- This week will mark the 15th anniversary of Michael Brecker leaving this planet too early. Let me remember you why he was one of the greatest to ever have graced the saxophone. What an unbelievable solo, with a beautiful camera shot that captured Randy's reaction to it as well! This coming week will be Michael Brecker week on the channel and we will put more content out all dedicated to this tenor saxophone giant.
This is Michael Brecker his solo transcribed on the tune "Hey Fool" by Hal Galper, live in 1978 in Berlin.

I could listen to every saxophonist on the planet and still point out Michael Brecker simply by timbre
He appeared on the scene an absolute killer. When did all his development take place?
Michael: I think I'll play the saxophone...
Michael a few years later at 19 years old: I think I'll move to New York and show everyone how it's done.
He sounded completely mature and accomplished always.
I can never listen to too much Michael Brecker. What a beast of a solo!
Agree, he was a beast. I was amazed when I learnt Michael Brecker helped Eric Marienthal with his "Comprehensive Jazz Studies" book. Not sure what exactly Michael helped with, but Eric thanked him for the review and some good tips with scales, patterns and exercises which Michael was damn good at.
Wow.. pulled my first thought right into the comment section
Yea. But, I forced myself to listen. I’m glad I did. Best ever. MB forever.
What are the odds looking through the comments and finding you here. I played an online gig with you a few years back with the SBCC Lunch Break band. Small world.
This was when Mike was in his Robert De Niro phase. He wouldn’t enter his Steve Jobs phase until years later.
I just LOVE that camera shot capturing Randy's face from around 0:58. He is pretty much like what we all do behind our computers/phones when hearing this solo. This is one of them better examples that embodies why we all love Michael Brecker. The dexterity of Parker/Cannonball (and some more!), the massive energy of Coltrane, the soul and blues from King Curtis and other R'nB saxophonist all in one. 🔥
We will try to put as many Michael Brecker content out this week, as coming thursday marks the 15 anniversary of him passing away. What are your favorite Michael Brecker moments? Are there transformative performances/recordings that maybe even changed the direction of your life? I know he had a transformative impact one me, more on that later this week. Let me know YOUR story or Brecker experience in the comments below!
/Jorre
When he told me that if I wanted to learn sax from the best teacher, I should go to Jerry Bergonzi!
#X1, Well Said: King Curtis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley; not forgetting Joe Henderson - the musical embodiment of the BEST.
Michael Brecker lives!
Three moments of his: the first was Delta City Blues, I was maybe 17 and not a very good saxophonist, and it changed how I viewed the saxophone and helped launch me forward; second was right after I got out of basic training and was at the military music school, I heard his solo performance of Naima from the Massey Hall performance, and once again, it blew my socks off; the third, and perhaps my favorite, is a live recording of Straphangin' in Japan, maybe 1981 or 1982.
I really enjoy how he weaves through virtuosity into soulful passages that are as smooth as butter. It's wonderful that he lived in a time where he could record as often as he did.
As a saxophonist, I feel like the vast majority of us have to have that "I'll never be Brecker moment", and it used to upset me, but these days, I'm just happy to have witnessed all of those moments.
Take care.
And the great Bob Moses on drums!
Only thinking about what there is to come in the next weeks and days just gave me goosebumps. This is so awesome words can't even describe it. Killer transcription. Thank you so much for posting this. Michael Becker, man....gone too soon...
I saw Randy with Billy Cobham in 2019. What impressed me was how Randy would turn towards each soloist and listen deeply to what they were playing. Such a brilliant player!
24 years after the first time I heard Brecker, and he just always continues to amaze! We're blessed he was recorded so much.
And Randy makes beautiful faces 😘
He...KILLED...that...solo! 🎷🔥
IMHO, so creative, original, the BEST saxophone player. How I miss him
Wow. Randy is digging it too. Fantastic transcription as always.
Yeah, love the camera shot! Thanks!
Holy shit, this might just be Brecker's best solo!
No way, he's done much better and I don't even know most of his music
Nope, check out the solo on "Trains" when he was with steps ahead. The album version.
No he oído ningún mal solo de brecker nunca😅 siempre brecker!!❤
Killer transcription!!!! Thanks for posting This is why I love Mike Brecker......taking the down home funky stop time blues combining it with incredible, time, technique and amazing harmonic understanding....He is the reason I play Tenor Saxophone Love you Mike
Brecker is life changing. Thank you for transcribing this!!
The Brecker Brothers. Pioneers and Innovators in their time.
I’d thank you for the unreal transcription, but it makes me want to cry that I’d never be able to play it - then again not many Sax players could!
I’m 65 and I’ve had their first album on 8-track, cassette, LP and now digital. Skunk Funk has to be one of my favorite charts. Raised by a band director who loved Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Stan Kenton, Ella Duke and Dizzy. So many - Stan Getz etc etc
I love how everyone is just absolutely FEELING the grooves. You can see the love and passion, it's hard to find that anymore.
I was lucky enough to see Michael with Paul Simon in London in the 80’s.....Still crazy after all of these years........WOW!
0:34 that Bb
insane
Such good music here man.
So good
Michael his signature phrasing what a hook
when i first listened to this, i couldn’t stop listening again and again.
bravo for this transcription !
What a fine player Michael was. R.I.P. Michael. John.
My first encounter with Michael Brecker was on the "Heavy Metal Bebop" album in the early 1980s. I was in music school then, at a time when college jazz programs were few and far between, and I was barely beginning to wrap my ears around Charlie Parker. Now here was this guy playing things on the tenor that I couldn't begin to fathom. How do I even describe my reaction. "Wow!" seems woefully inadequate, but I've been saying it ever since every time I've listened to, and continue to listen to, Michael. Beyond wow, what really can you say? As far as I'm concerned, Michael Brecker is the pinnacle of where technical mastery, musicality, and creativity converge. Thank you for sharing this!
My first encounter with the Brecker Brothers was the same Heavy Metal Be-Bop in my first year of music school. Blew me away and helped me realize just how awesomely complex and beautiful the music can get - and still have a monster groove
Charlie Parker is so overrated, he doesn't have any skill other playing quickly, and his songs are uninspired and boring
@@dixiemcgee8535 I guarantee you if Michael Brecker were still alive and you asked him who were his biggest influences, Charlie Parker would be near the top of his list.
@@dixiemcgee8535 You're either kidding or you're an idiot. You couldn't play Klaunstance if your life depended on it.
@@dixiemcgee8535 you're brave to make that comment.Too much hype and he=o worsjopping.Parker was great, but there were other musicians who were also great.
Two brothers and both are among the best. Incredible
Simply the best.
Wow! Thanks Jorre for this wonderful transcription. This is one of my favourite Brecker solos of all time. Thanks for all your efforts on this one and thanks so much for sharing, cheers!
Thanks Tony!
One of the most beautiful endings I have ever heard!
Michael literally just shredded on a tenor
So much to learn from the close ups on his embouchure!
hard to believe it's been that long ago
What has always intrigued me about Michael's playing is listening to him do these absurd brain melting fast passages and effortlessly flowing into the absolutely sleeziest, raunchiest, and most bad ass sounding blues licks to finish the phrase. It never fails to amaze me and I can't help but yell and cheer every time I hear him do it on a solo.
It almost seems unfair that someone can play insanely expressively AND have demonic chops to burn like a MFer. It's like, can I get me some of that, please?!
Good God I miss me some live jazz. I want my face to melt like Randy's.
Classic metal link Brecker .. awesome 👏
1:26 it's super interesting to see how michael changes his embouchure to get the overtone from Bb
Wow that was good
Incredible playing as always..... Wow, that transcription, thanks Randy.
GOAT
I never say best ever guitar player or drummer or band whatever but when it comes to Tenor, yeah Mike was the best ever. phrasing and his melodic approach always took you somewhere. Great post!
Michael left us too early.
Wow !!!! Unbelievable.
One of the best!
I've just sent the video of this song to my pianist to show Hal's and the Brecker Brothers' solo, a great and happy coincidence you've just transcribed Michael's solo. Thank you very much!
Outstanding
OMG who is this monster .Such a wonderful musicians
and apparently the tightest rhythm section too... wut! it's legendarily slow to begin with, and then they lock up like one person on those trumpet falls. amazing
My high school and college mentor knew Michael personally. He gave him some lessons on altissimo technique and loved to incorporate his material in lessons. RIP Carl Coan
do you have some tips for the altissimo?
so beautiful
i love randy also.
Oh my god this is a transcription that i always wanted to do. Thanks man
Yeah, me too! :D
Needed a bit more time for this one and got hooked on the interaction in the theme, so went throught till the end. That's what Christmas holidays are useful for :p
@@SharpElevenMusic indeed!

Damn, this is so awesome, how is it possible for someone to transcribe this? O.O I can't imagine haha you are superhuman bro
Haha thanks man! But naah, it's mostly done on patience and coffee 😁
If he's superhuman than what is Michael Brecker, super-alien?! lol ... RIP

damn this is spicy
Moses on drums!
Thank you John Coltrane and Joe Henderson for Michael Brecker 😁
Nice work! I really appreciate your channel.
I have to point thou that the song is not in 4/4.
Hi Fabio, thanks! I do - partly - agree with that. It definitely changes meters in terms of feel, and the bridge is mainly in 3/4.
As I felt it and consulted with a very good drummer, it is mainly in 4/4 for the a section (though with some crossrhythms) and the bridge is mainly 3/4. I chose to go for one 4/4 meter, as that does work and keeps the uniformity.
There are many choices to be made to turn it into sheet music, and this one is the one I felt represented it best at the time. I wonder, how do you hear it? Would love to know :)
/Jorre
@@SharpElevenMusic Hi Jorre
I think it's mostly in 6/8 with some irregular measures in between.
When I tried to transcribe it I couldn't believe how a seemingly simple song could be so complicated. Regarding the form, what I found was:
[A]: 666564 (3x)
[B]: 664 (4x)
Mike's solo starts at the 2nd eighth note of the 4th measure.
What do you think?

This is an amazing track and your transcription looks amazing. I don't see it on your site, however?
Hi, thanks! We keep the most recent transcriptions to the people that support us on Patreon as an extra, with transposition. The older transcriptions from over 3 years become public domain. Hope you understand,
