One of the things that made the show so appealing was how overly sweet and saccharine it WASN’T. The characters are snarky and jaded which fits perfectly with the setting. Miss Hannigan is the most obvious example of this, but even the kids are sarcastic and cynical. You can hear it even in these short clips. It seems like that gets lost in the “popular” conception of Annie which emphasizes the typical upbeat positive traits to the degree people think of it as too cute and annoying, when that wasn’t the intention of the producers (we also have endless watered-down cutesy school play versions to thank for that). These were supposed to be street savvy people in tough times. Don’t get me wrong the overall message is meant to be uplifting but its delivered with a lot of grouchy fun. Also it premiered in 1970s New York when the city and its general mood was more gritty and raw than it is today. Too overly sweet and the show would have failed. The producers and the gloriously talented cast hit it out of the park.

Dorothy Loudon's brilliance lies in how much fun she had performing "Little Girls." That's why we could laugh at it. She was such a lovable heel. So many actresses failed to draw out the humor in this song.

I love how Carol Burnett was absolutely real. Made you believe in the character's predicament and even sympathize with her a little. I do wish I had seen Ms. Loudon, though I'm a little put off by stories I've recently read about how she really hated children (and dogs) and was nasty to them backstage. I can believe it when I watch her Tony Award win on RUclips. She was running against Andrea McArdle and didn't even thank her!

OMG, another recording of D. Loudon on 'Little Girls'! I didn't know there was a recording other than the cast album. Loving every second of it.

In all these years there's not been an Annie that even approaches you, Andrea. What an amazing instrument you have and had. Thanks. It's so fun to return to this score and hear you and Dorothy.

When I saw Annie Mcardle left .
I saw Shelley Bruce as Annie!!!
Never saw Loudon but I saw the best Hannigan in my opinion!!!!!
I saw Alice Ghostley, she was hysterical!!!!
She got a standing ovation after Little Girls,
I was so young, but boy do I remember her!!!!!!

Even the kids were powerhouses with bullhorn voices that could project across a venue. Classic broadway, pure theater.
