I’ve owned and operated my Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k Pro for about 3 years now and love it. This is a camera that you purchase when you understand the type of work you want to do. It’s not built to be a run and gun camera. It’s also not a great low light camera. Who is this camera for? For people that are professionally lighting their scenes and doing proper pre-production AS THEY WOULD IF THEY WERE ALEXA OWNERS. The BRAW codec is great in post. If you invest in color grading education, this camera will give you Alexa quality imagery. If you are shooting a low light scene, GO DOWN ON ISO NOT UP. Highest I’d go is 400. You’ll get super clean blacks. For low light scenes, go to ISO 400 and light from there.
100% agree with all you say. It makes you leave behind the dslr style of shooting and slow your process down. Although I have run 'n gunned a couple of documentaries and it's just about workable! For the price a G1 is these days it's exceptional.
@AaronBrown-rr6yu In my experience, this was true in their early days (as it was with RED) But they have improved SIGNIFICANTLY in the past few years. The Pocket 4k, Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k G1 and G2, Pocket 6k and Ursa 12k have been pretty solid from what I have been hearing. You're not going to get Arri QC from Blackmagic but for the price, it's pretty damn good.
I bought a G2 from a friend for 4000 in euro's with a bunch of assescoires like a c fast card, a v mount battery and the shoulder kit. Best purchase of my life.
Hey there - do a test in a near dark situation and set the ISO to 400 or 200 for a low DR shot. You'll find the image is surprisingly clean when pushed. If you do lowlight with ISO 800 there's no room to push the shadows and it's noisy.
Been using the G1 since about a week after they announced it (March of 2017). It's a great camera. We've put it through brutal conditions and it just keeps making beautiful images. You'll love it.
@@GRTHK I think once you give Q5 a try, you'll be hooked. The indicator that shows the remaining minutes of record time will fluctuate as the complexity of the shot changes - just keep that in mind. The reason for this is because Q5 is constant quality, so it doesn't need to use as much data for a static shot as it would for say an action shot that is handheld. You'll end up swapping the cards as it gets close to full as you normally would. Nice that the Ursa has multiple card slots.
@@jannisnewiadomsky I have had the camera in cold conditions - I was the one that was getting too cold. The camera continued to perform even with extreme cold and fine dirt in the air (at a dirt racetrack on a VERY cold night in Michigan).
I just love the image that comes out of the camera. Thought about getting one as well, but decided to get the bmpcc6k, as it dropped in price and I mainly needed another camera for gimbal work. Anyway, love your videos man! Small advice: Lower the volume of the music to -30db in the talking head segments. It's a little bit easier to focus on what you're talking about.
Hey man. I'm gearing up to shoot and pitch a sizzle for a reality show and hopefully take it to pilot. I am considering swapping out my bmpcc4k for the 4.6k G1 so I can have a more ENG approach to managing the shoot (if it were to take, I would probably upgrade to the G2). I think we are both BMD fans--so maybe you understand my desire to "keep it in the family," so have you had a chance to compare this to the BMPCC4k? Not just IQ but overall workflow? Thanks! Thanks man. I haven't used the Pocket4k but I was strongly considering the 6k before going for the Ursa. The Braw image out of 4k / 6k / Ursa are all really close it seems. If you watch Matteo Bertoli's channel he's one of the best resources for the Pocket cameras. Plus points of the Ursa are internal raw recording on cfast, on-board xlr inputs and that 4.6k s35 sensor. Downside is with a v-mount it's a bit heavy! Keep flying the BMCC 2.5k flag man, great work!

Do you think it's still worth getting? found one knocking about for £1.5K with literally every accessory, shoulder mount, sidehandle, evf, even the cfast-ssd vlock plate adapter. Very Tempted, even though I don't need it... (but would be a nice test camera to have before I eventually upgrade to 12K mini pro or the Cine variant someday) I have the pockets (4k+6k) and C200 already, but that extra dynamic range and a pickup and go blackmagic camera that needs no rigging would be nice.

Very nice shots with the piano and the artist singing! I have the G2 and I struggle to get my images to look even remotely like that what do you use to grade it, a lut or all manual.
All the time thinking "pitty ribbon mic in the singer..." That moment you run into your studio and get the ribbon mic for the feel... Anyway, are you still happy with the 4,6k I dot documentary. Already own pocket 4k and S5 lumix. My day to day youtube will be the 4,6k, and the documentary both blackmagics, gimbal work, and adventure the S5(I got the underwater protection also) I found a deal for a German guy for 1k, thinking a lot about try or just buy and sell in spain(much value for the selling about 1,5k) if I'm not happy.
Yes 100% still love the Ursa. The image is beautiful. That's all I really care about. If I had the money I'd get a G2 or a 12K, but the G1 is amazing value now it's not the flagship Blackmagic camera.

As I want to do documentary work next year, I got my 4k+s5 for run and gun, and the Ursa for indoor shooting(twice per week) and the documentary two cameras, as I paired my S5 with the pocket, but not so happy with it. Also to have some native Ef mount, no more speed boosters. My target was 6kpro, but it raised the price in 2 years, and for 3k camera, is a Power/pocket nothing else to add into value. Maybe I'm wrong. The media recording is my main concern, but buy 1 cfast won't kill me if I bought something decent for 1k
@@NaliamCantero Braw isn't that big, depending on what compression ratio you use. 8:1 ratio is still a really nice image. You get about 74min on a 256gb card. 5:1 is 46min etc.... Compared to the Pocket 6K there's both good and bad points. Depends how you're using the camera. You can get the basic Ursa 4K or standard 4.6K but no ND filters, no high frame rate (?), no Braw (?) BUT less than half the price of a 6K on eBay...

Hey Gareth, I would like to know if the metabones speedbooster you use with the bmcc is actually the 0.64x mft one that can be used on lumix's cameras as your gh5s. Or do you have the original bmcc metabones speedbooster?

@@SoloNieves I've never used the CX350 so couldn't compare. I would be very surprised if it makes a nicer image than the Ursa. But maybe the CX350 has other plus points such as longer battery life, less weight etc... Depends what your priorities are. Good luck!

I use the Atomos Ninja V with the Atomos AtomX SDI module adapter. There are monitors out there with built-in SDI ports too, probably close to the same price as a Ninja V + SDI adapter (Atomos Shinobi)

I'd say that is why I like the blackmagic stuff is because it has that budget Alexa quality to it. Obviously doesn't have the DR the Alexa has, but they do so good for the money.

Also a fan of ProGrade Digital cards. Give the Q5 Blackmagic Raw setting a try - that's pretty much all we use now.

Have you had the camera in colder conditions ? I heard the touchscreen doesn't work. Is that right ?

Looks really nice. G1 vs g2 isn't that much of a difference but mainly the framerates. Best thing is that they have the same sensor

My only rule is max ISO 800. Gets a bit noisy above that. Otherwise, this camera is very capable of producing amazing images.

How are you shooting BRAW with the G1? I thought that was only available in the G2 model?
Braw was part of the last few firmware updates a few years ago.

That's a weird glitch you got with the Komputer bay cards. I have 2 Komputer bay cards and use them all the time with my G1, haven't had any problems!
