Thank you
For a case of your favorite beer! Thanks!
Thank you, truly appreciate it🙌
legend!
I just have to say that this IS the best video tutorial on starter replacement. Most people talk too much or they show the end result first and they try to explain how they did it which is garbage. Thank you for taking the time to explain and show how to properly do everything to replace this difficult piece, I highly appreciate it. 👍
Thank you for your feedback, happy to help👍
3 minutes in the videos and he's still talking an not yet explain so I would say yes he still talks a bit too much. Ppl want to get right to replacing. Nothing else. If they want to trouble shoot they'll kook up that. But when we look up starter replacement just get right to it without the 3 minutes of un wanted explanation.
@@ZayKhanGunna Honestly, what he was talking about in the 3min means a lot. He explains it and backed it up with real info which helps you diagnose what could happen.
I just replaced the starter motor on my BMW 323i thanks to your comprehensive tutorial! Keep up the great work man.
I had no issues at all and the car started perfectly! Tip to others: don't drop any studs/nuts while working in the engine bay!
Happy to help👍
I just changed my starter from this video and it was very efficient. Your explanation and video quality is great!
Took me about 5 hours to complete!
Good job, happy to help👍
You are a rockstar!!! My car had a few slow starts and one day just did not start. I watched your video and followed along and boom, it’s running. Thank you!
Thank you, happy to help👍
bro im amazed you did the job and stopping to explain and it took you under 30 minutes, last winter mine died and was close to -40 no way I was working on it, but shop took it in after a $200 tow, and they charged me 2.9 hours labor $375 and $400 for oem starter, these crooks man. good job though bro appreciate your vids. Thinking to tackle the VCG this spring with your video.
They always do that. They LIE. they know it's not going to take over 2 hours. I would have done this in an hour. I've worked on my E90.
He is great about describing the work step by step and using “basic” tools most of us already own.
@@flexiblestrategist9922 Yah thats what I thought, because when I went back to pickup the car, the person working on it or whoever unplugged my dashcam, I was hoping to see some footage lol. Money grabbing crooks.. and thats awesome man, best way to do it right and save money 👍🏼
@@jasonmunger8409 I agree, Tim's the man 👍🏼
Thanks Tim, you've helped another Tim get his BMW back on the road.
Just did this today. Thank you! It truly is 99%of the time an N51/N52 engine fails to start.
I really hate that PCV pipe in the back near the firewall. Damn that was so difficult, pushing it from the back while pressing down the top while pulling it helped out a lot. Now I understand how BMW connectors work.
All I have to say is tearing this engine down to expose the valves really shows the quality of the plastic parts. My 328i has over 135k and all the plastic connections click nicely.
I got to see all the intake valves and they are pristine! I’m thankful that this engine is port injected. The design and construction of the N51/N52 is 👌
Loved the tool layout out front! I haven’t been working on my e90 for very long and am still collecting various tools for the different jobs I’m running into.
🙌
you are legend. I was panicking when I thought it was the battery which I changed and it didn't want to crank. Glad I didn't take it to the shop yet. I will be doing this repair myself.
Happy to help🙌
Thanks a lot Zeiten! I’ve seen all variants of your starter video and this helped me gain confidence to do it on my car earlier this week! Really appreciate it!
Happy to help👍
I used your older video last year when my starter went out; It was the best video. My car started to crank slow, until one day it just wouldn't crank at all.
This isn't a "hard" DIY, just time consuming and tedious.
I used the Bosch and a year later it is still holding up strong.
Happy to help🙌
Hi there I am busy doing my BMW E90 starter self ...I am following everything you say
Pay close attention to all the details and good luck👍
Seems like good chance to replace ccv or something and crankshaft position sensor when you are there. I hope my starter will last long
Great video and appreciate all the detailed steps. On my 2010 e90 328i, I hear one click when I press the start button. The battery is good and there are no codes on the diagnostic tool. Could this be the starter? I’m thinking the starter solenoid may not be engaging the starter. Or maybe a relay if there is one.
yes, most likely the starter 99% chance
by far the best video for e90 starter and intake manifold swap. will be tackling the 3 stage swap and tune today! thanks again
Literally did everything you mentioned of "chasing ghosts" lol I'll swap mine out today and see what happens. 👍🏻
Tim , thank you for the starter diy. You did one for the X5 N52 , a few years back. You are really very thorough and go over step to step.
It is very different for N55/X5 2011. ? Would appreciate if you could do diy.
Thank you, in principle it’s exactly the same, the difference would be in starter bolts you’ll need a e10 wrench to take them out (special tool) the sockets don’t really fit in there. I’ll make one as soon as opportunity arises👍
Maybe I missed it, but I re-watched the beginning, but did you disconnect the battery? Or is that not required when working with the starter? I assumed it would be.
No, i rarely disconnect the battery on any repairs, as long as you are carful nothing is gonna happen
So you're not to worried about torqueing it back to spec? Just goodentight?
Hi Tim. I always enjoy watching your instructional videos. Although I have an x5 E70 it was still good watching this whole video too because the symptoms part has given me reassurance that it is the starter. I just found it strange that my no crank, no click, no start issue just happened suddenly with no pre warning sign. Just curious but is it absolutely necessary to remove the throttle body and those frame side bars and plastic stuff below the windshield or do you just do it to have extra space to carry out the work? Thx. for sharing.👍
Thanks for feedback, here is the video for e70 x5 starter replacement

I always remove intake manifold for starter replacement, it’s easier to clear the field rather than work around it, don’t be scared all of my videos show disassembly and installation
@@Zeiten Hi Tim. Thx for the reply. I just went to check the battery's voltage using the hidden menu on dash and when I first put in the fob and pressed start button without depressing the brake I got a warning about "high battery drain when vehicle stationary". This is the first time I ever got this message and battery is 11.7 v. This could have happened because over the past 2 days on checking various potential causes of no crank no start issue I checked the KL30g fuse in the rear, CAS fuses and possible ground problem and tried a number of times to start the X5 but nada. I could have unintentionally drained the battery in the process. Last thing I am going to do is have a friend come over tomorrow with a generic scanner to check what fault codes there could be before I likely will have to accept that it is the starter. Your videos are a great help for me to do the starter motor replacement. I'll do the replacement in 2 days after I get a new Bosch starter. Is this a common problem with the more recent BMW's ? I have owned at least 3 older BMW's, Jeep, VW, Rover, Volvo, Renault, Ford etc over the past 40 years and never once had to replace a starter. Luckily, the only good thing is that it happened at home and not elsewhere.
Thx again for sharing. Your videos are the best.
Thank you so much, doing this job on my e92 over the weekend!
Happy to help👍
hey thank you a lot for the video,
I did everything step by step.
At the first starting the car didnt start I helped with the battery.
The battery became very low after so many starting trys before.
It started normally after a few seconds I got very serious misfires and the engine stopped and wouldn't start again.
Do you've any idea?
Sorry for my bad english😂
Recheck every connection, usually people forget to plug in tank vent hose right behind throttle body
I used your video to replace my starter... THANK YOU!
Happy to help🙌
Going to replace my this weekend. thank you.😀😀
Happy to help👍
Hi Tim, great detailed video as always Sir. professional at work!! 100 percent Question, i know i do not have any problem with my 2013 x5 n55 (knock on wood for good luck) as to any starter but if and whenever i do have an issue someday in the future, what brand do you recommend to use??, the best brand here you say is Bosch, and Valeo, is this the best for 2013 x5 N55 3.0 litre ty sir! nice to see you staying active and posting great detailed videos as always!! 100--100
Thank you and yes i’d say stick with Bosch well known and established manufacturer supplying consistently good parts
@@Zeiten ,thanking you for your prompt response!! ty sir, Stay safe ( lots of snow in NL Canada now still lolo ty
@battlehrfred thank you, don’t break your car😁
Great work Tim
Thank you🙌
Thanks! You helped me through replacing my starter
🙌
do you have to unplug the battery?
Yes you should any time you work under the hood.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Happy to help🙌
What is the reason for not using e12 like you are supposed to?
First of all it’s e14, secondly it won’t fit unless you use some kind of slim wrench
@@Zeiten .......right
Gracias Zeiten for sharing your knowledge...
Happy to help, thanks for watching 🙌
Just did it the craziest 5 hours why does bmw have the starter under the intake manifold
Hi, can you replace the starter from the bottom of the car E90 320d N47
do you suggest any scanners?
Very well executed video
I replaced a starter in a 2011 328i convertible that finally went out in a grocery store parking lot. It took about 6 months from first noticing labored start. I also changed out the crankshaft sensor while I have the intake manifold off. Now I’m getting a long crank with start. It starts every time, just takes a bit to fire up. Could it be the crankshaft sensor or something different?
Most likely crankshaft sensor, what brand did you use? Where did you get it? Don’t fix something that is not broken🤷♂️
@@Zeiten rock auto. I will need to look at brand. It wasn’t OEM. I agree. I think I caused an issue by replacing that sensor. Today got a code p1014 as well.
@JuanRodriguez-yl9oq get siemens vdo and you’ll be fine
Thanks boss, very good video.
Thank you🙌
Congratulations for your channel
Great tips to diagnose it, as possible OEM always for electric and electronics.
Continuing with electric, you could for next videos make an EPS electric power steering replacement, I think there is no need for software.
BimmerN53
Packed tight in there as usual 😂
🤷♂️😁
How do you go about taking off the e14 bolt in the back of the starter if the bolt head is stripped?
Depends on how bad is it, i’ve dealt with a few of those, it can be accessed from the bottom. Usually i hammer socket in and it does the job
A little shorter bc there is video cuts. Didn't see all those little screws on the bottom that go back in
Im in the process of replacing my starter...i reset the cpu cleared codes on the car...my car did not want to start...24 hrs later i tried one more time to start it, to .move it sp i can work on the starter...is this possible...?.can it be something else?
Can speed sensors cause the electrical components to have issue's
Highly doubt it
I can't find the video you made of the x5 intake manifold replacement.... please help ...
There isn’t one, you can check the link in description for x5 starter replacement and use it as reference for intake manifold replacement
Middle brace fastener is e18
Most of BMWs have a dashboard problems just reset the both batteries for 5 minutes and then the dashboard will work
one again greatvideo
Damn bro it's been awhile😂, still waiting on the z-man t-shirts and stuff
Zeiten shirt has been available for a bit i’ll check if it is still for sale😁 welcome back😉
Can I use any ATF fluid on my BMW x5 2008 3.0si e70 without adaptive drive
No, zf for transmission
@@Zeiten I'm not sure what fluid my BMW has, it looks very dark brown on the cap it says ATF fluid but below where it says ATF it also says chf11s so I'm a little confused
@armandohilario use chf 11s fluid, you can find it in any autoparts store
@@Zeiten It doesn't matter that the system does not have active drive?
@armandohilario no
My BMW is cranking but not starting can you help?
What scan tool do you have? What year and model?
2011 328i sedan
Think OBD 20
I changed fuel pump and filter
There is a fuel pump control module that usually fails ekpm3, you’ll need to coded after replacement
Mine just stopped working one day. No nothing at all..no noise, no nothing. Got me stranded. LOL
Bruh me too literally last week
Bro me right now lol
3 days ago for me then I chased ghosts. my new starter will be here tomorrow
bro I need you to come over my house Pronto,, my 328 is whistling something dangerous
Sure as long as you are in LA, reach out
Im not sure why but im getting 3 codes p0123 p0222 and p1417
Check your throttle body connection
Ok thanks ill check
@@Zeiten it was the connector
@VIS202 very common for people to forget to plug it in👍
@Zeiten really appreciate your help and response. If it wasn't for your video, I wouldn't have even tried to change it myself.
Why didn't you just go from underneath I have no idea. This is definitely not the fastest way bro. Damn. Only 1 dust cover to unclip from underneath. And hellooo there's your starter motor lol.
😂😂

Do you think I could do it that way shit would be so much easier
I saw a video on it, they swapped it out in 20 min including the time to jack it up.
