@@raulcepeda6 hE`s real say this
If you really think about it, Jason saved Metallica twice. Once by joining, at their darkest point and once by leaving them, forcing them to face their darkness.
I agree! I've always thought the same way.
you're just copying what jason said in that interview from 2020. try harder.
@@rat_king2801 I didn't know that. But okay. Now go jerkoff into your jerkoff sock.
@@rat_king2801, it's true.
@@StarfieldRailway yea it is but does every comment section have to be filled with tired copy/paste bs?
Consider no internet help to get the tabs, isolated tracks, tips, and so on.
And the fact they set up the audition very soon after the bus crash.
Jason was very on focus. Impressive
Matteo Rambelli Jason actually studied and learnt an entire Metallica set list also
I learned the whole album (master)
by ear, ( back in the old with a record and turntable) I'm sure he didn't have too much of a problem. Not saying it's easy, but after you attain a certain level, it takes work, and Newstead has never been afraid of challenging himself, he probably knew a big chunk of their set or was extremely familiar with it
Well, I think that back in the day there was magazines..., and the oficiall transcriptions in the LP.
Never heard "isolated tracks"?
PacoDelFun88 Do you think he had access to them before the audition?
Robert has really good skills, but Jason was the second frontman , his vocals and his energy were simply amazing in the concerts...
not to mention Cliff nor ROb have could of pulled off the 2000 Sparta show
I know that James and Kirk was tired of his Metallica "fanboy." That was a big mistake because is being a "fan boy" gave him more determination to lay down the best work he could, including backing and sometimes lead vocal duties!
Yes, he really knew how to head bang, saw him in Metallica a few times, but on the Damage Justice tour ´88, he was wild and rocked like hell. Think he was pretty good in Metallica, even though no one can compete with the great Cliff.
@@larsnilsson8949 Different people, different times; comparing apples to oranges. Their performances were different and there is no sensibility in imagining them battle each other. It might sound fun but is nonsensical.
@@ltrzepalko "...battle each other." Of course not! I agree with you, completely different performances and times, I only wanted to point out that Cliff was the right bass player, before he sadely passed away. He was the person that held the band together and was the foundation for their sound and musically direction. But, yes you are totally right, agree with you!
Damn this dude wanted the job
But Lars pranked him with ...And Justice for All.
Saludos amigo
He quit an absolutely killer band he was a co-founder of to join
He was a Cliff fan and always want to be in MetallicA
Adam Youdell ..to be in the worlds biggest band. Not a hard decision
he deserved the job
This guy really did random bass fills on first time playing with metallica what a confident guy 15:43
I didn't hear any random bass fills until the second audition... and those are all older songs that any thrash dude of the time would have played a HEAP. not to take away from him - they're great fills - but there aren't any in MOP or Battery, he's mostly following the guitars
@@turnerjmulletboy On master of puppets he did do many fills.
Zleek I definitely agree, having played it on bass based on original I can easily say jason adds a lot to it
Definitely heard a couple on puppets.
I've heard a few on master of puppets so far
@1:17 Dude is locked in on Lars like a missile, which isn't an easy thing to do. They found a guy they couldn't outplay. Keeping up with a drunk and pissed off 1986 Hetfield playing "Fight fire with fire" is like the final metal bass god boss battle.
walking metronome
James might have been wastef but he still was the time keeper for Lars
I noticed that throughout this audition. Lars even back then gets a bit...liberal with the rhythm/tempo. And yet there's Jason still in the pocket with him regardless! As a bass player myself I know that's a difficult place to be.
@@ShadowEl That's right, it seems to me that he had analyzed Lars way of playing live, and had learned the parts of the songs where he uses to rush or drag... It's almost always in the same sections.

SHOT THE FOCK OP!
You can tell Jason practiced his ass off for this audition. His playing is so on point! 19:36 is a great bass moment.
Jason is definitely the most undervalued member of Metallica history. His energy and stage presence massively helped them to become an arena/stadium band. The band were also at their tightest musically with him in the band.......and he wrote the riff to Blackened!,
He ain't undervalued. Everybody says that, which definitely doesn't make him underrated
I was surprised on the black album tour with his Mohawk. He ended up being my favourite.
Everyone loves Jason man, he isn’t underrated.
I honestly see more people say mean spirited thing about Rob than Jason nowadays. Lol
@@theof4455 Bro, it's been a long time coming for people to realize this. Just because you see it a lot now doesn't mean it was anything close to common knowledge when he was still around or shortly after he left.
Everything is super fast. It's like they were testing him to see if he could keep up. He did.
LOL I guess they hadn't heard Doomsday For The Deceiver from flotsam/and Jetsam. His playing on that demolishes anything he ever did with Metallica. METAL SHOCK!!! \m/
Or maybe Lars sucks balls as a timekeeper
ItsTimeIDisappear09 I mean it makes sense they play fast to make sure he can keep up
They’re probably just drunk
Artists actually play faster live because of adrenaline and exhaustion.
At least we can hear the bass in the audition ....
Jason 4 ever
You can actually feel how hungry to get the gig Jason was... GOOSEBUMPS
true
Ded Zeppelin - So true. Justice was TERRIBLE. All kick drum.
allways so difficult to mix the bass
SixSentSoldiers justice was far from terrible. just because you can hardly here any bass at all doesnt mean its terrible
This audition is truly mind blowing, for so many reasons. First lets look at the fact that about a week or so before They tragically lost Cliff in the bus accident. And when most people thought they should quit and even told them they should quit to honor Cliff's memory they said fuck that noise. That is not what Cliff would want. Now beyond that Jason said in interviews that these guys weren't only drinking but they were drinking pretty heavily for weeks on end. And he said auditions were getting brutal. One guy flew all the way from the East coast out to California and he went in and plugged in and played like one riff and James unplugged him and said get out your done here. Wow that's vicious. Jason Also said he got there early so he could hear the competition. Well after seeing how much they were basically taking their shit out on people he was thinking all day wow I got no fuckin chance. So this is at the end of the day so you know they were all pretty lit. And sure you can hear it in James voice. But omg can they play when they're drunk. I think they're even better. And as someone else said it sounds they're purposely playing faster than usual just test Jason. And so look at this through his eyes. He's already thinking he doesn't stand a chance. Then they speed shit up on him. And how's does he handle it? In the true beast way that is Jason Newsted he fuckin kills it. And gets invited backfor a second audition. Truly amazing. Damn I miss him
It wasn't a week later
He was probably the most sane and down to earth member of the band.
Too bad Jason wouldn't hear his bass on a recording for another 5 years!
Garage Days?
Yup. Garage days and the bass swells during "to live is to die"
xD
dude...5 years later was 1991 and of course you could hear him then
jables3377 neither would we😂😂😂
Jason played his absolute balls off in these auditions.
He always played his balls off.
He never stopped
Jason fucking Newsted is a tank my man
Jason Newsted is a hero to me, I name one of my sons after him.
Big Mick always took care of Jason in the live mix. Every concert I saw with Jason he was loud and very audible.
And stole the show every time I saw him
Yeah, I've seen them 23+ times. 6 or 7 times each on AJFA, and the Black tour. They toured the hell out of those albums. Jason was a huge part of show. Chanting Die for Infinity, during Creeping Death.
Big Mick is a hero!
@@56Century Yup - Jason always stole the show!
16:46 Jesus Christ on a bicycle Jason that fill was NASTY AS FUCK 🥵
This is a serious piece of Metallica history right here
Is there any wonder WHY Jason got the gig? He was goddamn ferocious in his audition, even when he hit a wrong note, you will hear him adjust. He wasn't intimidated in the least playing with those other three and that came across in his playing, that was not the sound of a guy who "kinda" knows your material and is struggling to get through it, that was a confident motherfucker thrashing out! Jason even added a lot of Geezer embellishments/runs in there (which I love) on Master and Seek.
They were lucky to have gotten such a thrashy metal motherfucker in Newsted!
murilo ninj he sounds phenomenal, he was perfect for them and I still don’t feel the band has been the same since he left
Adrian Davies Same
No they haven't but even when Newsted was still around he couldn't light the fire under the others asses. James was a drunk asshole who phoned it in vocally, they gave no fucks about their guitar tone, Lars was well Lars and that douche is hopeless.
He got out at the right time, Rob is nothing more than a place marker and has shit for stage presence and energy, he doesn't have a thrash bone in his body. They sound tolerable live and are a legacy act touring randomly around. Sad But True!!!
He even admitted to being intimidated by the audition. But I guess you would know more than him. To quote him "I was shaking in my boots".
Listen to his playing you goof! Does that sound like someone shitting themselves? I am sure he was, who wouldn't be BUT when it was time to play, he was in there and killing it!
As a long time bass player, this audition by Jason is phenomenal. In time, knows the parts spot on, even improvising on Cliff's parts and playing some of the guitar riffs.
18:51 I love that groovy bass riff for Creeping Death
I'm huge Cliff fan, but this audition really impressed me. Jason dares to improvise and his vibe on songs is also really nice. Too bad that James and Lars didn't appreciated the gift. It's like to have Michael Schumacher in your team and let him to drive the pizza delivery card. I really wonder how would Metallica sound if Jason was given freedom to participate in songs.
… they did appreciate it!
I give Jason credit. He never beaked about the other guys until he was out of Metallica even though they treated him like complete dogshit. He made his money, had enough of the B.S and moved on. 15 years into it and the guy was still basically I hired gun. Told what to play and how to play it.
@@nkovenes2018 Tecnicamente Jason tocaba mucho mejor.

It's not underrated. He was Metallica heart live. Metallica shoot themselfs in the foot for not fighting for him to stay. I'm not dishing Robert, he is an amazing bass player, but he is NOT fitted for Metallica.
Who underrates him? Every real Metallica fan rates him very highly and he often is ones favorite member. Lol wtf.

That's because the other guys are crushed by Cliff's death. Cliff died September 27th and they asked Jason to join the band October 10th.

it’s really sad to hear the pain in James’s voice
Luchiini ouch.
Just because his voice sounds like crap here?
marcel braga No I think he’s referring to the fact that they were still grieving Cliff’s death at that moment in time
@@christianenriquez1603 I'm aware of that, but I guess he's just not wasting any energy, vocally speaking, for a bass audition. And he sounds like shit due to that fact. As a musician I'd be focused on hearing the new guy. I don't think he's thinking about Cliff the whole audition.
marcel braga that makes more sense it’s similar to his voice on their demos
This is the loudest Metallica has ever allowed the bass to played lol. Guess they allowed it only to see if he could play the songs. Once they found out it was back to being near silent for the remainder of his time with them. Sad. He’s a badass bass player.
You can hear ron mcgovney's bass pretty well on the early demo tapes
Cory Mize garage day 5.98 EP has great bass
Cory Mize you can hear bass well on Garage Days, Black album has bass and the Load albums are full of bass

Shawn Huff this is the real video because it came out with the MOP Remaster
creeping death has such a funky bass line, that i've never known for 30 years :S
Correction: the way Jason plays it is funky. Cliff's actual bass line is very different. Just look up "Creeping Death Bass Only", and a few videos featuring the isolated bass track will show up. Same with all the other songs here. Jason didn't play the bass lines like Cliff AT ALL. He put his own flair into them (I still prefer Cliff's original ones).

K W Why you so mad on a comment that isn't even yours???????????????????
Genuinely brilliant bass play in this. Jesus, he rocked. What a pro.
Man, what a BADASS!!! It’s a shame his playing never got the space it deserved in the final mixes.
In this picture James can't decide whether to be 1986 James or 1988 james
So he decided to be 87 James :P
This pick is from 1987
It’s always seemed to me that James apparently did not hit puberty until ‘87. Vocals really changed and he finally grew facial hair
You can tell they’re trying to push him to try and keep up with them but he literally does a bang on job. His picking technique is absolutely monstrous and beastly. He was definitely the right bassist for them for that time. It’s hard to compare Jason and Cliff because they were different in their approaches to bass and Cliff had all that compositional experience and had to get round all them 16th notes with his fingers which Jason absolutely had no problem with using a pick. I’d say Jason’s playing definitely enabled them to go faster and more aggressive. Not to mention Jason’s tone suited Metallica more by sitting more in the mid range compared to Cliffs that sat more in the lower end and didn’t have as much clarity. It’s interesting that Jason didn’t play Cliffs basslines exactly and put his own fills and spins on them which again, I think suited Metallica better at that time. All in all though Metallica wouldn’t be where they are today without Cliff with his shredding and compositional abilities
Jason was a great songwriter too. He wrote those Flotsam and Jetsam albums were he was on.
Disagree there. Cliff's tone was dictated by the mix not his playing style. Kill'em All is a great example, there is no problem hearing Cliff on that album, in fact his playing drives most of the songs. Cliff had no problems playing 16th notes with his fingers, you can hear it on many songs. Cliff understood the role of the bass and made his parts to add the foundation to the songs not necessarily mimic the guitars. This added another dimension to their sound which Jason never really accomplished.
@@TheChenny73 100% agree. Especially if you listen to fight fire with fire for example with just cliffs track, he doesnt have trouble. People need to chill with Jason being held as superior due to his "ability to play fast", when in Cliff never had issues with speed.
@@TheChenny73 not exactly.bass in kil em all is really low and hard to hear most of the time
@@TheChenny73 a lot of his tone came from his Rik he would play. he had a distinctive tone and range with the distortion he used as well.
WOW. Just WOW. This proves how great Jason was and that he fully deserved the job. You can hear chemistry. BIG TIME. Loving that pick sound. Also bassists will notice that Jason does not follow Cliff entirely but rather James' guitar. This is audible in the spider riff in the intro E F (B C C#) - the power of pick. Wish James and Lars could give him more freedom, they had enough money...
How could they not pick him?!? He fucking nailed this audition, and this is his very first time playing with the band!
I can only imagine how nervous he had to be
I heard two slip ups at best in this whole audition and they were easy parts to play he was driven more than nervous. He was amazing better than cliff in my opinion and that's no shade on cliff he was my favorite of all time since I was a teen but Jason was just more skilled
@@mikehunt8247 Jason was good but Cliff was better. He played all those songs fingerstyle which requires more skill than playing them with a pick.
@@russkate88 I don't think fingers or pick have fuck all to do with skill. More so preference. Your hands get sore from playing either way. And to be fair cliff wasn't playing as fast as jason was. Cliff was the whole reason I picked up a bass. And like I said he's my favorite of all time but in my opinion jason was the better bass player he could do everything cliff could and then some
@@russkate88 Not true. Each form of picking has its own challenges. I do both. Love both. Try playing very precise, fast, and clean with a pick. Your fuckin thumb muscles will get huge and fatigue will be felt there. Finger style it is the pronated side of your forearm after time. My old bass play played both ways with lots of skill. He would try both for each song and chose what fit the song. Fingers and pick are both were it is at if you let them be. Expand your mind.

What a great bass player Newsted was. Epic playing!!!
hakanimre and killer tone too! Love that bass tone
hakanimre I think he's actually the best out of all three.

We miss you Jason!
Jason’s playing is so tight that feels like he is just the only one who is in good status at least instrumentally. His every note is pairing with Lars’s drum also keeping the groove and the riff at the same time, omg it was impressed. Without him the band would be so loose on sound… maybe mentally too.
Jason's loud strumming is and always impressing it just gives the full rhythm and thickness of any song.
Damn, James and Lars really hid Jason away from us for the 15 years he was in the band. Such a shame had they led him contribute. He was hungry for that position.
Jason is a Trash Monster. If his bass had of been turned up on And Justice for All, it would have been an even more crushing album. Its a shame that the albums he did record with Metallica, after AJFA, were not all that heavy. I would have liked to have heard a heavy trash Metallica song with Jason's bass audible. Jason is also a beast of a vocalist.
Christopher L. I think it’s funny how Metallica went from screw the system on AJFA with the fact it was more independent, heavier, and it’s lyrical content to becoming the system with Bob Rock and the release of the Black Album and the albums afterwards.
Do a search for (and justice for jason) enjoy \m/
You don't think "Sad but True" is Heavy? Jason's bass is all over it with Heavy
Mindrex absolutely Sad But True is heavy. Was speaking more about Trash.
Trash? Don't you mean Thrash?
I like how Lars and James have little empty spots so they could listen back later and see if Jason was on point. He nailed this
Pretty incredible historical document. Jason was indeed the right guy. One had to have major balls just to walk in that room at that point in time.
26:33 is the most nerve wrecking part if I were Jason. Kirk and James just stop playing after the harmony to listen to Jason play the riff. On one of the more challenging songs at that...
Nope, just standard break in song... more or less... kurt is slamming thor the riff... just the audio cuts
Jason's playing is fantastic, incredible! That's an audition? Sounds like lead bass.
This is real bass guitar playing. Precise, powerful without compromise.
I saw. I thrashed. I won - Jason Newsted
I saw, I thrashed, I LEFT THE FOCKING BAND

Jason must've put in so much time before this audition, because he absolutely NAILED everything. Super impressive, especially considering that the other 3 were obviously playing super fast and really pushing him hard. I love how bass forward the mix is on this. Wish they had done this more.
This is really awesome to hear. A moment that went down in metal history. Jason kept up with playing different tempos because they were going really fast and then slower again. I think that’s how they tested him and he went with it flawlessly. That’s why he got the gig in my opinion.
Jason is the GOAT, having the balls to step into Metallica with all the emotional turmoil they were going through, enduring all the “punishment” from unresolved issues by the band, being the backbone and then having the balls to walk away from what many would consider a dream job to follow his dreams. If that is not a hero’s journey I don’t know what it. But major respect to Jason Newsted, he has been more inspirational with his actions than many would believe.
🤘🔥🤘
21:05 love this part of the song!
In all the songs, the bass can be heard very well.
It’s funny how Jason is the only one that sounds clean and on point on this tape
They all sound solid here and there were parts in Creeping Death where Jason is off.
@@russkate88 Jason sounds great on Creeping Death. He's adding these progressions that weren't on the record.
It makes sense since he is the only one who has to perform well
Think of all the hazing he got in the early days, took it like a champ made his money then got out.
I honestly think he got the last laugh over James and particularly Lars simply by leaving. To them leaving the band would be unthinkable and sacrilege.
Lars face when he shouted “he Fucking left the band”, he was almost crying.
He smashed it ... always liked Jason
