Actually the best time to drink coffee IS around the time you finish your lunch. Once your body is on a decline the coffee helps give you that push and then once the food is truly being digested (after that 20-40 min time frame) you'll start to have that energy (unless you ate something that just slugs you). Having said this, there are so many awesome combinations of lenses that are great propositions. My priority has been (1) relatively fast, (2) strong value / price to performance, (3) smallish, cover a pretty full range of focal lengths.
My criteria eliminated the f1.2 primes and PL 10-25mm and 25-50mm zooms but I recognise these are the lenses to get if quality is the priority.

The PL 12-60 f2.8-40 is def one of my favourites. Definitely the best kit lens you can get imo.
If Vazen sends you the anamorphics, can I borrow them after you’re done with them? 😂

Currently looking at budget TTArtisans and 7Artisans line ups for fun.
I have used a few of each of their lenses and they both do decent work! Although the Mitakon Lenses have a special place in my heart for the F.95 and T1.0 Lenses.
I would put the 75mm 1.8 in S. The lens is super sharp, its fast and no competitor.
Yes, and at one point, the 75mm was the sharpest lens tested at dxo

Hi Rhett, I love the tierlist you made and the M43 videos you produce. I started videography a few months ago and am in love with the craft. I bought a GH6 with the 10-25mm f/1.7 as my first ever lens. Now, I'm looking for a supplementary lens with extra range for event photography (stand-up comedy shows, meet-ups in dim-lit cafes) and videography (informative cinematic travel videos of cities). Do you have any advice what lens would be best to get?
I am doubting between the 25-50mm f/1.7 and the 35-100mm f/2.8. The first one since it is sort of a twin to the lens I already have, has multiple aperture levels, matches the imaging of my owned lens perfectly, and great for videography. The second for the extra range and Dual IS. The range of the first one concerns me when I want to capture people from a longer distance or make close-up shots of architecture details.
Looking forward to an answer and some user experiences. Thank you so much in advance! 🙏
Congrats and welcome to the system! Personally I think the 25-50 is a little short for your needs, as in events that classic 70-200 look is definitely a standard for a reason. I’d you do weddings or events 35-100. If you do interviews and corporate I think the 25-50 is best.

My experience is that the 8-25mm is the more useful lens when compared to both the 8-18mm and 7-14mm.
7-14mm too bulky and heavy. Front element, filters, flare and barrel distortion, etc.
Only downside when compared to the 8-18mm is lack of 2.8 aperature at wide end. But the focus clutch, long end being 25mm, build quality and semi-macro. Make it more of do everything lens.
I also have the 9mm 1.7 so don't miss the low light.
In many ways, It is the ultrawide brother of the 12-100mm (albeit without lens-is but for these focal lengths doesnt add that much if ibis is up to par).

I really wish I could get my hands on some Olympus lenses. I would be thrilled to take that 8-25 on a trip somewhere but alas I don’t need it personally (or so I?)
I’d also love to try the 8-18 or 9mm but I’ve had the Laowa for a long time and that does the job for me.
If I sold it though maybe I could justify one of these others…
1. Entertaining tier list. I'm just a hobbyist/budget-level Panny G95 owner and shoot quite a bit more stills than video (but still a fair bit of video) but still found this a fun video. I've got such a small fraction of these lenses (mostly in your D and C tiers) and I'll likely never be in the market for many of the exotic lenses. Nonetheless, this video reminds me of the incredible richness and diversity of choice in m43 system. And this video, of course, is just native glass - if you consider adapted lenses, well, it'd be a 3 or 4 hour video, right?
2. I know I don't have the highest standards, but as someone who's shot digital for over 20 years, it absolutely blows my mind how good the IQ and video quality you can get from entry level kit (and phones even!) these days -- heck, even over the last few years. Yes, there are still things that frustrate us at times and we always want to see better, but honestly, we really have it so, so good.
3. I'll be curious to see if the imminent introduction of a Panny phase-detect equipped G/GH model influences renewed interest in the format. Of course Oly has had it for years, but never had the same video feature set (even in the OM-1) as Panasonic. I'm definitely rooting for it, even if it takes me a few years before the G9m2s/G6m2s/GH5m3 approach my personal level of willingness to pay.

Honestly even lenses in C I think are great and often offer something very unique! Mostly it’s the build quality or handling that suffers more than the actual optics. Sharpness and all that is kinda overrated imo haha. Most MFT lenses are made to a pretty high standard all things considered!
I think since you touched on some cine lenses that Veydra and Meike lenses should have been included. Although they have similar optics, there's enough differences to separate them.

The 12-100mm f/4 pro is my fall-time favorite lens. If the 40-150 f/2.8 pro had IS, it'd be a tough decision.
It's a nice video and I mostly agree with your lens assessment. That said I was surprised to hear your praise of the closeup ability of the Leica 25-50. I have the lens and I felt compelled to go check again whether it is indeed great for closeups. It's not that great. Going through the entire zoom range with the focusing clutch ring set to closest focus, the smallest object I could capture along the wide side of the frame was 7.5cm across.
That's not bac, but the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 blows the Leica 25-50 out of the water in the closeup comparison. I don't have the 12-40 anymore as I replaced it with the Leica 10-25, but I recall the Olympus being able to fill the long side of the frame with objects that were about 5cm across or maybe smaller.
In the end it's not important how close you can shove a lens at an object, but the magnification you can achieve is what I think matters most.
We must be using different lenses with that assessment. In the 40-50mm range it has just about the closest focus and biggest reproduction of any lens I know of for micro four thirds. Blows the 35-100, Olympus 40-150, Olympus 12-100, Leica 42.5 and Olympus 45mm 1.8 and 1.2 well out of the water with typically double the reproduction. All those lenses are painfully far and usually have shorter focal lengths too. It’s not a macro by any means. The 12-40 specs say we’ve got a .3 magnification vs .21 so it is worse there but the aperture value is certainly something to consider too. I think the aperture is important to consider.

Hey Rhett…one of the more epic video I did watch..I agree mostly on All the lenses I tried curious jus where would you have put the adapted 18-35 sigma 1.8 which is a mythical légende in MFT.
Having the Mitakon ciné set,it is much more versatile that I was first thinking ,like you said when closing it to T2 I use the set all the time in multicam setup for interview the 50mm got incredible compression…
I love the pana 35-100 2.8 on gimbal with GH5s you got in live event concerts much more compact vs Canon 70-200 😂😂😂😂

I think the 18-35 is certainly an easy S tier even though it’s adapted, although 50-100 I’d say that’s A tier.
I do love the Mitakon set, do you have all four? I think I’ll have to review those soon.

I have the whole Mitakon set 17,25,35,50 I even open one to see how it looks and because of a loosened screw on the 50mm which did not affect the image but was annoying soundwise so the inside is a lot of plastik and I could access it pretty easy not Special tork a la Apple but I needed probably to open la chambre noir I don't know who it calls in English the focusing zone which was to scarry to try but anyway I put everything back together and it is working just fine.
T1-1.4 is with all lens pinkish dreaming ultra soft after it becomes better 1.4 color wise and that in pretty all models.
Sharp at T2.8 sharpiest at 5.6 quasi modern and in all my glasses.
What's cool and what I love is that when sweeping the lenses no need for expo or WB correction it pretty stays similar just the focal lens is changing it is good match for prosummer level of filming and I don t have the tools like Gerald Undone to make it scientifically correct.
But they are great lenses and even when I put one on GH5,5s and BMPCC4K so 4 different models it is pretty easy toatch them because they have the same something wibe probably.
Try them you will love the results...I don't know how it will act on pro set but for my usage they are great for artistic musical Videoclip even in classical music.

Interesting video. A lot of lenses/brands I have never heard about towards the end there.
To me the reason to get into MFT was the (potential) compact size of the lenses (as well as the camera bodies), which seem to be something you are not too worried about.
But isn't that a main reason to get into this system to begin with? (I think I have most of the "pancake" lenses from Lumix, i.e. the 14/2.5, 20/1.7 and 12-32/3.4-5.6) and they all fit into a small camera bag together with the Lunix GM5 and a 45-175 GX. Perfect for bringing on motorcycle trips.)
I do almost only photos, but are not Power Zooms an advantage for making videos? I have the 14-42 GX as well as the 45-175 GX, and these were thought of as a good option for making smooth video zooms. (I have not used this feature much, as I take mostly photos, but video using manual zoom really stinks in my opinion. How do you get around this)? I also notice that the power zoom can be used while remotely controlling the cameras via the mobile app, which may be a gimmick, but quite impressive still. I do not think this is a feature in any APC or FF system.

I do like the OPTION to have a small setup but as you correctly guessed its not really a top priority to me.
I do like the idea of the power zooms but they are fairly average lenses and the zoom options were less than stellar in practice. Maybe if they had a 14-150 power zoom or something it would be nice but the overall package just wasnt doing it for me honestly although I', sure theyre good for someone out there!
@@RhettThompsonFilm Thank you for replying. Just wonder if you ever zoom when recording video, and if so how do you avoid the "jearkiness" (unsmooth) behavior you (or at least I) get when zooming manually?
The 12-45mm is vastly better than the 12-40mm in my book. It's sharper than even the 12-100mm. Also it is actually significantly smaller than the 12-40 where it counts (it doesn't show so in images), which is width.
The Olympus 1.8 fisheye beluga lense can be be automatically "corrected" to be rectilinear in camera on some Olympus/OM models starting with the E-M1 II. Still photos only as far as I know.
That’s certainly helpful for Olympus shooters!! I didn’t realize that! I’m sure there’s some IQ loss but likely an acceptable trade off.
@@RhettThompsonFilm I have the E-M1 II but the 1.8 fisheye is out of my price range so I just got the Laowa 7.5mm, which is great for the band shooting that I do.
My favorite has been the Voigtlander 60mm. It's hard to replicate on other formats without being enormous. Even the Samyang EF 135mm f/2.0 is just about as wide and as heavy, but is twice the length.
Only thing that comes close I’ve seen is that Mitakon but that’s a modified full frame lens. The Voigtlander is MFT specific made
Hi Rhett, I agree with you almost 100%, but there are many lenses and I can't agree with all of them.
In my opinion the Olympus 12-45 f4 pro deserves class A, because it is simply too qualitative, it is sharper than the 12-40 2.8, the Lumix 12-35, the 12-100 and the Leica 12-60, it is much more cheap, small and light of all these... For this reason it deserves class A.
I tried the Olympus 300 f4 pro... it undoubtedly deserves the S class, it's too qualitative, a scary sharp image, the same goes for the Leica 200 mm f2.8, S class for it too... quality of image too higher than other prime numbers.
(but have you evaluated the Leica 25mm f 1.4 and the Olympus 20mm f1.4?)
Perhaps the Olympus 40-150 f2.8 pro could deserve another promotion, too much versatility, quality and usefulness all together (I think it is better than the 7-14 which in turn is better than the 12-40 :) )
Voigtlander super nokton 29.. f 0.8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please try it... I heard that even at f 0.8 it offers a usable image, it must be fantastic! a sure S! but we still can't be sure until you try it.

I have a Lumix 25mm f1.7. Got it used for £70 ($90). Best budget and beginner lens ever. Close up, it's super sharp, far out, you have to step it down because it's not exactly sharp on my 12MP GF2, and the chromatic aberration can be horrible. The bokeh is super good close up, and never do I regret buying it, a great introduction to professional photography. You can adjust aperture, and focus manually, and coming from a phone, that's a big deal. The thing about pretty much all other lenses on your tier list is that they really aren't affordable. I got my whole setup for under £150, and that was still expensive to me.
Olympus 75 1.8 is S tier for me. Unique in what it offers and stellar image quality. I own the other 1.2 primes so I have a good point of reference.
The only Olympus lens I have left is the 40-150, and I am considering replacing it with the Panny 50-200.
I really need to update my list of those lenses! I think that could be a good choice but honestly I find 50mm to start a little long for MY work but I can see it being amazing and I totally want one
@@RhettThompsonFilmI have both the 10-20 and 25-50 lenses, but I use the 25-50 for wide shots and the 40-150 for tighter shots during events. However, I have encountered situations where the extra reach would have been helpful.

I have the Olympus 17 & 25 f1.2, and I can attest that these lenses are some of the best lenses I’ve ever used. The Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 is amazing for portrait work. The 9mm Panasonic Leica is just fantastic too. You didn’t give the Olympus 60mm macro much credit; this lens is fantastic!
12-40pro should be an undoubtable S and 25pro cannot match its price from every aspect
If the lens was a little bit wider or more tele I’d agree but 24-80 vs 70 just doesn’t quite do it for me but that’s just me!

Never seen a video like this, kudos to you for making it. On a funny note, I have the olympus 8mm body cap paired to my olympus Air, hooked up to my cell phone and get 16mp high quality images is well just fun, and c'mon 16mp images for the cell phone.... I have 13 olympus lenses mostly pro lenses, but I would put the 300 f4 in S bracket as I'm a bird/wildlife shooter, just a thought. Looking at some of the panasonic lenses to get away from my olympus fan boy guy thing, so this is very good and needed video. Cheers!
To be honest, I just recently used the 300 mm again and I’m inclined to agree with you. That lens is incredibly sharp and a joy to use. I may have to update this haha.

LOL, you put the Panasonic 9mm f/1.7 in S-Tier because it's in it's own class, but put the Olympus 12-100mm F/4 IS Pro in A-tier... a lens that's also in it's own class. There is NO LENS in the world that covers 24-200mm with an F/4 constant aperture... and has IS on top and only a 15cm focus distance.... and amazing weather sealing. This is a one lens do it all setup. For a LOT of people, this lens will NOT be coming off much. Come on bruh, be objective.

@@RhettThompsonFilm I haven't but... point I'm trying to make is that if you only had ONE lens to shoot an entire film or one lens to be 'stuck with' forever... the 12-100mm would be it. Doesn't matter how good primes are with DOF or sharpness (and it's not like the 12-100mm isnt sharp either), you're stuck at one focal length making it far too limiting. Go on a trek between all sorts of locations; mountains, forests, city, inside buildings, venues, etc. 12-100 will have you covered; sure f/4 isn't super wide open aperture, but it'll work in almost all situations, and at the 100mm (200mm FF equivalent) that's pretty respectable. The other thing is, too many times you just don't know what focal range you'd need; you can't predict it. It's not even that big of a lens anyway at just over 500g; less than the Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 you had in the S-Tier. So, for a do-it-all lens it's by far the most versatile lens on the market, and that includes APS-C and FF lenses, there are only a handful of lenses that come close, but each have some major tradeoff;
Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8: A bit big and a little heavy, but 35mm isn't wide enough.
Canon 24-105mm F/4 L IS: Same as the Olympus, but half the range.
Canon 24-105mm F/2.8 IS: Massive lens, VERY expensive.... still half the range. Amazing aperture though.
Fuji 16-80mm F/4 OIS: Good lens, but limited range and not as sharp as it should be for it's price
Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 IS: Excellent aperture, but not as wide at 17mm (25.5mm after APS-C math) but also short on range (70mm = 105mm) as it's APS-C only.
Nikon 24-120mm F/4: Good lens, but a little soft at the long end and still almost half the zoom range.
General 24-70mm F/2.8 lenses are all good, but the range is almost 1/3rd.
And that's about all there is available across the board for all cameras available.... and with a lot of these, you really need to go full frame so if size is taken into equation, basically only Fuji makes sense with the X-S20 body and either a Fuji 16-80mm F/4 or the Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8. So yeah... class of it's own :)
It’s a wonderful lens, it doesn’t get the praise you captured because of the gap between m43 and FF. The f4 in m43 results in some areas being similar to f8 on FF
@@jasonreese906 F/4 is the same in light gathering. Only depth of field is different.
With the smaller M43 sensor you won’t get as much bokeh. 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve used a lot of the Leica and the better Olympus lenses. I’d say you’ve got the ones I know about right. One disagreement is the Olympus 300mm F4. This lens is as sharp as any lens I’ve used, great IS combo with OM1 and knocking because F4 is slow? Come on, it’s a 300 mm lens. How much better can it get?
Yea it’s tough. The Leica 200 is a 2.8 but the 300 f4 is definitely in a class of it’s own. Or maybe in a class with that Leica. Might have underrated it but if I used it a bit maybe I’d get it
@@RhettThompsonFilm And it tough not to overcrowd the top tiers - there are so many good lenses from these two brands. I think as a wildlife lens the Oly is way better than the Leica 2.8 which needs the extender for similar reach. I’ve owned both, but the 300 is sharper and faster to focus.
Going to have to disagree on some of these lenses. For a start the Sigma f1.4 primes. Very definitely A tier, especially the 56, which pushes close to the S tier level.
The Lumix Leica 45mm macro needs to be bumped down a level due to AF and poor value for money compared to the Olympus 60mm macro, while the Lumix 30mm macro goes up one due to great AF and value for money.
The Leica Nokton 42.5 has to bump to S, just because of the look of the images it produces. The Leica 200mm also has to be S. Who cares if it is niche, for evening sports this is an essential and a full frame 400/2.8 has been a standard for sports news gathering for decades.
The two Lumix PZ zooms continue to get underrated, including here. The power zoom is very useful for video, these lenses are amazingly small and light, very cheap on the used market, and the 45-175, is very sharp. These power zooms need to go up a tier.
i agree with you on the sigma 56mm .. the other ones in the series are good but the 56mm is amazing.

I think the 15mm should be higher. That lens is so small and provides excellent IQ along with the aperture ring/mf switch. I honestly wished the 9mm was built the same way.
I dont understand why you recommend the lumix 42.5 1.7. it is sharp but it has the worst autofocus of all mft lenses i know. Its even in photos it is superslow, hesitant and unrelieable. I hate this lense with a passion and never used it with my gh5 as it is so awful. I tried it with my new gh7 and it is better but still almost unusuable. Yesterday i sat infront of my camere on the left side of the frame , autofocus was in human detection but the 42 refused to focus on me... No other lense does this and lumix has a lot bad focusing lenses.
@@castielvargastv7931 it’s been awhile since I used it but I’ve certainly used worse lenses for the system but I wouldn’t be shocked if it was slow.
