      Almost like the unofficial start to the college basketball season. They'd let the #2 announcing team also call a game, I remember Jim Valvano's ABC debut was here. Then CBS would start televising this when they lost the NFL for a few years back in the 90's. Now, this weekend is reserved unfort. for college conference football championship games.

    Dicky V sure was hating on Jenkins during this game. Keith Jackson keep on talking about Jenkins passing up shots. At around the 6 minute timeout you can see Coach Sutton pointing on the floor telling Jenkins to shoot the ball. Which turned the game for UK. Sutton sure could coach.

      Losing Steve Alford?

    • @uncklebuckle6859
      @uncklebuckle6859 4 года назад +10

      Losing Alford and Daryl Thomas (RIP) were huge losses. Alford hit 107 3's in '87, and they had very little shooting in '88 until the emergence of Jay Edwards. The biggest issue was the fact that Knight put Ricky Calloway in the doghouse early in the year and it obviously hurt the morale of the team. If '89 was Knight's best coaching job, '88 was probably his worst.

    • @kevinwilkins3248
      @kevinwilkins3248 4 года назад +1

      @@BAYAREA-kd1ig Yep. Alford was a 2 time 1st Team All American, averaging 22.5ppg in 85-86 and 22.0ppg during their 86-87 title season and left IU as their all time leading scorer. And Daryl Thomas was their 2nd leading scorer behind Alford. Pretty big losses.

      Wayne Smith Sutton dropped another turd in 86 when he lost to LSU in the Elite Eight. If UK had beat Villanova, I’m not sure they would have beat a Stacy King led Oklahoma in the elite 8. But, I agree, Ellis should have started over Lock

    • @rbryant100
      @rbryant100 4 года назад +1

      Erich Lippert I can’t find that game anywhere, but it seemed Rollie Massamino zoned UK most of the game. Sutton started three guards and nobody was really hitting. They had the Cats down by 12 or more at half and you had the feeling Villanova was in control

    • @erichlippert9097
      @erichlippert9097 4 года назад +1

      rbryant100 it still stings about that Villanova loss too. I mean this was the only year I can remember where Rollie and them did anything in the Tourney after their 85 miracle. It would come at our expense in the Tourney.
