitar riff is just awesomeness.
Don't know how I missed this upload! I love SOAD. They were going on a reunion tour before covid happened and released 2 songs last year. A lot of the songs have political or religious messages, and the songs are always great. Serg has one of the best voices in rock.
Ah one of my favourites, don't know how I missed you reacting to this but so glad you did! I need to see if I missed you watching serj tankians solo - Empty walls because that's brilliant!
This is what you called Rap Metal!!!! System of a down used their armenian style voice that are unique and creative specially mixing thr voice to the harmony from mellow to hard connecting to the voice of Serj the vocalist 2004-2010 Is the Era of Rap Metal Music LinkinPark LimpBizkit And Many More Band
My Favorite SOAD Songs: Spiders Chop Suey (This song) Boom B.Y.O.B. Chic 'N Stu Mr. Jack Soldier Side (Official Song) Arials A.T.W.A. Prison Song P.L.U.C.K. Peephole She's Like Heroin and Lonely Day.
When angels deserve to... DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job on nailing the Armenian influence. They are staunchly proud Armenian-Americans and introduced their fans to the Armenian holocaust as part of their concert experience.
Awesome Reaction, Your Knowledge of music and instruments is something I haven't seen on RUclips and Your Breakdown is Legit!! Subbed!! Also are you Bert Kreischer's aka "The Machine" more Intelligent and more handsome Younger Brother?! lol
If I meet someone who has never heard of SOAD before, and they listen to this song for the first time and don't think.. holy fuck... I know we'll never get past the small talk stage
If you haven't checked it out, there are two great System of a Down covers by Halocene, Lauren Babic and Violet Orlandi on youtube, one of them is Chop Suey.
My best mate in high school was, who i thought, the pinnacle of Metallica fanbase, had a copy of a dj remix of for whom the bell tolls which stood up remarkably. This, and Rammstein, were the rest of his favourite metal bands
Despite many don't, I believe the words depict the idea that angels, like Jesus, who came into physical form to eventually die on a cross was the message of "Why angels deserve to die", because even though Jesus knew what his fate was going to be, he allowed himself to be suicided by the Jewish Pharasees who hated him for suggesting he was of a Godly manner.
Great reaction, dude. You just got yourself a new sub :). You really should check out more of SOAD's songs, especially the ones on the album Toxicity or the song B.Y.O.B. I mean genuinely every album is awesome, but Toxicity is on another level imo.
Yeah speechless like most people who hear SOAD for the first time. Relax and enjoy masterpiece. Fact. 100 best hard rock vocals. Serj is vote 24 best hard rock/ metal singer.
Well, their Singer IS an Armenian, maybe you could hear that out. BUT! You have to check out later/earlier Songs from them, the most of the Songs from them is about the Armenian genocid, or the "great America". I love their Messages since i know them (2001). For the next you could check out ATTACK! or Prison Song/BYOB. Have fun!
Also, check out Fear Factory and Machine Head if you haven't already heard of these bands. IMO, Fear Factory is the pinnacle of their particular branch of metal.
Not sure if you will get this since this vid is a few months old. on the album version you can hear one of the band members say to another "We're rolling Suicide." right before the guitar intro starts. Given the og name was Suicide i think it's a neat little tidbit if you cath it. also If you havent yet, you should listen to Toxicity as well!
Well, I'd have a few albums worth of suggestions for SoaD songs, though as you already mentioned Aerials and it doesn't seem to be on your channel, I hope you get to do that at some point.
I know this is an old react, but, a european can get the armenian influencie much easier, yet he did it flowlessly, thatd why i love to watch you. Plus you're right, there are a por of bands that you can relate to other bands, SOAD, is One of the few bands from the "new metal" era that i really keep enjoying, very different from everything.and all albuns are great, there is no álbum from them.that fans.agree "yeah this one is meh"
if you want to hear much more of their cultural influence you should listen to 'dreaming' i dont think there's an official video for that particular song tho.
I'm floored that the video for this song has over a billion views. I remember picking up this album when it was released and this song was good but didn't really stand out for me....perhaps because I already knew the band from their album prior so it wasn't unique. Interesting you compared them to Jinjer...I can definitely hear the similarities with the blends of styles and melodic breakdowns and then, as a whole, the "non-formulaic" song structures over the course of their discographies. Personally, I like Jinjer more (actually more than any other band beside Metallica) for many reasons but of course because of what Tatiana brings to the table.
the original name of the song was "Suicide," but columbia records made them change it to make it radio friendly.
the title is a bit of a play on words - "Suey-cide."
also: the guitarist Daron Malakian wrote it with lead singer, and he explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"
its a great song with a great message, its timeless.
Daron didn't write all of the song though. I love Daron, but only giving him credit is kind of crap. Serj is responsible for the stuff from the bible.
This explains the disdain on their faces when eating the chop suey. Thanx.
My son overdosed already reminded me of him. Thanks for that info
Daron wrote the music, Serj wrote the lyrics, I believe. Daron wrote several songs on the following albums (usually the worst lyrics in my opinion)
Daron denied the label not liking it bs. They just thought it was a lazy title. “Chop suey” was a wordplay coming from b&w gangster movies about death that fitted perfectly into the song and that’s it.
11:11 - The exact moment he understood, that the build up to these harmonies was genius
System of a down are Americans of Armenian origin so you you have a very good ear for
I was so impressed he clocked that!
This is one of the best reviews of this song - nice work. Toxicity is another great SOAD song.
Most of SOAD is magical let it ride brother!
I think it's impossible to be Armenian and not be polical in so e way
BYOB is my fave, personally
You are the first reactor to notice...Hey, they're eating Chop Suey! Thank you!! ❤
System Of A Down - Toxicity. You must listen that song!
I agree. Toxicity and also Sugar! Maximum the Hormone are often compared to SOAD. Serj Tankien is a genius! Thank you for this! Keep 'em coming!
A Maximum the Hormone song was randomly played by my Spotify the other day and I thought it WAS a SOAD song until the singing. 💀
“Father into your hands I commend my spirit” and “Why have you forsaken me?” were two of the final seven phrases spoken to God by Jesus as he hung upon the Cross.
One of the most beautiful songs ever to be played on radio man just haunting, moving, brilliant!
"The guitar player really creeps me out though."
Somewhere, Darren just smiled but he isn't sure why.
😂
That was really one of the best reviews I've seen for this song!
Their transitions are amazing and his voice is just ugh so beautiful
You'd enjoy BYOB a lot, listen to it and the message. Awesome band.
Dude do more System of a Down! I know you’ll like them. They are heavy!
Beautiful is the perfect word for this song, particularly that last piece
My favorite part is when he sings “why have you forsaken me”
I first heard of this band back in 2000. When I was still in the Air Force with the 4th FS 388th FW at HIll AFB, UT. I was hooked up to their song "Sugar", They were really popular during the time of Papa Roach. I still love to hear SOAD to this day they are very good.
Try System of a down - Question!
It's the most dynamic song I've ever heard.
Toxicity was the album as was number 1 on the billboard charts when 9.11 happened, mainstream music has changed so much.
My god, the years you have missed are the years I love. Hope you enjoy catching up
So much SOAD to check out, great diverse band.
This is one of the greatest reactions…!
Holy crap, love your way of analisys, thats about all I wanna say, thats all there needs to be said ! thx.
An absolute beast of a song.
Welcome to the family brotha!
Thumb up for the "woaw" at the final part of the song. Your emotions when "why have you forsaken me..."
Always remember... 3 months later the world changed after this song came out...
Just by reacting to SOAB deserves my subscription. Greetings from Greenland..
So, two notes about the chorus
SOAD typically does this where they completely pull the rug from under you when they swap from verse to chorus.
The "Eastern Europe - Western Asia" feel comes from them playing on a bouzouki during the chorus, which is mostly played around the area of Greece/Turkey/Armenia.
The song is absolutely flawless.
I would love to see you react to Holy mountain by SOAD when you get a chance. It's an absolutely soul wrenching (When you know the context) and beautiful piece.

the musicians and these different people are in a box Chop Suey
Don't know how I missed this upload! I love SOAD. They were going on a reunion tour before covid happened and released 2 songs last year. A lot of the songs have political or religious messages, and the songs are always great. Serg has one of the best voices in rock.
Evenascence bring me to life
Ah one of my favourites, don't know how I missed you reacting to this but so glad you did! I need to see if I missed you watching serj tankians solo - Empty walls because that's brilliant!

This is what you called Rap Metal!!!!

"Could be Armenian". The entire band is Armenian, so I think you got it.
Cool! Thank you)

If you haven't checked it out, there are two great System of a Down covers by Halocene, Lauren Babic and Violet Orlandi on youtube, one of them is Chop Suey.
The drummer has the determined, confused look of every industrious high school dropout I've ever known.
😂😂

Hey OSN, great reaction, one of my favorite SOAD songs I think you'll like is Aerials.

Not sure if you will get this since this vid is a few months old. on the album version you can hear one of the band members say to another "We're rolling Suicide." right before the guitar intro starts. There's a lot of meat on this bone. Check out "Hypnotize" next.
if you want to hear much more of their cultural influence you should listen to 'dreaming' i dont think there's an official video for that particular song tho.
Waiting for him to finally say "Armenian" when trying to figure out what that guitar part sounds like, lol.
Machine Head is another great Metal band of your lost era. Check out "Imperium"
I'm floored that the video for this song has over a billion views. I remember picking up this album when it was released and this song was good but didn't really stand out for me....perhaps because I already knew the band from their album prior so it wasn't unique.
