I'd like to thank you for this video. I am a farmer and on Saturday at 3pm my tractor wouldn't start. The starter smoked a bit on its last try and I assumed it was dead. I watched your video then took my starter apart. I had nothing to lose since the tractor store was closed 'till Monday. It was extremely dirty with oily, greasy dirt. I cleaned it well and reassembled it. After that, I bench tested it (another YT video) and it worked! Today it has been working much better than before and I've transplanted cauliflower, zucchini and summer squash. I'd be down for days sourcing a new starter without this video. It feels good to solve a problem and keep trucking. Thanks man!
Thanks for the help. I just cleaned my 2006 Subaru Outback Wagons starter today. It's been giving me problems for the past month. I was about to buy a new one today, until I found this vid.
Best video on the subject and well explained without big mumbo jumbo. I like your clear presentation, well demonstrated, and showed the inner parts of the starter. I did not find any video on RUclips with this clarity. I really appreciate your dedication and sharing of knowledge with public. It is very helpful and it will save a lot of money. Thank you very much for this upload. I liked your video. Keep up the good sharing.
Nice cleaning up. A tricky part is pushing and holding back the four brushes while inserting the commutator. Several ways: Tie wraps, a socket under them, etc. You should also try to disassemble the gear reduction box, clean and grease. You should replace the brushes too if you can find them.
Thanks! Good tips 😉Brushes was in good condition and to replace them need to solder connection and to buy new ones need special order so I decided to leave original and over all this starter is pretty complicated. For more simple starters I agree with you 100%, do everything while you there ✌
Nice video. I needed a refresher after 40 years of bolting on replacements for customers. Thank you. The commutator just dropping into the brushes doesn't look familiar at all though. I remember that being the nightmare of electric motor rebuilds "back in the day"... holding the spring loaded brushes back until the commutator was in place, while still being able to release them once it was seated.
Thanks! Usually hobby mechanics like me have a different experience when you love your car and don't count the time you spend on it, so you find yourself doing things like that 😅
Legend. My wife’s Freelander 2 wouldn’t start. Assumed a flat battery but turned out to be the starter motor. Followed your video and hey presto. Thanks for the great video. 👍👍👍
solid. i just did my 911 and not only saved a few hundred but also got the car back on the road in a day. some tricks that may be helpful for other cars: 1. mark the orientation of EVERYTHING with a paint pen as you disassemble 2. i used red scotchbrite for the brushes and armature 3. clean everything with electrical contact cleaner 4. use small zipties to hold the brushes in the holders as you reassemble 5. then place the largest socket that will fit inside the brushes to hold them compressed and cut the zipties 6. reassemble rock and roll.
I used to work in a starter repair factory. We would do about 150 a day. If you want to strip a sealed solenoid then here`s how. First of all get the solder hot and flick the solenoid so the solder flys out the hole. Once the wires are all clear then get some nice thick angle iron. Drill three holes matching the solenoid attaching holes. Then drill one in the middle of the holes big enough to fit a 3/8th extension bar. Put a socket in the solenoid hole that fits nice. Screw the screws through the angle iron and into the solenoid holes. Be careful not to go to far as the copper windings inside will be damaged. So you might need washers. Just wind in with you hand to save damage. Once the solenoid is fitted to the angle iron then insert the 3/8 extension bar through the middle hole. Get a big vice and put 2 big spacers each side of the solenoid and put in the vice so the extension bar is on one jaw and the 2 big spacers with the solenoid are on the other jaw. Then close the vice and the extension bar should push the solenoid apart. When it apart you have to open the metal case with a hammer to get it back together to get rid of the lip.
thanks. seems you could have your own shop... sounds like a bit of work, not worth my time since a new one is not too expensive, compared to this amount of work.

It is a good job to do on your car, I bet it will increase starter life 2x especially if you change starter brushes. Also put bearing grease on gears, because in most cars they are visible unlike mine
I came to youtube to find a video on rebuilding a starter for my LeSabre hoping to teach my daughter's like. My daddy taught me back in the 80's when I was like 12 or 13. Great video. Thanx. I did this similar thing to my condenser fan on my truck for air con. I used high grit sandpaper to polish the copper contacts and cleaned it out inside. Also dressed the brushes. Sometimes it wouldn't start, or just didn't run nearly as high speed as it does now. It turns on every time now and boy does it run fast. Anyway Thanx
This is so much better than just buying a new starter for $100+ and dumping the old one, saves money and less wasteful. Small things like these can add up and prevent a lot of unnecessary waste.
This video is very helpful for people with starter issue however the issue with this car wasn't the starter and I did not notice a big difference after you cleaned the starter as far as starting the car. Yes they can be replaced. It is called starter motor brushes, but I suggest to replace whole unit that comes with holder. (so you don't need to solder independent brushes - in this case all 4)
If you mean grease on gears and bearing, than sure you can clean it with carb or brake cleaners but don't forget to lubricate it with new grease after cleaning

My X5 E53 also starting with bad sound. And now i have to try 4-5x to get motor started. Starter have no power, like allmost dead. Is cleaning enaugh? Does someone have experience? Or is there probably bad brushes?
I would recommend a good clean and grease, it would probably be a good idea to replace the brushes, but only after disassembly you can tell if you really need to. Here I leave link to my video about most common bad starter sounds ruclips.net/video/f7bTSm-sHBk/видео.html Depending on noise cleaning may not be enough

It’s not a rebuilt it is just a cleanup? While you were at it I would have changed the contacts in the solenoid/relay, it is what fails first, typically. On my Toyota Sienna it’s $6 to $16 depending on how many parts you charge (just one contact to two contacts + plunger). The brushes seemed ok. They are the second point of failure.
In this situation it was just blowing dust with compressed air and then lubrication with liquid grease. Of course would be better to disassemble, check, clean manually and put grease, but this starter was too difficult to disassemble
Hi there, I recently bought a 2000 ford transit diesel camper but been having issues with diesel knocking apparently.Took it to my mechanic to fix the knocking got it back and went for a long drive which was fine stopped turned around headed back home but then as we approached a hilly part there was sudden jerk or surge in the engine, anyway long story short we made it home next day started up was ok shut it down and later on decided to run it down and get the tyres pumped and would you know it the knocking started up again.
If one is not comfortable doing this on their own, what kinds of shops can do this service? I just switched out an old starter motor on my 2014 Honda Accord and want to get the old one repaired or reconditioned, ready for the next replacement in the future.
My starter on Honda fit is making weird sounds on cold start-ups. Kind of like grinding wheezing sounds. Only when cold and only for a second while starting. Should I buy a replacement which are surprisingly expensive and hard to replace for this car or just ride it out until summer?
Probably your starter return solenoid is going out, so may be you could restore old starter. Leaving like that its up to you, how much harm it would do if one day you wont start car when you need to go somewhere.
@@Work_G Well when I gots to get pizza I can't have car not work. I could have to resort to eating noodles and salt. Return solenoid? My gut was telling me solenoid was bad but i can buy starter on ebay for $80 so I think I do that, and if I need to go to work and it won't start I take day off. And get pizza after.
Thanks! If you hear only clicking that means shaft goes out but not spinning. It can be fixed by cleaning connectors, relay inside solenoid or replacing brushes
Battery is not new and car was sitting over month, so I thought that the sound of struggling starter will be transferred through video better this way. Thanks!
What if there is power at the starter motor but the motor is not spinning and my car isint cranking at all does that still mean I can clean it out or do I have to change the whole thing? My car is a automatic Honda Civic 2003 model
When you turn key to on position and do not hear anything solution usually is to change whole starter motor (if battery is good). But it can be many issues, starting from ignition assembly, corrosion on starter electrical connectors, or starter solenoid failure or even locked engine and so on.

In this situation it was just blowing dust with compressed air and then lubrication with liquid grease. Of course would be better to disassemble, check, clean manually and put grease, but this starter was too difficult to disassemble
Thanks for the video, Awesome work!. do we need to renew the brushes of the DC starter motor if yes than what's the recommended period.
Replace if they look burnt or worn out
brilliant. Thank you. very helpful and clear.
Glad it helped ✌
What if the brush worned . I have to hit mine to get it start
In most starters brushes unit is easily changeable
@@Work_G mine was the clip that's tourn off ended up had to buy one
Hi there, I recently bought a 2000 ford transit diesel camper but been having issues with diesel knocking apparently.Took it to my mechanic to fix the knocking got it back and went for a long drive which was fine stopped turned around headed back home but then as we approached a hilly part there was sudden jerk or surge in the engine, anyway long story short we made it home next day started up was ok shut it down and later on decided to run it down and get the tyres pumped and would you know it the knocking started up again.
I am not sure about your problem, you say you hear knocking from engine while driving?
If one is not comfortable doing this on their own, what kinds of shops can do this service? I just switched out an old starter motor on my 2014 Honda Accord and want to get the old one repaired or reconditioned, ready for the next replacement in the future.
Usually there is shops that specialises in starters and alternators repairs
They might charge you 50% or more of what it cost to buy a starter. Depends on the vehicle of course.
Thank for the visuals.
Nice video........How come when I do it, I'm bruised and bleeding?
Excellent, well done and better explained :)
Bushings?
Excellent job 👍
Thanks
Excellent job
I might try fixing my 02 Harley starter
Thanks and good luck with your project ✌
Dammm good video but can tha starter be save if its just click clicking all tha time?
Thanks! If you hear only clicking that means shaft goes out but not spinning. It can be fixed by cleaning connectors, relay inside solenoid or replacing brushes
And your battery was almost dead too. Maybe you can also do an alternator rebuild too? Haha nice vids bro
Battery is not new and car was sitting over month, so I thought that the sound of struggling starter will be transferred through video better this way. Thanks!
you are the man awsome ill try and let you know if it worked. cool
Thanks 😎 I will wait for update!
I would also try to regenerate the battery with some desulfation system
Nice work, good job on the vid!
another excelent vidio
Glad you enjoyed it
In my Vista petrol no click sound coming all other lights working fine why Starter motor getting jam and what is average repair cost
I know the motor is fine, but there’s something at the motor or inside the Housing of the motor that I have to know about
What if there is power at the starter motor but the motor is not spinning and my car isint cranking at all does that still mean I can clean it out or do I have to change the whole thing? My car is a automatic Honda Civic 2003 model
When you turn key to on position and do not hear anything solution usually is to change whole starter motor (if battery is good). But it can be many issues, starting from ignition assembly, corrosion on starter electrical connectors, or starter solenoid failure or even locked engine and so on.
Fabuleux !
nice whistle
