George's ability to go from absolute screaming, and growling vocals to beautiful soft sweet singing is astounding, and doing it night after night. Without destroying his voice.
We are so lucky to have recordings of George Hearn's magnificent performance in ST - but there is precious little of Dorothy. How wonderful to have this glimpse of her. She was one of the truly GREAT Mrs. Lovetts.
She played it more broadly than any other major performer I have seen. Sort of Miss Hannigan in London. Still its the inimitable Dorothy Loudon, a great performance. l Thanks for posting.
This is my favorite song from "Sweeney Todd." These two are unreal in this performance. I love it. Thanks so much for posting it. Now, if I someone can post some clips of Elaine Paige as Mrs. Lovett, I will have seen every imagining of that character that I require to see.
32 years ago, at age 18. on my first ever trip[ to NYC, I saw this show with both of those performers -- who were replacement... Dorothy Loudon was astounding. One of the most amazing nights I have ever spent in the theatre. Thanks for sharing this.
Wow - I'd never seen Dorothy Loudon's performance before. A bit of a cross between Angela Lansbury and Patti LuPone, with a hearty dose of earthiness. I loved how she lost it during the "General" bit, and her body language is just wonderful (the hard work convincing Sweeney, the cracking up, the vamping when she's beside Hearn). Just wow.
Loudun must have been one of the great Lovetts, maybe not very English, but the voice and the comedy come thru loud and clear. Guessing there must a full video of this production then ? let's pray.- stranger things have......popped up. Pun intended.
Such an underrated performer. Dorothy Loudon was the full package.
Oh my God. Brilliant.
She is fantastic as Mrs.lovette! Sings the shit out of the score!

I would do anything for an entire pro-shot of the 1980 cast
can we talk about how someone snuck a camera in here considering they were big

For years I have longed to see Dorothy in this role, but I had begun to despair. This is a gift! Thanks so very much!
They had too much fun with the "general" part, cute.
I love how hard she has to work to get him to understand what she's talking about and how tired she is by the end of that little spell. Glorious.

It's brilliant how she goes from Mrs. Hannigan to Mrs. Lovet, two very similar characters, yet she's so INDIVIDUAL with each one!
What a performance!
Saw Hearn with Lansbury on n SF. He was electric.

One of the lushest, meatiest performances of this ferocious bite of theatre: a fabulous find & a rare treasure!
Grazi, carolineorchange21!!!!
My pleasure, doll!
Thank you for sharing this! We're so fortunate this is preserved in some form. And the little jig Mrs. Lovett does after stumping Sweeney? 🤌
thanks
i love dorothy!!! such a soft voice
do you, per chance, have the complete recording of this performance??
AAAAMEN! BTW, I LOVE your username!!!
@SweeneyHyde
:) indeed
She brings a sexiness to the role so you believe that they have a sexual relationship which is referred to later in Bye the Sea!
I always thought Hearn was a weak choice for the Todd role... Loudon steals the show!
Excuse me but George hearn is perfect for Sweeney.
