- Difference before and after is not so noticeable on video like in real, it's so much better, even with more drained battery starter spins faster and engine starts easier. That is night and day difference. Ideally you want to replace starter brushes and if possible disassemble gear mechanism clean it and lubricate it.

I'd like to thank you for this video. I am a farmer and on Saturday at 3pm my tractor wouldn't start. The starter smoked a bit on its last try and I assumed it was dead. I watched your video then took my starter apart. I had nothing to lose since the tractor store was closed 'till Monday. It was extremely dirty with oily, greasy dirt. I cleaned it well and reassembled it. After that, I bench tested it (another YT video) and it worked! Today it has been working much better than before and I've transplanted cauliflower, zucchini and summer squash. I'd be down for days sourcing a new starter without this video. It feels good to solve a problem and keep trucking. Thanks man!
Thank You so much! I work for these kind of comments and I am very happy that it helped
@@Work_G still working! Thanks!
Sweet beats. I normally hate music playing in a vid. But you didnt talk, just worked on part. Very kool
Thank You
I just cleaned the starter from a 1960 tractor and it worked like a dream! Thanks for the making the video!
Thanks for watching
there's something very satisfying about watching an instructional video without an annoying voiceover.... well done.
Thank you, first time for me when someone enjoys no voice over vid!
Ќќ
Bro... it's like breathing mountain air, such a relief
fantastic video thank you!!!! just goes to show that in a typical throw away consumer world, there are still parts of our cars that we can truly fix, not just replace a part!!
Just did this to my starter and I used high temp grease and it works better than new thankyou!
Your welcome
Excellent, just did the same, and my car now starts. 2 and a half hours. Thanks for the lesson.
Glad it helped!
I used to work in a starter repair factory. We would do about 150 a day. If you want to strip a sealed solenoid then here`s how. First of all get the solder hot and flick the solenoid so the solder flys out the hole. Once the wires are all clear then get some nice thick angle iron. Drill three holes matching the solenoid attaching holes. Then drill one in the middle of the holes big enough to fit a 3/8th extension bar. Put a socket in the solenoid hole that fits nice. Screw the screws through the angle iron and into the solenoid holes. Be careful not to go to far as the copper windings inside will be damaged. So you might need washers. Just wind in with you hand to save damage. Once the solenoid is fitted to the angle iron then insert the 3/8 extension bar through the middle hole. Get a big vice and put 2 big spacers each side of the solenoid and put in the vice so the extension bar is on one jaw and the 2 big spacers with the solenoid are on the other jaw. Then close the vice and the extension bar should push the solenoid apart. When it apart you have to open the metal case with a hammer to get it back together to get rid of the lip.
thanks. seems you could have your own shop... sounds like a bit of work, not worth my time since a new one is not too expensive, compared to this amount of work.
@@galehess6676 Yeah i did all this when i was skint. Time is more important now.
Why don't you do a Video to show how it is done ?.... it would be so much better than writing an explanation of it
150 of those is a lot! I hope the pay was good 👍.
It was normal factory pay. We had loads of presses to do the work. I worked for Valeo and it was quite quick. I did one at home the other day. It`s very slow at home lol.

Best video on the subject and well explained without big mumbo jumbo. I like your clear presentation, well demonstrated, and showed the inner parts of the starter. I did not find any video on RUclips with this clarity. I really appreciate your dedication and sharing of knowledge with public. It is very helpful and it will save a lot of money. Thank you very much for this upload. I liked your video. Keep up the good sharing.
Thank YOU for good words, this makes me happy and motivates even more ❤️
I purchased a new starter motor for my Same Corsaro 70 Tractor. The tractor starts in about 3 seconds during which time a loud rattling sound comes from the Starter Motor. Does anyone have any ideas.
Ollolllo
This video is unbelievably perfect.
Thank You very much
Thanks for the help. I just cleaned my 2006 Subaru Outback Wagons starter today. It's been giving me problems for the past month. I was about to buy a new one today, until I found this vid.
Hope it helps ✌
Mesmerizing. So dope. The music makes it all that much better!!
Nice cleaning up. A tricky part is pushing and holding back the four brushes while inserting the commutator. Several ways: Tie wraps, a socket under them, etc. You should also try to disassemble the gear reduction box, clean and grease. You should replace the brushes too if you can find them.
Thanks! Good tips 😉Brushes was in good condition and to replace them need to solder connection and to buy new ones need special order so I decided to leave original and over all this starter is pretty complicated. For more simple starters I agree with you 100%, do everything while you there ✌
From showing what a bad starter sounds like, to rebuilding it. What a video
Thank you! It wasn't bad, can say "very used"
This is very helpful, thanks, there's something very satisfying about doing this and similar refurbs imo, big money saver too.
Thank You!!!
Well that looks bloody relatively easy to get to. Mine's a nightmare and a half to get to 😆(nissan s13 with a ca). Great video :)
Excellent video - thanks a lot. A thorough cleaning saved my starter (and wallet ;)
I am happy that it helped
Wow I’m impressed, probably an hours work will save me hundreds of pounds in a new part and labour. My car is a Rover 75 1.8 Turbo manual saloon.
I will try this on my lexus before i spend 200 bucks. with 181k miles, im sure a good cleaning will do the job. Thank you for sharing
Terima kasih thank you boss easy to understand 👍👍👍👍.. good job bro 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Legend. My wife’s Freelander 2 wouldn’t start. Assumed a flat battery but turned out to be the starter motor. Followed your video and hey presto. Thanks for the great video. 👍👍👍
Happy to help ✌
Thank you for posting.
Great satisfaction doing yourself and a small saving too
Thank You!
Thanks for this, I thought that my parents were going to have to spend a couple hundred on a new starter motor for our Subaru Liberty GX 1995, but I instead went down to the garage (the car was parked outside because it wouldn’t run to get in) and I gave it a bit of a polish. Admittedly I shouldn’t have but I decided that it was a better option.
solid. i just did my 911 and not only saved a few hundred but also got the car back on the road in a day. some tricks that may be helpful for other cars:
1. mark the orientation of EVERYTHING with a paint pen as you disassemble
2. i used red scotchbrite for the brushes and armature
3. clean everything with electrical contact cleaner
4. use small zipties to hold the brushes in the holders as you reassemble
5. then place the largest socket that will fit inside the brushes to hold them compressed and cut the zipties
6. reassemble
rock and roll.
Thanks for watching and sharing tips and tricks 😎
Use brake & clutch cleaner to wash it out instead of doing it dry, it's more effective..
or use contact cleaner
This is so much better than just buying a new starter for $100+ and dumping the old one, saves money and less wasteful. Small things like these can add up and prevent a lot of unnecessary waste.
Good point
That was GREAT 👍 unless something needs to be explained just start the work and finish it then read your comment's to see if anyone has any questions!! Nice Work!!!!
Thank you!
This is what I love about YT. Thank you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Cheers mate , just what I needed to see to replace brush’s on a E85 Z4 👌
Nice!
good video...eerie music!
brilliant. Thank you. very helpful and clear.
Glad it helped ✌
Excellent, well done and better explained :)
Awesome video friend. Fixed my jeeps starter by doing this. Thanks again.
Glad to hear
Usually a good idea to clean the solenoid mechanism as well, as this would fix a sticking gear.
Great video. I need to see how to change the selenoid too.
Great for reconditioning a starter motor without replacing any parts in it !!
Thank for the visuals.
all right listen with the bench work we got no problem. i'm good with the casts, the dies, the whole nine yards
I also put anti seize any bolts removed and dielectric grease on contacts. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks and great job!
Thank you for sharing such sacred knowledge 🙏 ❤️ you earned a subscriber!!
A big thank You 👏
Hell yeah straight to the point I subscribed
Thanks!
Spectacular video, so well done 👍👍👍
Thanks
good beat
Great video. Thanx. I did this similar thing to my condenser fan on my truck for air con. I used high grit sandpaper to polish the copper contacts and cleaned it out inside. Also dressed the brushes. Sometimes it wouldn't start, or just didn't run nearly as high speed as it does now. It turns on every time now and boy does it run fast. Anyway Thanx
Nice to hear that
thanks for the tips
You're welcome
Nice work, good job on the vid!
I came to youtube to find a video on rebuilding a starter for my LeSabre hoping to teach my daughter's like. My daddy taught me back in the 80's when I was like 12 or 13. Sadly he passed when i was 17. I hated having to sit there and watch and listen to him teach me(teenagers right) now I'm blessed he had shown me so much stuff to do with cars & motorcycles. Thanks for making this video. It brought back sad but heart warming memories. Now I can pass this knowledge on to my daughters. P.s. wish you would of posted what you was used to clean the parts. Like was it a hard bristle brush? Was the blue thing sand paper? If so what grade? And thank you💞💞💞
Thanks! You can use that brush and sandpaper should be about P600
Nice job!
Thank you I appreciate that
Great work, but have you tried to loosen long studs pointing from planetary gearbox?
Excellent job
I might try fixing my 02 Harley starter
Thanks and good luck with your project ✌
Excellent job 👍
Thanks
Good work 👍 big difference
Thanks
Dzięki!
Excellent job👍
Thanks!
nice whistle
A good battery test would be recommended on that as that battery is almost discharged and far from a healthy 12.4 to 12.7 I would expect to give a starter a the required power but even then it's not sufficient as I tested s car last week that produced 0 cca but had 12.37v of charge, great video though
Good job. My field windings were melted though 😭
Thank you. Yeah sometimes you find unexpected issues
Love the gangsta music. lol
Good stuff. I hope my starter is that easy to recondition.
If it working ok right now, after this it will be only better. AlsoI recommend to replace brushes if you can
@@Work_G agree while it was stripped.
Great video mine was playing up when car was at operating temp. Mechanic mate thought i was mad and should buy a new (cheap chinese one he suggested ..) i didnt want to give up on my old hitachi beast turns out it was full of carbon and just needed a good clean works like new now get another 300thousand out of it i hope
Nice! 🤝 And sometimes I get comments like "it is just clean up, not gonna do anything..."
you are the man awsome ill try and let you know if it worked. cool
Thanks 😎 I will wait for update!
👍👍Good
Thanks for the visit
I need to try this, my old Focus isn't starting sometimes and today i confirmed that it's the starter, i don't wanna throw 80 euros at it because i'm retiring the old girl after 240k km this September, let's hope it works just for a bit more!
I wish you good luck
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
My starter seems to be having an intermittent issue, although sometimes there’s another issue where my dashboard is wonky and my fuel pump doesn’t prime so it may be that in combination. Regardless once it starts priming again I get a click at the starter but it doesn’t turn even directly engaging the starter so it may be fixable without even rebuilding it, just a cleanup
clean ground which is the interface with motor housing, the housing of the starter is probably dirty where it meets the motor housing and grounds the circuit, and clean all contacts.
Liked the music.
Thanks 🖐
Neat! My starter is all slow and lazy sounding. I'm wondering if I could just clean and lube it, rather than replace 🤔
It should do the job, may be put new brushes and it will work like new
It's an excellent idea for salvaging starters instead of throwing them out or buying a new one. I bought my starter from Autozone with a lifetime warranty and returned it for a new one when it died. Unfortunately, I have done this several times with my Chrysler Town and Country 2014, saving me time and money. Chrysler dealer in Tampa Fl. wanted $1100 to replace my mini van, of course, I found another alternative.
True and most of times fixed original is better than alternative manufacturer part
Brilliant demonstration ♠️
Do you think it'd be possible to bring a marine starter motor back to life, it was partially submerged in fresh water for about three months,
Its hard to explain, but the top part with the cables on was not under water nor was the rear of the unit, because of the angle of the engine only the front bit that goes into the engine was fully submerged..
What'd reckon folks? All suggestions greatly received
In theory it should work after full rebuild and refresh, but practically I can't tell
ruclips.net/video/9mTWic4qgm4/видео.html
another excelent vidio
Glad you enjoyed it
Very good video. Wish I had seen it sooner. But then I ordered a new one for 40 euro...the time I spend on a revision costs me 3 times more
Thanks 😉 Next time you will know 👍
Great video
Thanks
Good video
Thanks!
Had to watch it twice. That beat had me free styling the first time no bull shit. That beat it hitting
Thanks for the video, Awesome work!. do we need to renew the brushes of the DC starter motor if yes than what's the recommended period.
Replace if they look burnt or worn out
Tha fact it's a bmw what's make this great 👍
Make for a nice cleaning video but not to sure on the making it like new again. And I say this as nothing was replaced just cleaned up.
I would also try to regenerate the battery with some desulfation system
Can I use electric part cleaner? The one to clean alternators and stuff as well while cleaning?
Probably yes, but don't forget to dry it and grease it
what are the best aftermarket brand for replacement
Can I use high temp. grease or Multi-purpose grease?
Also, what kind of lubricant is that? Any alternatives?
Yes you can, just dont put it to much. I used Berner bearing grease and ptfe lubricant
Hi there, I recently bought a 2000 ford transit diesel camper but been having issues with diesel knocking apparently.Took it to my mechanic to fix the knocking got it back and went for a long drive which was fine stopped turned around headed back home but then as we approached a hilly part there was sudden jerk or surge in the engine, anyway long story short we made it home next day started up was ok shut it down and later on decided to run it down and get the tyres pumped and would you know it the knocking started up again.
I am not sure about your problem, you say you hear knocking from engine while driving?
Great video 👍 but will this work if the starter can't even crank?
Thanks! It can work if the problem is in wires connection or brushes
Excellent video. Just replaced starter motor on my boys VW Polo with a recon unit. The old one started the car without a problem but after most starts would emit a short, 1 sec grating sound, any idea what bit was failing and if it's a DIY fix as per your video?
Thank you! Sounds like broken return spring or return solenoid itself is bad.
Hello , Great job fixing the starter motor , i have one problem in my VW Golf 5 2.0L 2005 , when the engine its cold start good , but when the engine its warm its last more , around 3-4 second to start , Should be the starter or something else ?!!
Hi, Thank You! It can be starter but usually starters act same on cold and hot engine, so I can only suspect other problem like fuel issue or faulty sensor
GetWork i have one problem with Turbo , its Turbo charger Oberboost , can be this ?
@@henrilica483 My brother has the same problem on his 1.9 TDI. Snags the key from your hand when cold but a bitch to start when warm/hot. They usually get that with age: starter not at 100% cranking power, battery the same, leads that get a bit corroded and whatnot. The fix: the high route is to get the ECU flashed; the low (and much cheaper) route is to install a TDI Hot Start Magic Button where you're bypassing the coolant temp sensor only for when you hot start the car, tricking the ECU into thinking the engine is stone cold and squirt more fuel and faster. That's what my brother has on his Golf and it works. Everytime. This dude explains it overall but I'm sure you can find more about it online: ruclips.net/video/rhfkjJMtVSU/видео.html&app=desktop
Now for the Overboost it's more likely the VG part in the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) that TDIs have. Either the vacuum thing that moves the vanes inside the turbo that control flow and turbo RPM is...well...broken...OR the vanes are sticking open/closed. I've seen some videos of people squirting oven cleaner inside the hot side of the turbo to break up the carbon and free the vanes. Search for that.
Cheers!
@Henri: if by "start" you mean that it cranks fine when hot or cold, but that the engine won't "catch" (start running by itself) quickly when warmed up, that could be many things. Could be temp sensor reporting that the engine is still cold and giving too much fuel when warmed up. Does the exhaust smell like raw gas at all? This is an indication of over-rich mixture and possibly a temp sensor gone bad.
The engine isn't "chipped" is it? If so, all bets are off. You have to go to the "chipper" company and ask them.
How do you check the bushing and bearing for wear? Also how do you check the solenoid for wear? Thanks.
Most important is sound, how it sounds in car, how it sounds and feels when you spin it by hand and last one is looking to disassembled.
Nice video........How come when I do it, I'm bruised and bleeding?
I did this today in college we took apart today
Thats great!
My starter on Honda fit is making weird sounds on cold start-ups. Kind of like grinding wheezing sounds. Only when cold and only for a second while starting. Should I buy a replacement which are surprisingly expensive and hard to replace for this car or just ride it out until summer?
Probably your starter return solenoid is going out, so may be you could restore old starter. Leaving like that its up to you, how much harm it would do if one day you wont start car when you need to go somewhere.
@@Work_G Well when I gots to get pizza I can't have car not work. I could have to resort to eating noodles and salt. Return solenoid? My gut was telling me solenoid was bad but i can buy starter on ebay for $80 so I think I do that, and if I need to go to work and it won't start I take day off. And get pizza after.
Woah this guys gotta tighten up his bolts they came right off!
I loosen them before filming to avoid struggling on camera because not a lot of space to work and film at the same time
That beat is nice too 🔥
what type of bearing grease did you use here in the video on the starter for the BMW ?
I can't remember exact one but it is not critical because all bearing greases can handle heat pretty well
At 3:10 could I replace that part with another in better shape make a Frankenstein starter kinda
Cleaning certainly helped. But at only 12.2v, that's a tired battery!
True it is time to replace it
And your battery was almost dead too. Maybe you can also do an alternator rebuild too? Haha nice vids bro
Battery is not new and car was sitting over month, so I thought that the sound of struggling starter will be transferred through video better this way. Thanks!
It’s not a rebuilt it is just a cleanup?
While you were at it I would have changed the contacts in the solenoid/relay, it is what fails first, typically.
On my Toyota Sienna it’s $6 to $16 depending on how many parts you charge (just one contact to two contacts + plunger).
The brushes seemed ok. They are the second point of failure.
If one is not comfortable doing this on their own, what kinds of shops can do this service? I just switched out an old starter motor on my 2014 Honda Accord and want to get the old one repaired or reconditioned, ready for the next replacement in the future.
Usually there is shops that specialises in starters and alternators repairs
They might charge you 50% or more of what it cost to buy a starter. Depends on the vehicle of course.
I would've removed and rebuilt the solenoid to since it was out of the vehicle.
Dammm good video but can tha starter be save if its just click clicking all tha time?
Thanks! If you hear only clicking that means shaft goes out but not spinning. It can be fixed by cleaning connectors, relay inside solenoid or replacing brushes
Seems to me it's better to replace as the parts wear out.
