I love how much she really sings in this song. Angela will ALWAYS be one of the greats but she doesn’t have the music that Dorothy does in this song. She really lands those melodies and it’s stunning.
This is a great performance, yet as different from Angela Lansbury's as could be imagined. Thats what makes a great role, one that different performers can succeed in, each with his or her own uniqueness. A great performance but a great performer, no longer with us. Thanks ever so much for posting this.
Thanks so much for uploading this! What a wonderful performance. The more I see of this, the more impressed I am with the talents shown by Miss Loudon. What a gem she was.
I think, when the line's delivered well, it's just so typical of Mrs. Lovett. She's so practical and so self-centered that she sees a chapel burning down as a glass-is-half-full situation -- "Isn't it great that the chapel burned down? I got this lovely harmonium out of the bargain!" -- instead of feeling sorry about the chapel, or even just knowing to show a little tact, and not brag about her bargain-hunting prowess when a burning chapel is involved.
A great performance - I love how she manhandles Sweeney (shaking him from side to side, fiddling with his coat). Less crazed and more earthy, I think. Definitely different from Lansbury or LuPone, but still the lovable Mrs. Lovett.
Replying twelve years later, but she says it was great that the harmonium was "Only partly singed" when the bigger news is that a chapel had to burn down for her to get it. So she commemorates buying a nice instrument on the cheap, but completely ignores a church burning down, that's what gets the laughs

Dotty was such an amazing performing... the tremble in her voice is chilling...
Wow! Her voice is so beautiful! I love Dorothy Loudon, wish we had more of her singing! A great force that will be missed! RIP
Stephen Sondheim is the gift of ages! Did someone so brilliant really exist?

I think I like Loudon better than Lansbury in this role!
