    Honestly those people that are complaining can kick rocks. You not liking books you thought you would or you finishing a book you didn't enjoy always makes me feel so validated. I constantly put down or lose interest in books I thought I'd love, it's so normal. I feel like as we get older we just like more and more specific stuff - that doesn't mean I'm never going to pick up a romance again, or a YA contemporary. If they sound interesting, I'll try them. If I don't like them, oh well. That sounds like toxic positivity to me. Lol ppl expecting you to have so many 5 star reads is just unrealistic. Please keep giving us all kinds of reading content, Kayla, bc we just like to hear you talk. 😌

    • @darcy501
      @darcy501 2 года назад +19

      I think you hit the nail in the head with the toxic positivity thing, personally I enjoy all sorts of opinions because when I'm watching a booktuber I'm watching it for their personality and/or taste in books, that absolutely includes the negative opinion on something. Otherwise is like trying to force someone to be what I want them to be instead of letting them be themselves. There's a lot to be learned from the whole spectrum of opinions about a book, and I think that denying or suppressing the negative opinion is denying and suppressing what makes us human.
      You can't expect to like everything you read, but you can hope. And I think nobody spends hours reading a book hoping to hate it. But if you hate it, I wanna know why, maybe it has a trope that you dislike but it's my favorite, but now I'll never know because you decided to voice only positive opinions (?!)
      I wish people stopped trying to force youtubers to conform to the image they have in their heads, that's not only impossible but also cruel.

    • @ChemicalPenguinn
      @ChemicalPenguinn 2 года назад +6

      Exactly - people aren't going to like every book they read, especially if they read a lot of books a year, and that's totally normal. I actually find it beneficial to hear a wide range of opinions on a book so I know based on the content of it whether or not to pick it up. Specific tropes/content can often be glossed over in a positive review of something, because the person is blown away by how good the book is.

    It's totally fine for people to want more positivity, but I just want to say that I always really appreciate the wide range of things you read, and the negative thoughts as well as the positive ones. No book is completely perfect, so it's great to know if something that was only a little negative for you might have a bigger impact for us etc. 💙
    I love the chaos of this idea though 😂 I often pick up something I think I'll like and then start and think, "I'm....not actually sure why I thought I'd like this but it's awesome/not for me"

    If a creator/reviewer decides that they only want to feature or review books they’ve enjoyed, then all the power to them and I’m here for it. But I am starting to get a bit frustrated with this push for constant positivity in the online book space. There is so much value in hearing/reading about things that do not work for a reader. Critique is so important, even for something that you love. I know you’ve talked about in the past how some commenters think you are intentionally picking up books you won’t like, but again there is a lot of value in picking up something that isn’t your usual cup of tea - 1) you never know, this might end up being the book for you, 2) you can learn more about your reading tastes, and 3) sometimes it is just fun to hate read something lmao. All that to say, do you Kayla!

    • @Kenziebeatty
      @Kenziebeatty 2 года назад +6

      Yes to all of this! I always found it so weird that people are okay hate watching tv shows or movies, but get up in arms when people do that with books!? I personally have never DNF’d a book because I want to give an author a full chance. So many times readers will like the beginning of a book and not the ending, so why couldn’t it be the opposite?

  • @filmblooms

    Maybe it's me but I'm the type of reader that doesn't always want a "safe" choice when it comes to book. Excited to watch, but before I get too far in, I do not think that you have negative videos. You are honest. You have candor. You like many many things that you read. A 3 star is like/good/okay, and you give a good amount of those. If everything is a 5 star than nothing is stand out. I expect the majority of what I read to be 3 star area, especially because I read broadly.

  • @kristina_rr

    TBH I don‘t trust booktuber’s who only give out 4 and 5 stars (and never dnf).
    Sure, most of the books I read are 3,5 - 4,5 stars but that‘s because I dnf everything that feels like a 2,5 stars or lower….
    Also negative reviews are often more helpful. I love your honesty and your negative reviews, especially since our reading tastes are quite different. ♥️

This is a fun format but i honestly wished you'd tell your opinion on why you didn't like it, it felt like it was missing. Your reviews also help me know what books i want to read or don't, sometimes even if u don't like, i give it a chance if i feel it's something I'd enjoy, cuz people are different!!! your negative reviews in some parts are not an issue and you don't have only negative opinions. ( also some books deserved a good roast 🤭

    haven't finished the video yet but you're way too kind and understanding so i will say this for you: people need to stop blaming you for not having a vlog with only five stars. like it's not like you have control over that??? and you're mostly picking from your tbr so it bothers me that people have a problem with you sometimes not liking what you're reading, like it does not make sense to me. so i beg you to please not feel bad or insecure when you don't like a lot of books because that is literally completely out of your control. personally i like hearing different energies towards different books it keeps the vlog more interesting (also it's okay if you have two clips back to back in the same place, we just love to see your face!!) but even if i didn't, it's still not on you if you like the books or not.
    i know this seems like a rant like i'm annoyed, but i'm not!! i'm just an empath and i want you to know that your vlogs are great and it's okay to not like the books within them

I can't stand booktubers that hype up objectively terrible books for the sole purpose of uploading content, or creating the illusion that they blow sunshine out their back ends and to avoid offending anyone who likes said book (differing opinions is what makes the world go around, how boring would life be if we all liked and agreed on the same things) 💖

    Talking about books in a constructive/critical way is not being negative necessarily. I never got a negative vibe from you tbh.
    I’ll say that personally I do like watching negative content when I waste my time reading something I didn’t like lol, makes the experience funny instead of frustrating. I even watched Cindy's rant about ACOTAR laughing my ass off even though I do like that series.
    I want to gush about books regardless of how much I liked or disliked them. Positive only content is ok and all (and this vlog is great), but nothing is perfect and I think it’s important to consume review content that is truthful to all types of opinions. Nothing we read is going to be flawless and that’s not the point of it anyway.
    Btw, people thinking 3-4 stars reviews are bad is a bit concerning.

    You are probably one of the BookTubers I have the least amount of books in common with. And you know what? You’re absolutely one of my favorite to watch. I love how you find new ways to choose your TBRs. I love how you describe your thinking with it. I love that you push your own boundaries. I love that you embrace your reading quirks and that you call out your own conflicts of thought. I love your objectivity. You’re willingness to look at your own opinion and the book itself in as many angles as possible. You come across as so authentic in your experience, opinions, hopes and insecurities. And let me tell you. I CRAVE authenticity in my life. We are whole people. None of us are all one thing. And to deny the things we don’t connect to is to deny a part of ourselves. We learn as much from our so called “negative” experiences as we do from our “positive” ones. Keep being your amazing self! Keep embracing all of who you are! 💕 Also. Way to take what your recent experience has been with comments and turn it into a video idea! Love it. 😂🙌🏻

    Hi Kayla! I am not that far into your vlog but I gotta say I love your honesty. I don't love content that is "all positive" or "all negative"! You never roast a book in a way that feels click-baity or disingeunous and the way that you talk about books means you love them so much and that's what I love to see. Loving books means understanding what we gravitate towards and what we don't and that just because we don't like a thing, doesn't mean someone else won't enjoy it for other reasons.

    Watching content creators being critical about books helped me tremendously these past 2 years when I got back into reading after uni. I had a feeling that I was consuming books but didnt really know how to think about them, if that makes sense, then I thought about all those little things that my favorite booktubers were highlighting like the pace, if the plot made sense, how the characters interacted, etc to have something more to say then « I didnt completely like it » and move on. In fact yesterday I finished my first book that I annotated ! And it was so fun :) I know why it didnt fully resonate with me but I also can tell you the strenghts of the book and what I learned about myself as a reader. Without « negative » reviews how are we supposed to start being critical if we don’t know where to start, if we’re not in school anymore ? To me they are really useful

    on a side note - I'm someone who cannot really watch "hate readers" - people who rant review about books. this is for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I watch booktube to get new recs and relax. I have never stopped watching one of your videos because of your negative feelings towards a book. I really value ANY of your thoughts about books, because then I know which ones to not pick up or go in with the idea that certain parts of the books I might not like. if you're seeing an uptick in negative comments about this, I would assume they are newer viewers, but at the end of the day, you can't please everyone anyway. but judging by the comments, a majority of people are pleased!! keep doing you girl!

    Feels like those comments about "only read books you'll like" are just haters? I think you do a great job choosing things you *think* you'll and then explaining why (if) they didn't work for you. It gives a great reference point for the book itself tbh. I also love the energy of just stopping when ur not totally vibing w something though, it's why i tend to read a buncha books at once, so I can rotate.

    Honestly, I watch your videos because you read things that I’ve never seen before. I love that you talk openly about what you like and dislike. I appreciate the openness. Asking someone to love everything they experience is unrealistic. I watch your videos for the journey-not the destination. 💜 Have a good rest of your week.

    Listen, I’m here for whatever you decide to post and I’m glad that you wanted to try reading only books you think you’re going to enjoy (at least for this vlog) but I gotta say that one of my favourite things about your content is that you do pick up such diverse books and give honest reviews, and are okay with reading books you don’t like. It’s always interesting to watch and I try to follow your lead and broaden my horizons when it comes to the books I read and genres I like. And I’ve actually read a handful of books that I’ve enjoyed that I never would have picked up if it wasn’t for watching your vids.

    I love this concept only cause it proves a point. Positivity only when critiquing art - which books are - is not fruitful and limits discussion. Keep telling it like it is, Kayla!

    I always appreciate hearing the little things you wish had been different even in the 4/5 star books. I was wondering if you read any self-published or indie books, I'd love to see a vlog where you find indie books in your favourite genres.

    I know plenty of people have said this already, but sharing negative reviews is not a bad thing at all!! Apart from you just sharing your honest thoughts - which is what I think most people want from reviewers - I also don't think it "ruins" a book for people; on the contrary. There have been plenty of books that you didn't like, but I ended up checking out because of your review, simply because I know there are certain things you don't like in books but I generally really enjoy, whether that's tropes or themes, etc., And the fact that you pointed those things out helped me find books that I enjoyed.

    Kayla, it's impossible to know what you're going to like. Sometimes what we think we would like the most we end up liking the least and vice versa. In the end, it comes down to execution. You can't know in advance if the book is well done or if it will fit your vibes. Don't worry, ignore those people.

    I'm so sorry to hear that people feel like you pick books you don't like... I love rant reviews so I defo love those bad book vlogs but I think that with the amount of books you read each year, including new releases, it's really hard to love all of them!
    Once I've started reading 15+ books/month, I've realised that I was way more critical and enjoyed less books than if I read only 5 books/month. But it kinda makes sense to have a larger spread of ratings when there are more books!

    One of the reasons you are one of the very few booktubers I watch consistently is because you give both positive and negative reviews. Our reading tastes only have a very small overlap, so your negative reviews are very important to me, since what is negative to you might be positive for me. All this to say, please don't feel insecure about your videos cuz they are great.

    Another reason Bitter might be cheaper is that more copies are printed of that book, because Akwaeke Emezi is a popular author with more demand - and more copies means lower production cost per book and therefore a cheaper retail price.
