He's another example of a man who got shafted by the NCAA for things not directly his fault! Coaches r just that! Yes they r responsible for their players, but like anyone, u can't babysit 24/7! Coaches pay way too much of a price often for the blatant stupidity of some student-athletes! Sutton's positives though far outweigh the negative
This was the most talented team Eddie Sutton ever coached. Lock, Chapman, Davender, Bennett, Madison, Ellis, and Eric Manual all 5 stars McDonalds AA- and I may be missing some.
Truly another great sports moment in Philadelphia sports history: March 24, 1988 - NCAA Sweet 16 Southeast Regional Semis - Villanova vs. Kentucky. OH MY!!!!
I vividly remember watching this game! My sophomore yr in HS! Birmingham was extremely kind to Rollie and the 'Cats! Almost identical to '85! Beat the Tar Holes that time and this win over Kentucky, which I loved because this team was given less of a chance than that Nova team had against UNC! That team was more experienced, but this club had an unshakable resolve! They then gave high powered Oklahoma a solid run for their money except for the last 5 minutes! This Nova squad much more of a Cinderella than '85! Plus, the '88 team had less NCAA tournament experience! But Rollie always seem to get his kids in the '80s playing their best basketball in March
Been so long, but I remember 88 was a huge letdown. Depth was an issue I think. Scoring, minus Rex, was by committee. Ellis should have had more pt during the reg season. Very tough regional of UK, Oklahoma, Louisville and an always dangerous Massamino coached Villanova
@@rbryant100 They had plenty of depth that year. Just had guys that didn't give consistent production. ie. Madison, Jenkins, and Ellis. Ellis got plenty of PT that year. Even started for a brief time but had issues with staying out of the Sutton dog house for multiple reasons.
@@bigsmootht Man, Madison was the one guy that just couldn’t piece it together. He had the build of a classic 80’s power forward. Just way too inconsistent
@@rbryant100 yes he never could and had all the talent in the world. He was a 4yr head scratcher along with Irving Thomas who looked like he didn’t know basketball. Then transferred to FSU and became a star.
Disappointing era. After 86, I thought Sutton would get UK to the Final Four. They got hammered by Ohio State in 87 then the 88 Nova upset. 1989 was a disaster with the investigation. Pitino went to work immediately in the fall of 1989 and built a powerhouse in the 1990s
Congrats on Coach Eddie Sutton finally being elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame today!
Long overdue if u ask me

And he is still one of the select few to take four different schools to the NCAA tournament! Along with those three Final Fours!

Those warmups for Villanova at the 1:29 Mark are pretty unique. Always liked this particular court design at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center.

@@bradlewis6514 wow!
The only "sucky" thing about this game was changing to the Duke game during their time out, not revieling the futility of Ferry at Semi-Finals!!!
Man the fix was in on this game. The whistles just weren't the same on both ends.
can u imagine if sutton won the title this year, and then got fired before the next season started?
This UK team was terribly coached that year, leron Ellis should've been playing that year and I think there was chemistry problems with this team

Lobb Rock was awful.
A few of those foul calls were atrocious.

@@bensawesomemixchannel7220 Chapman left after the 88 season. Sutton would go on and coach the 1988-89 team before getting fired
Rex Chapman, LOL.
