  • On the 23rd June 2024 Steamrail Victoria visited the Sunbury Line for A series of steam & electric shuttles with steam locomotive A2 986 & the Tait EMU between Watergardens and Sunbury. After a successful outing last year the train performed five shuttle trips between the two stations with the Tait leading towards Sunbury and the A2 leading towards Watergardens.
We start the video trackside in Keilor Downs where we see the A2 lead tender-first with the transfer train of passengers from Flinders Street and Watergardens. After arriving at Watergardens we see the A2 and the Tait run around from platform 2 onto platform 3 so that the two trains would be in the correct position for the days' shuttle trips. Once that's done we see the train depart with the Tait leading the first shuttle trip.
For last years outing I mainly focused on getting clips at train stations along the line so this year I decided to focus on... level crossings! The remaining four level crossings on the Sunbury Line will be removed by 2025 so I decided to film all my clips for this video at three of the level crossings including Holdens Road, Old Calder Highway, and Watsons Road. No Calder Park Drive level crossing unfortunately; that crossing is already a large construction site so access would have been difficult.

This video marks a milestone for my channel as it's my first ever video to be uploaded in 4K resolution! The fact I just got my Panasonic VXF1 back from repair and that I recently built a new computer with a different editing software now means that I can film and edit 4K video for the first time.

I was aboard the second shuttle that day, and enjoyed riding in the vintage EMU, although it was rather busy. As for A2 986, she was the only steam locomotive I saw in steam throughout the trip. The other steamers I saw were all static exhibits at the Newport Railway Museum.
On the way up to Sunbury, I also noticed that overbridge under construction to replace one of the level crossings.

The train goes so much faster with A2 986 leading. My friend was on the train, shuttle 4 I believe and he also said the tait set was a bit slower. It’s great to see you in 4K mate.

Awesome video! I was unfortunately unable to film these shuttles so it's great that you made it out there, awesome to see it in 4K too!

Was a great sunny day to be out and about, but I piked it on this occasion, so thanks for uploading this for me to see what I missed. (Thanks also to Comeng998 for the different view.) My chariot needed a battery recharge so I spent the sunny afternoon driving and hiking to inspect two big holes at Burwood and Heatherton. No prizes for guessing what that was about. Hope to catch up with you on your special day out my way if you are out and about.🙂😉🙂

The reason why the A2 was tender first is because it was diverted via the rrl because the Sunbury line was closed between Sunshine and North Melbourne due to HCMT testing.
