- One of many coaching gems from Bob Knight. UNLV came into this game with a record of 37-1, the #1 overall seed, and a run-and-gun style of play that had many picking the Rebels as title favorites. Everyone thought IU needed to slow the game down and play halfcourt ball to have a chance. Instead, Bob Knight decided to run with the Rebels...and boy was he right. One of the better Final Four games of the 1980's. Well worth a watch.

This final four just showed you what a great coach coach Knight was.
Masterpiece of coaching by Coach Knight. Not just his in game coaching.
But the discipline his team displayed while getting punched early was evident.
They never got rattled.
RIP Jerry Tarkanian, Armon Gilliam, and Daryl Thomas.
And Coach Knight
One of the few times someone beat those UNLV teams at their own game. Knight said that slowing the game down would be suicide because the Rebels could score 85 points no matter what the pace was. Even though Indiana didn't normally run, they had more scorers than UNLV and unshackled with the wide-open style of play they shot 62%.
9:00 Steve Eyl to the rescue in the Final Four ala Jim Thomas in '81.
Thanks for sharing. Epic game and so appreciate the movement and screens and hard nosed defense. Fond memories for sure. IU staff and all recruits should be watching this game film constantly. This is how the game is played.
J’adore cet genre d’émissions. NBC était that goat.
Merci pour l.upload.
Great game, probably one of the best of Knight's career. IU had an easier time with UNLV than they did with Syracuse two nights later.
michaeld5 Indiana won because the 3 point basket Keith Smart made against the Syracuse Orangemen was lucky, however Coach Knight and the Hoosiers won fairly.
@@maryhlad5277 it was a 2 point basket
@@aaronfisher207 yup and I wouldn't call it lucky either, Smart had his way with Syracuse the whole second half. That Syracuse team however, was a supremely talented College team.
Indiana Hoosiers were rocking the classic Adidas Conductors and Forum high tops 👍🔥 !
IU got great minutes from Joe Hillman and Steve Eyl.
Absolutely Hillman and Eyl played extremely well.
Based on what he said at the end of this game, I think Tark must have watched it again and changed his mind. In a book he wrote years later, he said his team played great in this game and just got beat anyway.
Definitely a great game
Unreal, playing up tempo, right into them! Knight turned em loose, knew they could never play the game in the 60’s. UNLV coming out late to 2nd half? How does that happen? UNLV got great games from Gilliam and Banks, still lost. What does that tell you?
Gilliam was a. Great player
Billy Packer in opening comments expected to see a contrast in styles. Instead Bob Knight had IU pushing the pace. Surprising UNLV and everyone.
Alford was the best player on the floor. Looks can be very deceiving. RIP to the GOAT.
Knight loved vs. Man. They played into their hands
Just when you think you've got 'em...the game got really tight at about the one-minute mark. 1:33:31 Over the next thirty seconds of gametime, UNLV had several chances to really make IU squirm.
IU played a hell of a game here, happy for the win! I think we have a real chance against Syracuse, tough team, we have our work cut out for us. Lets go IU!
The odd late return of UNLV at halftime didn't hurt them. Indiana committed the first four turnovers after play resumed, while UNLV rallied to take the lead 61-59 in the first five minutes of the second half after IU had led 53-47 at the half.
Bob Knight and Jerry Tarkanian.
*College Basketball and Basketball HOF*
To think us hardcore IU fans from that era would, as of this date, not see a 6th banner hanged from the rafters at Assembly Hall.. It would seemed impossible to of not.
When Bob Knight us giving his postgame interview with Musburger and Packer off camera you hear him telling someone to go get his son Pat. I just wonder if Pat ever seen that clip and in light of His dads passing recently I think he would appreciate it.
This year: Imagine a College Basketball tournament in March without Duke, Indiana and Kentucky. This was a good game. I miss Billy Packer
When men played basketball in shorts, not pajamas.
Got one of my point guards watching your game !
great call on Gilliam over Garrett's back
I know who wins this game. So why am I still nervous?
Lol. Me too
Knight knew he couldn't let UNLV dig in defensively. They guarded you fullcourt M2M the moment your team stepped off the bus.
Freddie banks I thought he would be a great pro player
A young master takes it all in 1:39:36
How come the score isn’t displayed? I can’t follow the game at all without the score
Sure you can
Musberger appears very much younger than Packer here.
Back when the rules were actually enforced in basketball.
sloppy game in many respects just like Indiana vs. LSU in the previous game. But Keith Smart was really key at a variety of yo-man tasks... just really wirey and good.
and smart
Coach Bobby used to get on Daryl Thomas behind
Man UNLV couldn't shoot from outside at least not on this night.
It was rare
Freddie Banks hit Ten 3 Pointers.
"Great story out here" 53:52 "As we all know, Daryl Thomas is normally a starter." It's notable that Musburger assumes the audience knows that Thomas is a starter for IU. It's a small reminder of just how big IU basketball was at the time, and in particular how much attention this team was receiving in the wake of "Season on the Brink." The explosive book had come out just as the season was beginning, and Knight and the program were under the spotlight as never before. In retrospect, "Brink" served to tip the scales against Knight, but this particular group of players responded remarkably well to the pressure of competing at the highest level, just as Knight had trained them to do.
Thomas STARTED THE GAME. It had zero to do with media coverage for Indiana.
What u know bout the Real Runnin Rebs Draftmatic!
IU v lei 1987
Watching all these years later, it’s amazing just how terrible the officiating was.
It really hasn’t improved much compared to then.
10x better than what it is today. At least officials then called traveling and cheap shots lol
This may have been Knight's best coached game!UNLV would have smoked IU in a pick up game probably, but Knight totally surprised everyone by going head to head with the pace of the game! He definitely outcoached Tark,!!!!I'm a longtime Hoosier fan and I remember that final 4and I honestly thought that Knight had at least 1-2 championships left,so this video makes me a bit sad...RIP Coach Knight and Daryl Thomas!
I bet even God was rooting for Indiana!
"That's a foul that Hillman does not make." Borderline(?) racist remark from Packer at 1:35:16 Yes, this was a bad foul, but Keith Smart was not known for making stupid plays....Note the gentle encouragement from one of the assistant coaches (presumably after Knight had chewed out Smart a little) as if to say, "Keith, we got another game to play Monday night." Smart would prove to be more than ready.
Huh
Coach was not a Xs and Os Guy more like tough Defense will turn into good offense
Mark wade is the difference between winning a championship and coming up short.A wasted roster spot . UNLV really had 4 players vs Indiana 5.Unlv 89-90 team had hunt and Anthony two legit players.iHaving a none offensive wade on the floor cost UNLV the championship !
Yeah he went 1 for 6 scoring 4 points
UNLV getting hosed by the officials once again; Tarkanian had the best team in 1977 and 1987 and both times (against North Carolina and Indiana) the NCAA made sure that Vegas lost...Knight didn't do a "great coaching job", those endless moving screens by Daryl Thomas which were never called were much more effective. Evidence of the hatchet job was Steve Alford's un-athletic self shooting 11 free throws against a much-better coached and talented team... Freddie Banks went 10-19 from three-point range, Armon Gilliam had 32 and 10, and Mark Wade had 18 assists and the team only 9 turnovers yet they lost. I mean seriously, Dean Garrett? Daryl Thomas? Gilliam was better than Indiana's entire front line LOL But its okay, Knight was allowed to pound on the table while LSU was outplaying the Hoosiers and getting screwed as well, so why not in the National Semi-Final? Complete joke...
The Hoosier's ran the running Rebels out of the gym.
The Hoosier's shot 62% and UNLV 42%. They didn't get hosed...they got beat.
John Jaros and IU still smoked them
It must have been the coaching.
A little salty are we? The officiating was tightly called both ways. The third foul on D Thomas was complete garbage. Indiana shot the ball better and were better coached period.
And for all of you so enamored with Knight's "coaching job", for the six games in the tournament Indiana outshot their opponents 144-80 at the free throw line with a very un-athletic lineup (for those of you mathematically challenged that's an average of 10.67 more free throw attempts per game against the likes of UNLV, Duke and Syracuse LOL). Knight had the entire NCAA intimidated back then, which was a shame because his teams sucked and it was a snoozefest watching their boring brand of basketball...
They shot more FT's because of positioning and ball movement, which got the opposing defense out of position, so they resorted to fouling to make up for it. Yes, inferior athletes, but well coached, smart, basketball players, who payed attention to the details and won.
It's called "playing defense without fouling". A novel concept.
You won't get any arguments from Dale Brown about Knight's intimidation.
@@moochercat Not worth arguing with John Jaros, who is apparently a basketball neophyte. Wonder what he thought of Duke beating UNLV in 1991?? ha ha
