I just finished replacing the starter on my E60 523iA LCI with the N52b25AE engine.
The starter died suddenly without any warning or symptoms. And Scan tool was showing error code: A0B4 (CAS: Starter Operation.)
If I try starting several times the EGS error pops up too (Defective signal from CAS). All you can hear is the fuel pump turning and a buzz noise. The engine was not cranking at all.
My heart was bleeding low and high because I thought some circuit in the CAS died. Hopefully for me the car got immobilized in a parking lot at my work place.
Called a mechanic to help me.
I was able to get an original starter from the junkyard for 130 bucks.
We tested 12v supply when cranking, and it was okay, we came out to the conclusion that it is a dead starter.
After replacing the starter, the engine started flawlessly.
After inspecting the dead starter I found out it was swapped on the past by some evil mechanic who stole the original part and put a tired one (Full of scratches and and serial number indicates 2005). I was really surprised to see a starter die at 140K kms.
Needless to say that the fuel pump, steering pump, thermostat and water pump are also suspect now....
I came to this video to see how I can rebuild that old part.
I guess those are the contact points?

My n52 e60 just died at 80000km. This car gets alot of short trips. Typical A0B4 engine starter error code and just died suddenly. Took apart and brushes right down. Had another e60 that died at 140k km but was bad from around 100k. It would always take the clock time out from alot of current draw that resolved with the new starter.

Sound vs the voice was pretty terrible, just checked few spots because the clip was annoying to listen, just for that you know.

1004336506 Bosch brush holder. Paint thinner works well to clean it up the gunk .

Did you hear any noise when you tried to start it? Or was it just fuel pumps

    • @BIMMERHEAD
