- Indiana faces off against Duke in the Cincinnati Regional in 1987. Duke went to the championship game the previous year, while IU would win the national title this year. Hoosiers win 88-82.

Duke played very well this game, prepared Indiana well to march on and win this tournament. Knight was so confident and relaxed, as he was vs Duke in ‘92 as well. Both games had almost a week to prepare for.
Coach K hall of fame speech, Knights intro says it all. If haven’t watched that before, go now, it’s a treat!
IU and Cal were the two teams that kept K from continuing his run of FFs (still 7 in 9 years) IU was just the better team this tournament-more seasoned. But Duke started mostly sophomores other than Amaker and as you said played very well.
What an amazing tournament that was!

This was a rebuilding year for Duke.
IIRC they were picked to finish 6th in the ACC and they still got to the Sweet 16. This team despite being the only team between 1986-92 not to make the Final Four also helped lay the foundation for future success
@@paulsonj72 Agreed, this year 87 and 88 convinced me Duke was for real and not going away despite losing the great class of Dawkins, Bilas, Alairie, etc.
Strickland, Ammaker, Ferry, & Snyder is rebuilding ? No. IU had who? Garrett had a decent NBA role-playing NBA career. Literally no other IU player whiffed the NBA. Knight owned the ACC his entire career with far less NBA-level talent
@@slpguy6026 Nobody knew how good the replacements would be for Duke. The Blue Devils had lost four starters from the 1985-86 team including Johnny Dawkins and people felt with those starters gone Duke would slide back down in the ACC.(FWIW Jay Bilias was another one of the starters who had graduated in the spring of 1986)
Lundquist describes the best thing about this team at 36:24. Everybody could contribute. Sure, Steve was the face of the team, deservedly so, but it was a team.
The team received its first (of many!) severe tournament tests at 1:10:28. Duke has rallied and trails by only 2 with under 3 minutes to play...IU responds with two huge buckets, and a pattern of performing when it is absolutely needed is established.
Well, we handled Duke, so surely we'll just roll over LSU, no problem. lol
Looked at the stats and all five starts averaged in double figures in scoring that year. Of course Alford was the key but they had a solid inside game too with the late Darell Thomas and Dean Garett manning the post positions
It's amazing that Keith Smart couldn't make a dent in the NBA. Great slasher and defender. Was it his outside shot or being a 2 in a 1's body?
I watched Smart play one or two seasons for the Rapid City Thrillers, a CBA team in the mid-90's. My assessment was that his speed and jumping ability kept in him in the league, but his lack of consistent shooting just didn't make him a valuable commodity. Too bad, he was fun to watch.

Knight owned K and Dean Smith his entire career, even with far less NBA-level talent. He had the best game-day coaching skills ever. Others had better recruiting skills, arguably due to unethical practices

Recruiting is part of coaching college. By any measure the student surpassed the teacher with K and Knight
