    The song is about suicide, and how people will condemn, or mock people who are suicidal as if they are weak, and pathetic. The first verse is basically speaking about an unstable person with an unstable life. Well adjusted people from the outside looking in tend to believe that mentally/emotionally unstable people are exaggerating their issues for the sake of gaining sympathy, or attention, and believe they are a mess because of their own choice. Some people will go as far as to say that a suicidal person deserves to die without even considering the emotional impact of what they are saying about that person in such a vulnerable mental state, especially young people who are very insecure, impressionable, and haven't found themselves yet. This song holds even more validity in the age of the internet, and social media.

      "During an interview, guitarist Daron Malakian explained the meaning of the song: "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.'""

      You forgot to mention why the weird title. The original title, censored by the publishing company, was (caps are mine) "Self-righTEOUS SUIcide". If you pronounce and listed to the capitalized chars, they sound exactly the same as "Chop Suey". And as a polite middle-finger they included a scene eating "chop suey" into the musical video.

    • @alexthemoonsloth
      @alexthemoonsloth 4 месяца назад

      @@franzrogar chop suey, if u "chop" suicide in half, and add the "chop" part, LOL u get "chop suey" and it was censored due to concern over air play with 'suicide" in the title.

    • @franzrogar
      @franzrogar 4 месяца назад

      @@alexthemoonsloth no. The title is because of the pronunciation of the central lyric I talk about, as per SOAD themselves said. Nothing to chop here or there. The company didn't want "Self-righteous Suicide" as the song title and they used "teous sui" (center of it) that sounds exactly the same as "chop suey".

    There are so many layers in the last 40-50 second of the song, with, it's by far one of my favorite parts of any song when the piano and strings kick in. I know quite a few people who didn't even realize the piano and strings were there.
    The piano draws my attention every time, it becomes the focus of the music for me.

    If you get a chance, check out the isolated vocals/instrumentals of this song. There is way more going on than meets the ear, I only discovered this recently myself when a reactor actually had the isolated up. This band is not your typical garage junkies making noise. They are artists. This is one among many possible and likely reasons their music holds up to this day.

    So for the midsection “Father into your hands I commend my spirit” has a pretty crazy backstory: the singer Serj Tankian was having trouble coming up with ideas so he picked a book from the producer’s collection which happened to be the Bible.
    The line was randomly chosen by the singer and it happened to be Jesus’ last words on the cross.

    the song is about suicide and the verse "Father into your hands I commend my spirit" is basically a bible verse "Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.". The next section with "Why have you forsaken me?" and all is in my opinion a cry from a person suffering from depression not seeing their way out asking God why are they all alone. The lyrics are truly sad. The story of thise lyrics is:
    Rick Ruben (producer) says in a podcast that Serj picked a random book out his library to find lyrics for a section of Chop Suey and landed on the phrase:
    Father, into your hands I commend my spirit
    Father, into your hands
    Why have you forsaken me?
    In your eyes forsaken me
    In your thoughts forsaken me
    In your heart forsaken me
    This is from the Crucifixion scene in the Bible. I think it's used in Jesus Christ Superstar as well
