*For anyone wondering what's wrong with the sound:* the mics have "noise gates" on'em, which means they turn off as the sound falls below certain level in dB (e.g. the voice of a singer). You can hear the crowd noise quite well, when they talk and then the volume drops. This is done for cleaner live sound, so that no sound of everything going on getting to the mic gets into PA system (thus loops out to mic and PA back again, creating awful feedback) when there's no vocals. The bass is just a "direct sound", which means it was recorded directly from guitar, passing over the amp. That's why it sounds bad also (no sustain, "flat" frequencies picture). The signal is split - one way goes to PA with speaker cabinet and mic (probably also having a gate), the other - directly to the mixing desk ecording console. In this instance we got the latter. No secret for a sound guy here.
@@PaulKretz I’m confused admittedly. You mentioned we just got the bass directly, ni amp/speaker cab, just the signal + effects. You mentioned the signal was split to get there, the other half going to the PA from the microphones in front of the cabinets. Am I following correctly?
@@pat8437 That's right. I mean here, in this video, we only hear the direct part of the "splitted" signal. The other half was most probably routed to the FX-PREAMP-AMP-CAB-MIC-MIX-PA for the audience to get great sounding bass. BUT, that signal from the miked cab can also be routed back to the mixing deck for recording. In metal music direct and amp bass tracks are quite often mixed together in different proportions to get really tight sound (both live and on record). Having two tracks there can also be parallel compression going, distortion over DI track and other effects... Sound engineering and mixing hides a lot of tricks 🤘😎

I think Jason was great in Flotsam and Jetsam. In Metallica, it seems like the other guys just had him play what they wanted and he wasn’t ever really as involved in the creativity part of writing as in Flots. When Jason left Flots, Flots’s sound changed too.

this video and part of the concert inspired and influenced me to start playing bass. i watched it first time about 20 years ago. everything about jason, his bass, tone, playing style, attitude etc.. him and billy gould from faith no more are my 2 favorite bass players.
plays the star spangled banner in mexico ftw
Doppey Smouker WHAAAT
Matt CFH they're an American band why not
Lars brings his fucking danish flag everywere and we dn´t give a fuck, plus latinos go yelling patriotic shouts every fucking place they go
Antonio Centeno lol truth
Cliff played it during his solo on multiple dates of their last tour with him. :) And that was Europe
I liked Jason most of Metallica back in 90's :) Still think he never should've been out...
They gave him no choice. He'd have been fired had he not quit.
Genio Jason! De mis bajistas favoritos! Toco N.I.B en una parte! Otro temazo!
Hey James, Lars and Kirk ..Bring back Jason to you all
Black Sabbath Ftw
Which sabbath's song is it? I can't find it.
ScMarianek 5:08 Black Sabbath 'NIB'
Hindsight is 20/20. This is a bad MF’er who clearly fit the band. So disappointing he didn’t get his props.
Wow the bass is audible! 😮
5:55 jason start to use usa song in a mexican concert jaja
jaja es cierto crack saludos desde tucasa xdxdxd
@@LuisGomez-vt6yi te estoy buscando tengo miedo

Doppey Smouker shd
I always thought he was the best PURE musician in that band
Metallica will never be as great again and newsted is the best metal band in the world
i went in the 99 to the metallica concert with sepultura and was almoust like being there again with that bass sounds i really enjoy it
Jason is better than Robert in my opinion. I think he's a more aggressive bass player, better bass solos, kickass vocals, and outstanding distortion. Sure Robert is pretty damn fast but put anything else that Robert has next to Jason, Jason's going to win.
I wouldn't call covering a multitude of songs a good "solo".
Well either way the style of Jasons playing in some songs is better than robs. Creeping death, bells, etc, and also vocals. Kick tremendous ass
American Bassist I love Jasonic. I think his last Newsted CD was amazing. But Robert is also great too. just miss Jason.
No
I miss Jason’s backing vocals a lot.
I LOVE YOU JASON NEWSTED GROUP TURN BACK
I think Jason was great in Flotsam and Jetsam. In Metallica, it seems like the other guys just had him play what they wanted and he wasn’t ever really as involved in the creativity part of writing as in Flots. When Jason left Flots, Flots’s sound changed too.
Kenny Barnett h
Not really.
When Jason plays the USA anthem better than Kirk and James
and when he did it in Mexico City
i was there!!!! thanks for this!!
What's spectacular is how raw this recording is!
This is so fucking entertaining...
Beautiful melody man...that's how you touch a metalhead's heart
Jason was So underutilized by the rest of Metallica. If they would have released him instead of repressing him, I could only imagine what energy their music would have had. IMO James feared Jason's potential. Miss you Jason
Life long Metallica fan

jeremy miller Jason was very instrumental in Load and Reload. They didn’t only ever haze him ya know. He became a serious creative force in his last two albums with the band. At the request of James and Lars.
One of the best of Jason’s
Love Jason, never really thought Rob fitted in
The best of the best bassist for Metallica
I have a lot of respect for both Cliff and Rob and think they are both great bass players but Metallica were at their peak when Jason was with them.
Don't forget it.
I hear some of the day that never comes there at the end of the first part . Loved the whole video
5:33 Metalshock by Jason's previous band Flotsam and Jetsam!!
Thanx JN for the blackened main riff, one of best Metallica riffs👌
And justice for all.
I agree with all the points of view mentioned here
love this Solo by Jason !!!
I had no idea that Jason had cut his hair by early 1993. I always thought it was later than that.
He played "Born Under a Bad Sign" at a metal concert. God bless you, sir.
Cliff: better bassist, amazing composer
Jason: best performer, more energetic unique style
Rob: he exists i guess
when jason goes up to the mic my heart goes 💕💕💕💕
*Jason "bass" Newsted*
🤘🤷♂️🤘
Thanks for the upload.Nice to hear Jason acknowledging his past at 5.35 with his solo from 'Metalshock' From F&J's album 'Doomsday for the Deceiver'. He was amazing back then in 1985/'86 and still is. Just type in Flotsam and Jetsam 1986 to see what I mean. Knowing your Metal History helps!
I have a lot of respect for Jason as a bass player, and I love his playing on Metallica records (and of course F&J!) but honestly this solo doesn't do much for me.

Bass + wah?
Yes. Has been around since the 60s.
cliff did it, too.
Arnaud Borne Jason Hammett
Arnaud Borne different things for different people I suppose
michael anthony does too.
Love the camera work at end. looks awesome.
Jason's wah sounds like that song that plays while you're fighting Glados in Portal.
Miss Jason ,wish he was back.love ya man.
I’ve never once gotten the chills from this mans bass solos like I do cliffs..... i just don’t FEEL the music like I do with cliff
Thats because he wasnt at the same level as Cliff or others. He is not a bad musician, but not a exceptional bassist to make a good solo. In this video, he plays just random stuff😡
Jason has a talent and energy. And still have.
Jason is the new Lemmy 🤘🏻
I really love the first part of his playing. Now i finally noticed it‘s „Born under a Bad sign“ by Albert King. 🤦🏻♂️
james was nothing but bully to Jason.
They're grown men. Grown men don't get bullied unless they like it for sexual reasons. It's not the same thing like in junior high school.
LSweet2007 Hetfield and Hammett bullied Jason Newstead for years.. End of
quacka 1003 *ulrich
quacka 1003 yeah Kirk is such a bully you fuck
LSweet2007 I’m pretty sure he got hazed pretty intensely by James and Lars.
Nice job from Skaneateles, NY . Do AR 15 piece. Hope to see u in Skaneateles this summer for a violin jam. Love the wa wa. Smart.
Джейсон красавчик!
The Man, the Myth the Legend.
Jason plays the star spangled banner in Mexico lol
Man I'm missing this man :(
