My dad was a drummer and he told me this is the first song where the drums were the lead instrument on a song. Phil Collins is one of the best to ever do it.
Well for one thing it ISN'T the 'lead' instrument. They play a big part later in the song, that's true. But there were popular songs before it with stand out drum parts. Off the top of my head - Wipeout by The Surfaris.
Phil Collins is a legend- he was the drummer for the band Genesis, then took over as drummer AND lead vocalist in 1976. Genesis officially played their last show recently, but their catalog is amazing and you need to check it out! This song is Phil solo, and Phil's solo career is amazing as well
..........and I was there at their first ever Top Of The Bill performance, with 3,000 others,in THe Croydon Greyhound Pub/Concert Hall when the original bill toppers:"Bell 'n Arc" disbanded the day b4😀
Song is really about knowing that a "blow up is about to happen, before it happens". Written and recorded during a rough divorce process, Phil wrote the song basically to express his frustration of knowing that almost every conversation was going to be a fight. So much so that he would tell friends about it happening DAYS before it actually happened. So the song was about knowing it was about to go off, and figuring "why hold back, just unload all of it". The "counter-point" to this song is "Don't Care Anymore"... one of the best Collins song and almost an instant "anthem" for people who just don't want to put up with BS anymore. Really sad knowing that his neck injury prevented him from making more music over the years. He was one of the most admired drummers of his time, and people loved his writing and vocals. But, with the body of work he left behind, there is absolutely no one who can deny his raw talent on the drums and on the mic.
Watch the live one. You'll be blown away. Oh, and he sings AND he's also the drummer. Trust me, watch the live one with the hundred million or billion views. It's very theatrical without anything really happening. Goosebumps.

The song, according to Collins, were feelings that rose up from a pretty messy divorce he was going through. All the conspiracy theories that Americans have come up with over the years are completely false. The part about drowning is no different than any expression any one of us would use…”if you were drowning I wouldn’t lend a hand!” Sounds pretty serious.

Phil is a world class performer and drummer. The live version is excellent and you should see In the air Tonight the way it's used in the first episode of Miami Vice.
So incredibly sad that your first time with Phil Collins was not his live concert of In the Air tonight. You would have had goose bumps all night long. Seriously. Please, Please watch and listen and react to his Live concert. In the air tonight. Promise you will think it is awesome. Thanks Katie 🌸
My first concert ever was Genesis at Wembley Stadium in London - July 3, 1987. A hundred thousand people, who roared until the ground shook when this song opened. An experience I’ll never forget. Thanks for this video, guys. The most iconic drum solo ever. You should react to the live version. It is just amazing how good Phil Collins is live along with that awesome drum solo he performs himself. He did write the song about a woman. His wife left him as he was just returning from a tour in Japan with his band at the time Genesis After their divorce he said he was haunted by his emotions afterwards and wrote the song.

You need to see the live video of "In the Air Tonight".. My son is a drummer and he has always gotten me Phil Collins CDs for my B-day.. and I tell him, keep them coming!
Phil Collins was a master. The words and feel of this song, I think is about revenge. It was used in the 90’s TV show Miami Vice for years. Hearing this song always brings me back to watching that show. This song to me is an epic example of how to create suspense in music. I listen to all kinds of music and genres. It broadens your perspective on life. I love seeing you guys exploring your musical horizon and enjoying yourselves.

This is one of my favorite songs from Phil Collins.. DMX did a remix I Can Feel It on his 1998 album..it was on repeat when I wrote my first book.. a perfect blend of genres!! Great reaction!!!
The song In The Air was from the album “Face Value,” Face Value, was written by Phil Collins. It was about him the divorce he went through with his first wife. The whole album was about his struggles he faced going through a painful divorce. He started on Genesis as a drummer then head singer quit forcing them to look for a new head singer. After auditioning tons of singers they couldn’t find the right voice. Phil Collin’s stood up and told the band, “ it needs to be sung like this.” After that history was made.
Suggestion: Garth Brooks "when the thunder rolls" and Toby Keith"how u like me now" I believe u will give these two songs the appreciation they deserve..not very literal songs but u may need the words...
@@leiashalhoob6779 I saw Garth Brooks live a few times. He played at the Strawberry Festival one year when I was living in Tampa and it was the first time he played that song ever for the public, no one had ever heard it before and the audience went crazy! Your missing out on the full experience! The build up and the emotion of the song his singing and the audience is so much more when you watch it live.he is the drummer and he sings at the same time.like Roger Taylor from queen. In the UK many yrs ago they used the drumming section for a Cadbury chocolate advert.the drumming gorilla.
Ok guys, if you really want to experience music, then you NEED to listen to some Queen! Those four guys changed music forever. Freddie Mercury, was one ( in my opinion, the very best) front man of all time. An interviewer once asked him what instrument he played, his answer, the audience, darling. And he did too, he had over 100,000 non English speaking people, singing every word with him, while he conducted. Queen were responsible for so many first’s, if you have half an hour to spare, watch their performance at the Live aid concert, voted by many musicians as the best performance ever!
He drops the thing on the third beat at the end of this song. Phil Collins is one of the best drummers there I ever was that’s what the fight was that just the woman it was fight over right after that he went solo. This is his first solo album after he left Genesis Liz, the queen.

I’m legit SCREAMING at my phone “YO, he’s the drummer guys!!!!” Hahahah. Damn I feel old , lol. But Watch the live if u wanna see him go off!

I was there at the first ever Top Of THe Bill performance in Croydon, South East London, with 3,000 others,in 1972:)
GENESIS that is !
I saw Genesis at work last year and bless his heart I think it’s his last tour
Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in the biz!
Sining and playing drums is one of the hardest things musically to do, Phil Collins was a genius.
Live version guys;) goosebumps!
Please More Phil Collins he’s one of My Favorite Music Artists Of All Time!😭🙌🏽👑🐐💫
Y’all need to watch the video of him performing this playing those damn drums jamming 🔥🔥🔥
Phil collins is the lead singer and is playing the drums, and its the group Genesis
Absolutely… Paris 2004!
@@marieclaudeb.2366 California for me
He was in Genesis, but this isn't Genesis. This is when he went solo
He was going through a divorce. It's about the tension built up in the relationship, and how he felt about her actions, and the release of it being over.
You need to see the live video of "In the Air Tonight".. My son is a drummer and he has always gotten me Phil Collins CDs for my B-day.. and I tell him, keep them coming!
You need to see the live version
Watch this song live in Paris. A must watch!
Phil Collins IS the drummer also!! Hes singing and playing the drums at the same time!! Watch the live version of this...amazing
Phil is singing and drumming! 💙🎶✊ Check him out doing Mama!
Been watching you guys for a bit, & really enjoy your comments...you seem to really dig on the purpose & genuine meaning of everything y'all watch; I appreciate your sincerity. Gotta suggest you must watch the live version of this, it's next level man...Phil is so gifted
You need to watch the live version. Phil Collins is the drummer and he is great!
Great reaction! Another 70's BANGER is "The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy. Classic rock- it was HUGE!
This is one of my favorite songs from Phil Collins.. DMX did a remix I Can Feel It on his 1998 album..it was on repeat when I wrote my first book.. a perfect blend of genres!!
Great reaction!!!
The live version is excellent
Should have watched the live version in concert, it was great too, but love this song ,
You need to check "Easy Lover". It's a duet with Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey, who was in Earth, Wind, and Fire!
You need to watch the live video. It’s incredible!
Watch you young men of a new generation listening and discovering music from another generation just makes me so happy it's crazy! Keep going!
Yes, The Thunder Rolls!!
@@jennifercarp807 Live!!! So you get to hear the 3rd verse!
@@leiashalhoob6779 I saw Garth Brooks live a few times. He played at the Strawberry Festival one year when I was living in Tampa and it was the first time he played that song ever for the public, no one had ever heard it before and the audience went crazy! It was a good 6 months after that before it aired on the radio for the first time
Your missing out on the full experience!
You guys needed to watch this live in concert so you can see him playing the drums much better
He drops the thing on the third beat at the end of this song. Phil Collins is one of the best drummers there I ever was that’s what the fight was that just the woman it was fight over right after that he went solo. This is his first solo album after he left Genesis Liz, the queen.
