This song in particular he wrote it himself, and then went back to the studio and recorded the original by himself. recording each instrument piece one at a time until the whole thing was done. it's by far one of his most memorable songs he has ever done.

It always cracks me up when the younger generation discovers music from the older generation. Phil Collins is counter among the top five drummers in the world. I'm neon fortunate to have been to a lot of concerts including his when he played in Tampa Florida in 1984-86. I can't remember much from back then because most of my days back then were in a blur. Bit I sure remember the concert. When started on the drums the whole crowd 1,000s of people got up and cheered. The guy next to me spilled his beer on me but I didn't care. The energy and excitement from one of these icons concerts is just amazing.

Hey, good reaction! This song has been sampled a lot and has been used in video games. It came out in 1981 and was from Phils first solo album, where Phil poured out his frustration and anger over his divorce. He was also the drummer in the band Genesis and stayed in the band after he went solo. He was hugely popular in the 80’s, charting with the band and as a solo artist. He is one of only 3 artists to ever sell 100,000,000 records as both a band member and as a solo artist. The other two are Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and Michael Jackson. The robotic chorus you hear is created by his keyboard player singing into a device called a vocoder.

You can tell when the audience realizes the drums are coming as he walks to the set they start cheering and applauding because they KNOW the wait is almost over. The song was actually about the breakup of his 1st marriage which ended in divorce, Phil admitted to this on a talk show, about the song, I think it was his inner self looking and talking at himself on what he did to his marriage, his inner self saying you did this you have only yourself to blame, ( and that lead guitars wailing and crying sound almost as if it were his wife saying “Help me, Please help me Phil”) his inner self saying to him, you saw this coming and yet you still did nothing to stop it happening and now you regret it, but it's too late now to say you are sorry she does not want to know, her love for you has gone and you are angry with yourself for letting this happen, or at least that's what I think he is trying to say or tell us, trying to express/explain to us how he feels about it, it’s brilliantly done but also very sad at the same time.

Great tune! If you want to see what he is about, watch the entire concert "Final Farewell". Best ever! He is a drummer by trade, but has great vocals.

He was the drummer for f*cking GENESIS, one of those bands on the eternal A-List. You are not young enough to not know them.

Phil Collins started as a drummer and the band he was with I think if i remember right their name was Genesis. They were very popular, had gold records etc. One day out of the blue while they were on a major tour the lead singer just quit with no warning. They were at a sold out large venue ready to go on, Phil stepped up and sang the leads and played drums. The crowd loved him and after that he was the bands lead singer. He went on to have even bigger success as a solo artist.

Dude you must have one of the biggest, happiest and infectious smiles i've seen! Glad you enjoyed the song. I've been watching a whole batch of first time reaction vids to this song, from you 'youngsters' who never heard it first time around. That song (and the drum break in particular' are a defining moment in music history. Enjoy

One of the biggest selling artists of the '80s and early '90s, and one of only three artists to sell over a million records as a member of a band and then also over a million just as a solo artist. Alongside Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson.
