Daron said the song is about how people are unfairly judged when they lose their life because of a drug addiction or because of suicide. "I cry when angels deserve to die" is basically saying it makes him sad when good people die because of their unfortunate circumstances. "grab a brush and put a little makeup, hide the scars to fade away the shakeup, whyd you leave the keys up on the table" essentially saying people put on "makeup" and hide their pain to avoid judgement, and that if your going to commit suicide you wont need your keys to get back in the house. For the bridge they actually randomly opened a bible and put their fingers on a paragraph and it was the "father into your hands I commend my spirit" part. Then they played off of that and related it to the overall theme of the song. Really deep song here by system of a down, but most people dont realize it because of how intense the song is.

The part about “father in to your hands, I commit my spirit” comes from the Bible - Luke 23:46 when Jesus calls out his last words before dying on the cross to God. Interesting tidbit, they were at an impasse with figuring out that part of the song so they went to Rick Rubin’s house - producer of all good things - and he told Serj (lead singer) to grab a book off the shelf and open to a page and read it to come up with his bridge/chorus. He opened to that part of a bible and the rest is history.
I think when it comes to metal stuff you should listen to it twice. Once so Lex can get the metal princess groove outta her system and then the second time so she can try to figure out what’s going on with the meaning. She really needs to go to a rock concert!!!!!

Chop Suey became the name after they censored the original title. I interpret this song as you bringing yourself down through the "I did this for you, so do this for me" attitude.

I've been listening to this song since it came out and I still don't know what lyrics are all about...and to be frank , I don't care about the lyrics whatsoever. What I like about it is the explosive energy of the music, which is enough for simpleton as I am :D

ONE OF THE ONLY REACTION CHANNELS THAT ARENT FAKE AF! You are even straight up when you don't like something. One week half these reactors are drum critics, the next the same reactors are vocal coaches! They haven't heard some of the most major songs from major bands throughout all genres. What do the do in the car since birth, sit in silence? Do they not watch movies and hear some of these songs they react to. Then they're scared to say when they aren't actually a fan of what they react to. No way they like every damn song from multiple genres, unless they just have no real taste and just like everything. You already know word for word what most are going to say. Wtf!? Lost in Vegas, Jamal, trash talkers, Stevie Knight, and "Coach" are about all I listen to anymore until I come across your channel. Much respect for honest opinions and reactions! Tired of droll "Woooooow!" reactions in some reactor's videos.
Brad: "How do you feel about it so far?" Lex: "It's LIT!" I liked that. :) Check out #LonelyDay, it's a beautiful song and my favorite SOD song, also the story of my life... Also, #Spiders is another of my favorites... both these songs are sung w/ clean vocals, melodic, and not all over the place like Chop Suey. Then... if you really want to see / hear 'lit'... go back to the beginning where it all began and feast on some #Sugar!!
An old fav of mine. Thanks for making me smile this am. Lexi you are such a rocker and know how to break these down. Seeing you smiling while banging brings me such joy.. Poor Brad is confused but trying.
Awesome!! One of the songs of the century, and not just in the metal genre (just check the views on RUclips to get some perspective), from one the most talented and unique bands ever! "Random" is a good word to describe a lot of their songs :) Don't dwell much in the meaning cause SOAD are very cryptic and often tell people to interpret as they want (like you did). Try "Toxicity" next! It's a blast! Cheers, fun video!
THIS IS AMAZING! I loved this video. More System of a Down! The lyrics are amazing to dissect and ripe with sociopolitical commentary, the music between the beautiful harmonies and Armenian influence and harder rock/metal - it's just a fucking vibe. Bonus - they have so so many dope songs across their five albums. If you enjoyed the amazing transitions of hard rock and melodic harmonies, you'll like most of their catalogue. This band is a defining artists of the 9/11 generation. The world changed in those years, and SOAD was the soundtrack for many adolescents and young adults in that time. Because of the lyrics of this song actually, it was quite controversial when it was released in getting radio play or not (because of 9/11 and the suicides). Favorite songs I'd suggest: Holy Mountains (very powerful about the Armenian Genocide - check the 2015 live concert in Armenia for the first time in the rain); Aerials (a very popular song); BYOB (popular party song); Toxicity (one of their most famous)
Me and my friends as kids used to watch this song just to laugh and poke fun at the lyrics and video 😂🤣😂 now I’m older this song is so beautifully amazing holds so much passion. ( I’m black British from west Africa, we either stay far away or laugh at this type of music)
I love their reactions. And focusing here on Lex’s reaction, it’s nice to see a reaction where the song wasn’t liked as much. It’s real and it’s ok that’s what hearing new music is all about and that’s what makes music so awesome is when it hits you it just does and when it doesn’t it’s ok it just doesn’t. Give credit for the talent and move to the next. I think there is some pressure from “reactioners” (for a lack of a better term) to give extra praise to a song bc that is what the audience wants and not necessarily how much they really enjoyed what they heard. It can be true that obv people like to hear that the music they like is then liked by someone new to it so it’s easy to want to always give the audience what they want but its just not going to be the case that every song played is going to be thoroughly enjoyed and there is no need to pretend bc that’s what music is all about. You guys give honest takes on the music good job.
Brad is showing musical growth! This is the reason live performances and edited performance videos are so much better than lyric videos. You get a feel for what it might be like at their concert, feeding off the energy of the crowd, and in this case some trippy, artistic video editing in post-production.
Please do some Nine Inch Nails. They have a huge catalog in the large fan base and lots of interesting songs dating all the way back to 1989 to present
All the members of SOAD have stated that their songs are up for interpretation. They don’t want to explain their songs because it would defeat the purpose of what they’re trying to accomplish
System of a Down is a very random band at times, but also very poignant in their social/geopolitical commentary. They have a lot of "nothing" songs like Sugar, but then they have songs like Toxicity and Aerials.
@@yenotich totally fair. "Nothing" wasnt really the right phrase for what I was meaning. "Goofy" maybe? I know it has meaning but the kombucha mushroom people throws it off a bit 😂
People need to understand that on an entry level, especially with non-metal people like they are, you ALWAYS go with the hits first, always. It's what made them famous. Then after 6 or 7 hits you can suggest the obscure ones that we all love but are hard to get in if you are a newcomer.
@@arc6017 Absolutely. I saw many people, recommending the more 'obscure' stuff to reactors first, and they never reacted to that band again. You need to give people a chance to get into the flow. Speaking of SOAD, you always go with Chop Suey, Toxicity, Aerials and BYOB first. If people don't like that, forget about it at all.
@@arc6017 mmmh to me it never sounded that much "obscure" like you said. But maybe it was because i knew them too well at the time it came out. And also it has been a while since i listened to that song and i am just becoming old (i am 38) and forgot how wierd this song is.
Not their best? I'm a huge fan of SOAD and I understand they have amazing songs, and we all have our favorites, but saying this is not their best is a stretch, it's easily one of the songs of this century!
@@arc6017 I completely agree that it was a music changer...like Teen Spirit. It changed the rock genre, everyone wanted to make music like them. IMO, they have songs that are lyrically and musically better, with more dynamic transitions. Hell, BYOB won them a Grammy, and I don't think reactors should touch the song until they've listened to several other SoaD songs first. SoaD is like Tool or RatM, there are several songs that are too advanced for the new listener.
@@mountainbikemayhem1833 I agree with everything! Even the BYOB thing. And I also agree that they have songs that lyrically and musically better. That said, I think as a whole this song is near perfection and in my comment I just wanted to note that saying that this amazing song is not their best is a bit of a stretch. I mean, I can definitely name 3 or 4 SOAD songs that are as good as Chop Suey and in the same exact level, but I don't think there is any song above it. Basically we agree in everything and have a simillar opinion and love on SOAD, just a bit of semantic separate us :)
One of the best parts of SOAD, and in particular Toxicity as an album, is that you don't actually need to really "get" the songs on the first or second pass. SOAD are such effective musicians that the music holds up so well on its own merit, and the lyrics and interpretation of them can be a whole different thing.

I’m amazed of how many super popular songs you haven’t heard of. I kind of envy you guys hearing all these for the first time.
This song will go from confusion.. to the best song you’ve ever heard in a few more listens
I think when it comes to metal stuff you should listen to it twice. Once so Lex can get the metal princess groove outta her system and then the second time so she can try to figure out what’s going on with the meaning. She really needs to go to a rock concert!!!!!
you guys are so genuine i love it. best reactors for sure no pretense no BS just real reaction,,, i'm a fan i'm addicted
This incredible rabbit hole you've discovered should be explored at all costs. Up next - BYOB, Deer Dance, Cigaro. I-E-A-I-A-I-O, Prison Song, Toxicity. Hold on tight. This is a deep hole filled with a bounty of amazing deep cuts. Enjoy!
Aerials, psycho, highway song, prison song, science, sad statue, radio/video, sugar, hypnotize I could keep going lol
Oh, spiders, cant forget spiders
I enjoy watching Lex get into all of this good music for the first time.
For SOAD, you’ve gotta listen to Aerials and Toxicity
and BYOB and Sugar and Lonely day and Soldier side and streamline and prison song and bounce
@@kbhrx fck it, they need to just listen to all their music. So many great songs
@@ext93 true
One of my all time favourite songs, it's just pure perfection.
You have no idea what you’re getting into with band. Put your seatbelts and headgear on. They’re very different and even weird but AMAZING!!!
It's nice to see that Brad isn't looking quite as scared anymore 😁😁😁
System of a Down is in a whole league of their own! So bad ass! Serj’s voice is one of my favorites!
His voice is both brutal and beautiful!
Love watching Lex in the metal reactions. She feeling it. You can see it in her face. She feeling it.❤
"this makes me want chop Suey" ..... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember waiting up til after midnight for the premiere with some bros. When we heard it we all knew they would blow up. That CD was a masterpiece.
I think this is the best by far 'system of the down" done!!
Toxicity and Aerials, among many others, are definitely songs you need to listen by them! One of my favorite bands from any genre 🤙🏻
I love the rock or metal reactions. Keep em coming
I love SOAD , its so good seeing new generations discovering them...
Lex you are so a rocker... love it
Taking me back to my high school days with all this metal 🤘 love it💗
Lex!!! Seeing you get hyped on the songs that used to bring me so much comfort as a teen is so rad!!! I love the reflections / observations you both bring to you analysis
A metal song that Brad likes more than lex ! What is this channel coming too???
😆💀💀💀
To
Right I was shocked that lex was off the vibe 😹
Lex was feelin it too
Word !
I have to say that Lex had been into it all the way and always but for Brad to enjoy it more than Lex did ?
Holyshit !
That was a switch !
Have you saw their last previous reaction with "Demolisher" by Slaughter To Prevail ?
OMG and Brad admit that that was his favorite song !
Yeah my man Brad is now an official a metalhead !
I love seeing videos of diehard Rap fans getting into Rock / Metal. As a huge fan of Rock and Metal !
It would be nice if Rock and Metal would be just as popular as Hip Hop !
I love how Brian is chill when it comes to his rocking out, when I know he wanted to mosh during a majority of this song.
Chop suey is based upon the differences of how people pass and in how they are judged by society.
Took me 10 years to catch on to the vibe of this band in general, but now they're one of my faves!
Chop Suey became the name after they censored the original title. I interpret this song as you bringing yourself down through the "I did this for you, so do this for me" attitude.
It’s Jesus Christ yelling out as a human being on the cross from the mind of.an angry son disgusted with those he’s dying for and not understanding why his father sent him here
The name chop suey came from them changing the name from suicide to then chopping the name in half chop suey
Off the album toxicity, the song deer dance is so deep lyrically. I love it. Sonically and mentally
Deer dance is such a tune
You guys are the best, found yall on tiktok, and have been running thru your videos for the last couple hours hahaha feel like im rediscovering these songs through y’all 👍🏼
Truer words were never said... Everyone loves chop suey. 💚
😆😆💀
The song was supposed to be called SUICIDE - but the record label wouldn’t let them call it that. So they CHOPPED suicide in half… Suici (Suey) - Chop Suey
The history behind this band is pretty awesome as well.
I've been listening to this song since it came out and I still don't know what lyrics are all about...and to be frank , I don't care about the lyrics whatsoever. What I like about it is the explosive energy of the music, which is enough for simpleton as I am :D
apparently the song supossed to call "suicide but their label refused so they call it's chop for cutting their song ands suey for ""sueyside !!!!*** and make fun of them self eating chop suey in the clip.
yes Brad, this is good music, even if you don't get too in depth in the meaning, it will get you to bounce
Going with what Brad was saying about liking the randomness and the switch-ups, I think he'd really enjoy Toxicity.
The most underrated band musically. The drummer is one of my top 5.
Brad: "How do you feel about it so far?"
Lex: "It's LIT!"
I liked that. :)
Check out #LonelyDay, it's a beautiful song and my favorite SOD song, also the story of my life...
Also, #Spiders is another of my favorites... both these songs are sung w/ clean vocals, melodic, and not all over the place like Chop Suey.
Then... if you really want to see / hear 'lit'... go back to the beginning where it all began and feast on some #Sugar!!
This was also the first song I heard by these guys. It took a bit of listening, but they became one one my all-time favourite bands.
Serj gives us a little taste of his Armenian side in his vocal melodies. love them!
"Random" is a good word to describe a lot of their songs :)
Don't dwell much in the meaning cause SOAD are very cryptic and often tell people to interpret as they want (like you did).
Try "Toxicity" next! It's a blast!
Cheers, fun video!
Listen to this around 10 times and you'll then have it on repeat. An absolute masterpiece!
"Everyone loves Chop Suey!" Greatest line of all time to a great song!! Love you guys😊
It was supposed to be an assault on your senses to wake up and realize taking ones life can be caused by external factors? His voice is fire
Me and my friends as kids used to watch this song just to laugh and poke fun at the lyrics and video 😂🤣😂 now I’m older this song is so beautifully amazing holds so much passion. ( I’m black British from west Africa, we either stay far away or laugh at this type of music)
Avenged Sevenfold Buried Alive or NIghtmare. Lex will love those guys.
Nightmare
Afterlife!
Huh. What about a little piece of heaven? Too much?
@@Scoobay For a noob, that is something you have to scale into IMO.
Love this song as well as y’all’s reactions. Check out some more SOD, Toxicity, BYOB, and chic n Stu!
Still my favourite band to this day. Don't what it was about them but I love every track they ever recorded.
More System of A Down
First time checking your SOAD reactions. I'm feeling like you all are gonna love this band.
React to System of a Down - Aerials
Another good one
System of a Down and Deftones seem to be two of the most universally loved harder rock/metal bands. Been a fan of both since the late 90s-early 2000s.
I'd suggest Rage Against The Machine. Killing in the name... Or Bullet In The Head. Real rap metal sound. Love your reactions by the way.
Sugar is not a "nothing' song , I'd argue on that :D It's a song about a drug addiction as a form in which our society lives, driving the members mad
@@yenotich totally fair. "Nothing" wasnt really the right phrase for what I was meaning. "Goofy" maybe? I know it has meaning but the kombucha mushroom people throws it off a bit 😂
Chic N' Stu is probably the most goofy song they have, and it still has some bomb ass social commentary
their "nothing" song, as stated by Serj, is Jet Pilot
One of the best reactions to metal from non-metalheads I’ve seen! Nice job guys!
Not the song I would have suggested first. Do Deer Dance next.
Wut? 😄
yes, i agree
You definitely need to listen to more songs of System of a Down. Their music is not only phenomenal, it has a very positive message
This is their first, but not their best…Toxicity, Prison song, or aerials. Don’t do BYOB yet. You aren’t ready for it.
Holy Mountain, Soldier Side, Hypnotize, Aerials so much SOAD
I think you gave the most honest response to the makeup of this song.
One of the best parts of SOAD, and in particular Toxicity as an album, is that you don't actually need to really "get" the songs on the first or second pass. SOAD are such effective musicians that the music holds up so well on its own merit, and the lyrics and interpretation of them can be a whole different thing.
