It would be so fun to watch a series where you read one or two anthologies with a lot of authors you haven't read from and then picking your top 3 favorites and top 3 least favorites and doing follow up videos where you read an actual novel from each of those authors. Could be a fun way to read new authors and figure out if an authors short stories are always indicative of their writing. :)
I seriously love this series so much I cannot even tell you. Also just ordered Dreadful Young Ladies- so many of these short story collections sound so good!!!!!
Friday Black is phenomenal! I think you'd really like it. It's a great horror collection with a few stories focusing on racism. I haven't stopped thinking about some of the stories since I read it.
florida and friday black are great collections! florida is very much a collection of stories that feature florida as a setting in a really visceral way or as an important detail, Lauren groff's writing is phenomenal. friday black is a lot of speculative fiction that interrogates race and capitalism in a smart way. I really enjoyed them both. I need to read a house is a body and get in trouble soon too!!
oooh I'm actually reading Florida by Lauren Groff right now and the writing style is very rich and descriptive, really beautiful. I'd say most of the stories so far have been about families, like women's relationships with motherhood and children's relationships with their parents, but also the Florida setting plays a super big role. definitely recommend!
Loosed Upon the World and Echoes sound the most interesting. Probably going to write all these titles down anyway. I think I might love short story collections. I loved Chicken Soup story collections growing up, so if we can shift to collections with better authors, it might be a win for me.
Fresh Ink is pretty good and I think you'll enjoy it. The stories move fast hence the length. I've read and taught A Long Way Gone. It's incredibly captivating, moving, and will stick to your soul. Thanks for sharing!
I know you're probably not looking for more anthology recommendations, but I've read two really good ones lately that you might like. One is What Darkness Fears and the other is Fool's Honor...both are edited by Anne J. Hill. What Darkness Fears is all dark spooky stories with a little bit of light and Fool's Honor is a fun anthology that spans all genres and it's all about stories with big twists. I definitely liked Fool's Honor more, just because darker stories aren't always my favourite, but both anthologies were really strong. (Plus Fool's Honor is STUNNING)
I just stumbled across "Great or Nothing" on Goodreads and since your raving about Little Women I wondered if it was on your radar. It's more of a collaboration since it has 4 authors each writing the perspective of one of the sisters, but it sounds potentially up your alley I adore every video you post and I hope you're feeling better since the 3rd Times the Charm video!
I read Kelly Link's Get in Trouble and the lack of synopsis really annoyed me at the time. From what I remember it's mainly light sci-fi with a psychological horror focus. There was a lot of cross-genre play which sometimes worked and sometimes I felt was too much. They're generally literary stories that occur with strange worlds (with androids, superheroes, spaceships) set as unexplored backdrop.
I weirdly think that you would enjoy my English classes. A lot of the readings that we do are short story focused since the semester is so short. We have read a lot of Edgar Allan Poe and a few Toni Morrison (who has become one of my favorites)
One short story collection I can recommend is The Decameron Project by The New York Times. Inspired by Boccaccio’s The Decameron, which was a short story collection from when the Black Death was taking place in Florence, The New York Times gathered authors such as Margaret Atwood and Tommy Orange to participate in writing their own short stories during the COVID pandemic. I think you would really enjoy this one 😊💕📚
I just read Land of Big Numbers and it's my favorite short story collection I've ever read. They're all a bit off-beat and there are some super interesting themes and ideas. Highly recommend checking it out!
Friday Black is really awesome, I hope you eventually get to it. I really like short story collections, but I always prefer collections by only one author instead of many. Not sure why, maybe I just need some consistency between the stories, at least in the writing style.
a few years ago for a Global Lit class we read A Long Way Gone and I really enjoyed it, especially because of the discussions we had as a class following supplemental reading my professor provided after we finished it. I don't remember the exact texts she gave us, but I think it's worth looking into a bit after you finish reading it (or before; I think for the sake of the discussions she was pushing us to have she wanted us to go without those beforehand)
I love Kelly Barnhill but know ahead of time that her adult short story collection is really more "a novella and some short stories" collection. I enjoyed the Kelly Link short story collection. I don't think I've read any of those others, but I did see one curated by Ellen Datlow - I pretty much grab any collection she's involved in.
You MUST read Out There by Kate Folk! Speculative short story collection by one author, debut in 2022 and it was so amazing and weird. I know you'd absolutely LOVE IT
omg my 9th grade english class read a long way gone!! it's been like 10 years since then lol but i remember actually really finding it interesting and i do recommend
I think it would probably be safe to unhaul Fresh Ink, you're right in the length of the stories being too short. Some excellent authors, but nothing you're missing! My favorite story was the one from Walter Dean Myers...I think it's called Tags? Maybe worth reading that one! It's in like a script/play format so shouldn't take much time 😂
I have such extreme fondness for short stories because I always consider them like snacking on a box of bite sized chocolates 😍 so much satisfaction in sampling and finishing so many stories in a brief time. It would be super thrilling to watch you do a vlog reading a couple of short story books and then selecting the top 5 best stories for you. 🤩
Oh I had Echos on my radar but definitely adding the other two horror ones to my tbr. I'm currently reading Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin which are horror short stories and honestly it makes me feel dumb lol the cover is gorgeous though
Some of these sound really interesting! I haven't seen the others in this series so maybe you already said - but do these include the books in your closet? 😅
I'm enjoying these very much. I also have "A House is a Body" and "Flight or Fright" (you didn't really mean that you had never heard of Ray Bradbury, did you?) and haven't gotten around to reading them as well
I read "The Truth About Stories" by Thomas King last year and really enjoyed it. I'd be interested to pick up his other writings. Dreadful young ladies and Eat the sky drink the ocean have been on my shelves for a while, I need to get to them.
I don't think I'm a short story person, I always feel unsatisfied when they end just when I'm getting into it, I did read The Office of Historical Corrections earlier this year and it was pretty good
I picked up " Natures Warning" classic stories of Eco-Science Fiction from the library! I haven't started it yet, but i would love to hear your thoughts🌟
it would be such an aspirational task but it would amazing to read a short story every day of the year/a few months; i would never have the discipline for that lol
I highly rec It's A Whole Spiel, it's one of my fave short story collections of all time and really covers the full spectrum of the Jewish experience, my only critique is that as a Sephardi Jew I do wish it featured less Ashkenazim
Seems to me you could have a video/vlog series where you read books that you're primarily interested in just because of the covers. Then you can see how often your taste in covers lines up with your taste in books. I'd love to watch such a video because I also love pretty covers and are too often swayed by them. Well, what's a book-lover to do? Use it to make content I guess. :)
I don't generally go for anthologies right at release. Although, I've become a big fan of Ellen Datlow's horror anthologies, and I've been much quicker to pick them up.
Jeff and Ann Vandeermeer have amazing scifi anthologies. If youre a fan of time travel: The Time Travelers Almanac. There are so many awesome stories. Choc full of time travel of all types.
I think Friday Black just might challenge your “not as impactful as a novel” view, especially with the opening story. It’s arresting and confronting and discomfiting.
If anyone wants another rec the collection of stories in the “growing up - in Australia” (Asian/African/disabled/queer/aboriginal/Muslim) series are great!
Yay I’ve never been this early! So I will take the opportunity to recommend you a book I think you’ll love, it’s called North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud it’s a weird horror anthology that I feel it’s very your vibe
I think you usually used to read anthologies during readathons, throughout the entire week but since you’ve been participating in less and less readathons maybe that’s why they’ve been piling up
I've read The Purple Swamp Hen and Other Stories and it was forgettable and kinda boring. :/ So I don' think you need to rush to read that one (unless you wanna do a 'reading books with birds on the cover' vlog lol)

That is such a good idea
I love this idea!!
I love your wine analogy!
I seriously love this series so much I cannot even tell you. Also just ordered Dreadful Young Ladies- so many of these short story collections sound so good!!!!!
this would be TOO chaotic but what if you read ONE story from ALL of the short story collections in a vlog. WHAT IF??
You’re my go to person for anthology recs 😝 I feel like not enough content creators read them and talk about them!!
I loved If I Had Two Wings by the late, great Randall Kenan!
Friday black is one of my favorites!
A Long Way Gone was really good. It was one of our summer reads when I taught at a middle school. Powerful.
Friday Black is phenomenal! I think you'd really like it. It's a great horror collection with a few stories focusing on racism. I haven't stopped thinking about some of the stories since I read it.
Our tastes in reading differ yet I still love your videos ❤️
florida and friday black are great collections! florida is very much a collection of stories that feature florida as a setting in a really visceral way or as an important detail, Lauren groff's writing is phenomenal. friday black is a lot of speculative fiction that interrogates race and capitalism in a smart way. I would love a video of all the anthology books you’ve read! I also love reading short stories and anthologies but I find it hard to find them.
I have read Florida and thought it was really interesting. Each of the stories is so different. I think they are very much about the atmosphere!
After Sundown was an absolutely fantastic horror anthology, it has some of my favourite short stories I've read so far in it
I have been absolutely loving reading short stories lately! Looking for more sci-fi and horror ones
My favourite anthology is When Things Get Dark edited by Ellen Datlow, it's a must read for fans of Shirley Jackson
I really liked this video, I'm glad RUclips recommended you.
We have always been here and Call me Indian are so so good!!! I read them both this year for buzzwordathon and I think you’d like them a lot!
Loosed Upon the World and Echoes sound the most interesting. Probably going to write all these titles down anyway.
I think I might love short story collections.
I loved Chicken Soup story collections growing up, so if we can shift to collections with better authors, it might be a win for me.
I loved Ray Bradbury's novella The Halloween Tree.
If you haven’t read Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s Sabrina & Corina, you def should! Amazing short story collection!
Fresh Ink is pretty good and I think you'll enjoy it. The stories move fast hence the length. I've read and taught A Long Way Gone. It's incredibly captivating, moving, and will stick to your soul. Thanks for sharing!
This is so perfect I've been so into short story anthologies lately! It's like you read my mind. Thanks for the video!

Call me Indian was one of my favourite books from last year. I highly recommend the audiobook.

I looooove short story collections so this video is giving me so many ideas 💕 can’t wait to see which ones you love!
Those horror anthologies look so interesting! 👀
I weirdly think that you would enjoy my English classes. A lot of the readings that we do are short story focused since the semester is so short. We have read a lot of Edgar Allan Poe and a few Toni Morrison (who has become one of my favorites)
I'm currently halfway through The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu and loving it. Sci-fi short stories good for people who like Ted Chiang.
Would be so excited to see you read the adult High Fantasy collections
One short story collection I can recommend is The Decameron Project by The New York Times. Inspired by Boccaccio’s The Decameron, which was a short story collection from when the Black Death was taking place in Florence, The New York Times gathered authors such as Margaret Atwood and Tommy Orange to participate in writing their own short stories during the COVID pandemic. I just read Land of Big Numbers and it's my favorite short story collection I've ever read. They're all a bit off-beat and there are some super interesting themes and ideas. Highly recommend checking it out!
I don’t read much of any of these types of books, so I am excited to try a couple that you mentioned!
+TBR also.....we are catching up on our bookish comments and videos today :~)
Friday Black is really awesome, I hope you eventually get to it. I really like short story collections, but I always prefer collections by only one author instead of many. Not sure why, maybe I just need some consistency between the stories, at least in the writing style.

The wine quote was from Ariel and I loved it! It’s my new book motto (and excuse for buying more books 😂)!
This is the first time I’ve ever seen those TBR shelves empty, it’s so strange 😂
So here for this 🙌🏼
I think you're going to love Fresh Ink!
I just read Loosed Upon the World recently! Pretty long for an anthology but there were some great standouts
ooh! In The Meantime by Paul Tremblay sounds really interesting!
I don’t even read short stories, am I gonna watch this whole thing and enjoy it? Yup.
Oh I had Echos on my radar but definitely adding the other two horror ones to my tbr. I'm currently reading Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin which are horror short stories and honestly it makes me feel dumb lol the cover is gorgeous though
I've read "A Long Way Gone'. It is excellent and heartbreaking.
Some of these sound really interesting! I haven't seen the others in this series so maybe you already said - but do these include the books in your closet? 😅
The excitement of being early… and the fear for my wallet …
At the end of this series i would love to know the total number of the unread books on your tbh total including all genres the lot!
Wow I'm so early!!! And I was really looking forward to this, so thank you!
I'm enjoying these very much. I also have "A House is a Body" and "Flight or Fright" (you didn't really mean that you had never heard of Ray Bradbury, did you?) and haven't gotten around to reading them as well
Great video!

I think you would love “Through the Woods” by Emily Carroll
I don't think I'm a short story person, I always feel unsatisfied when they end just when I'm getting into it, I did read The Office of Historical Corrections earlier this year and it was pretty good
Beautiful 😍
I picked up " Natures Warning" classic stories of Eco-Science Fiction from the library! I haven't started it yet, but i would love to hear your thoughts🌟
I don't have anything intelligent to add, just want to leave a comment to say I am loving this series and reading the comment section.
it would be such an aspirational task but it would amazing to read a short story every day of the year/a few months; i would never have the discipline for that lol
I highly rec It's A Whole Spiel, it's one of my fave short story collections of all time and really covers the full spectrum of the Jewish experience, my only critique is that as a Sephardi Jew I do wish it featured less Ashkenazim
I think you might enjoy Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu. Some creepy, some weird. Pretty good.

Friday black is spectacular. Hope you get to it soon!
Ive got several very large collections but they're so intimidating that I never get there.
Jeff and Ann Vandeermeer have amazing scifi anthologies. If youre a fan of time travel: The Time Travelers Almanac. There are so many awesome stories. Choc full of time travel of all types.
Super 💕🙏
I recently read a short story by NK Jemison called Emergency Skin that was incredible! Highly recommend!
Have you read the Broken Earth trilogy? It's one of the best and most unique fantasy series I've ever read
@@idek7438 I have not. I bought The City We Became after reading that short story but I haven’t gotten to it yet.
Good luck with your reading your books 📚 please stay safe and enjoy your reading love you and your amazing channel xxxx
love your interest in Syria!
💕💕💕
When you read “A Long Way Gone” be prepared with a box of tissues
That being said I HIGHLY recommend it
I think Friday Black just might challenge your “not as impactful as a novel” view, especially with the opening story. It’s arresting and confronting and discomfiting.
In the mean time sounds so fun 👀 we love horror
Dude. I just finished a book that I think you might like. It’s called ‘the lighthouse witches’. The audio book is good too!
If anyone wants another rec the collection of stories in the “growing up - in Australia” (Asian/African/disabled/queer/aboriginal/Muslim) series are great!
Someone tell me why I'm adding all of these straight to my tbr when you've not even read/reviewed them!!!!
I just read Fresh Ink last week. It was ok. Two of the stories I really enjoyed, the others were just meh.
❤️📚
🙂🙂🙂
👍🏻😊
💛💛💛💛
I didn't like Get in Trouble but that's because it was too weird for me, which means you would probably like it.
Yay I’ve never been this early! So I will take the opportunity to recommend you a book I think you’ll love, it’s called North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud it’s a weird horror anthology that I feel it’s very your vibe
What is your lipstick? It’s stunning!
I can vouch for It's a Whole Spiel, there's a real lack of Jewish YA.
The sequel to out now, titled out there is coming out in June.
I think you usually used to read anthologies during readathons, throughout the entire week but since you’ve been participating in less and less readathons maybe that’s why they’ve been piling up
very interesting
I've read The Purple Swamp Hen and Other Stories and it was forgettable and kinda boring. :/ So I don' think you need to rush to read that one (unless you wanna do a 'reading books with birds on the cover' vlog lol)
I highly recommend call me Indian
