Now you guys heard what I heard right? And to top it off, it was noted that she was hoarse during her last performance(which was this one) and this is the end product of a hoarse voice! It was almost as if she said, "oh, well since this is my last time singing this song, I'm just slaying everything standing and walking". Also, it was noted that this performance was next best performance that she did since opening night of DreamGirls on broadway. Even Sheryl Lee Ralph was blown away that opening night of DreamGirls of Jennifer's performance. She said that Jennifer sung that song from a place that no one knew where it came from and it left her breathless as she stood in the wings watching Jennifer sing.
She was incredible. When she opens up from the raspy stuff on sustained notes, it's still clean voice, which is just incredible. She's one that I refuse to even try and dissect as far as a voice. It's really much more than singing that she's doing, she's pouring out her entire self. It just comes out as music
that HA-HA-HA!!!!! towards the end really showa you. she was/is human and she was thinking. i'm not doing this tomorrow, lol. she was getting emotional and i loved it!!!!
This woman's vocal are beyond mind blowing. She is one of the best singers of all time. She is in the top 5, for me, and she is Number one in the group!
i saw the show in 1982.. did not know the score or the story...experienced it as theatre is meant to be... So when it got to the amazing last scene of act one and they started fighting in "motown recitative" I was already gasping and then when it flowered into the unexpected "aria" I was just not prepared for one of the greatest nights of my life. I couldnt believe the power of the story let alone the mind blowing performance. Its great to hear this but that night I experienced all of it new and in real time... that remains one of the high points in my life. It happened in the opera house a few times as well and with Ian McKellan in Richard III.
She sounds so good in here honestly I’m shocked, her vocals are unmatched and what’s weird is that her vocals although less harsh and with way less growling than the TONY awards performance she still manages to convey the emotion and I feel it more in this performance. 6:49 is a standout part because it sounds like she’s going to cry even on the “no no no no way” I admire her as a vocalist so much, almost 40 years have passed since this performance and I have yet to find a singer with this much power, ability to change her tone, able to growl and not sound hoarse etc. She’s a legend and I find it disappointing she never made it huge or released music as iconic as this. A wasted talent that the world will never replicate.
I see your point but she managed to make one of the most famous songs of all time that will never be duplicated. That alone will keep her name on the history books for as long as the world turns. That's legend.
@@igotyourback9175 yeah but too bad she is overshadowed by Jennifer Hudson when people research dreamgirls. Hudson is amazing no doubt but Holliday deserves the recognition.
The emotion of it being her final night, considering the subject matter of the song, makes this performance even more poignant. She sings it a lot more tenderly (for her). And honestly, I think she WAS crying - she didn't even sing all the "love me, love me" climax. And honestly, Jennifer's sound is "too Black" to have crossed over. And possibly, that was for the best - she didn't ever bother changing to appeal to the masses.
No knocks on the movie, but Jennifer Hudson is kind of annoying. It's like she's impersonating Jennifer Holiday, and Beyonce is the worst Deena. She can't out. The best performance in the movie is Eddie Murphy and he didn't get the Oscar.
OH. MY. GOD. I thought I had seen every performance of this woman doing this song but I have never seen this one and I can whole heartedly say that I am speechless after this one. Those are not human vocal chords. They just aren't. Jennifer Holliday - you are EVERYTHING!!!
THAT LAST "YOU'RE GONNA LUHHHHH-AHHHH-HUH-VUH MAAAAAY!" Now, see. That, children, is what's known as Icon Behavior. The Legend truly came out of Ms. Holiday and we as a nation have never been the same.
I've heard Jennifer Holliday sing the hell out of this song on a number of occasions, but THIS takes the cake. This performance took everything she had in her and then some! I need a cold drink after listening to this!
Chills, tears, and totally amazed! Honey let me get hoarse and tear this song or any song up!!! She was amazing in this show, totally amazing. So much conviction and true personalization and interpretation . LAWD, LAWD, LAWD!!!
Just when I thought I couldn't hear a better version, Jennifer tops herself with this one! Oh my! If I had witnessed this, I probably would've had a seizure as the Holy Ghost moved me with the spirit!
. . .and if I were the producer, I would have simply shut the show down: sent the orchestra home and turned off the lights "for ev-vaaa"! Because the show was OVER. IT WAS OVA! Jennifer Holliday set the Imperial Theater on fire with this "last" performance--and she knew it. That is all. The End!
Now that is how you sing to bring the house down! She slayed it like never before! That had to be one of Broadway's most electric nights that had to be seen to be believed. I love Hudson, but she's got nothing on Holliday!
Do you know where I can get the full show? She and Loretta were in RARE form during this show. I need it in my life (again)! lol any help would be greatly appreciated
officialmaurice1 There’s a full show version on RUclips but you have to find it. The “dvd” version is at some New York library but you can’t check it out.
It’s really kinda crazy to think that she was only on Broadway in this role for just one full year. I wonder why she left such a successful production (which she was the star of) in such a short amount of time?
If I remember correctly, it was a super taxing role, both vocally and emotionally for her. Plus the production wasn’t the healthiest experience for her.
Finding the NYC/LA performances from 81/82 is almost impossible to find. The entire play is on RUclips, but the quality isn't great ( I appreciate it don't get me wrong) I've looked everywhere for these performances.
This was her last broadway performance. She went on the shows tour in LA. The show would still be on broadway for like 2 more years. And the reason Deena sounds different is because Sheryl Lee Ralph isn't playing her in this show. It's Linda Lelani Brown
@@ABMS721 Linda is no slouch. I like Sherl, Linda, and I believer Terry has played Deena as well. As a 1980 baby, I'm in love with all the Dreams. But we all know Effie was that nigga.
Deena is Linda Leilani Brown. She would go out to LA with Jennifer for the first national tour. The revamped Act II Opening was actually created for her. Her Deena was more “Diana Ross-esque.” And the fact she looked exactly like Diana Ross
Tony Awards performance was way better because she severely hoarse here and it got in the way of those long winded notes Ms Girl is known for and I don’t recall her having to travel in the touring company in LA. I heard she left at the time to go have a SOLO CAREER and the others went or were part of the touring company. But folks have to give her a break, she did it for so many years, so many performances and then some and after awhile your voice just gets tired and shuts down.
If that's screaming, then you should be able to do it just as well and earn a legacy that can't be matched in the process. You just don't have the capacity to understand nor appreciate deep, gut-wrenching soul SANGING!
Can't stop listening to it. True, those are not human vocal chords!

Beautifully stated!
Sheer vocal genius. The best part of all is to hear Jennifer enjoying herself. What a voice.

No, it's Linda Leilani Brown who temporarily took Sheryl's place as Deena
