  • In this video I have a first look and review the Hilleberg Jannu 4 season 2 person mountain tent. I take the tent on a field test to one of my favourite locations in the Mourne Mountains - Honestly very impressed and I find one feature so amazing that I am now adding this tent to my wish list... Hi Tom. Having lived with this tent for a couple of years, I think you were bang on the money with all your observations. I did a lot of research before I got the tent and in my opinion you have created the definitive Jannu review, both in terms of detail and balanced content. A great reference point for anyone considering the tent. Very well thought out and put together. Cheers. gary

      Hi Gary, firstly let me thank you again for borrowing this great tent and making this review possible. I hope that you enjoyed the video and great that as the tents owner you think about it in a similar way to myself. Its hard to totally get the feel of a tent in one outing but this Jannu certainly was very impressive in many other ways apart from the tension on the inner... ATVB and I am sure you cant wait to get out in it again.. Tom

    Hi Tom, it's good to see you out again. I hope you're feeling ok now?
    I just wanted to say there's many tent reviewers on RUclips and then there's you! Your reviews are absolutely amazing, indepth, honest and you pick up on every aspect of the tents that other reviewers seem to miss. Well done Tom, I hope your channel grows and more reviews are forthcoming.

      Hi Martin thank you for watching and taking the time for this detailed positive comment.. Yeah the reviews are long but I try to cover everything that I feel is relevant. When you get home though you always think of something that you missed, but sure that's always the way. This one was a challenge for many reasons and its so much harder doing the review when you are out on camp. I have to be feeling ok as my pack for this one some how creeped up to 14kg... ATB and thanks once again. I hope you too are getting out for many camps as its so good for body and mind... Tom

    Another great review. I had never really considered a Jannu before but I really like the way this type of tent can be pitched from the ground up in windy conditions. The tension on the inner was also surprisingly good. Had always thought I would be tempted by a nallo but would definitely consider one of these now too. Thanks.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  2 года назад +1

      Hi John, great to hear your comments thank you. Yes that tension on the inner was a very welcome surprise. The pole structure is a bit like a North Face tadpole but with the rear crossing point much higher giving greater internal height and space. The strength is moved up a bit to the roof but then the effective guying system supports the poles lower down. The tent feels very special and extremely well made with great attention to detail especially regarding the construction.. ATB Tom

My 25 year old Terra Nova Voyager is still serving me well but if she ever gives up the ghost this would definitely be a contender to replace her! Working with batteries in the cold is so frustrating, had a similar problem a couple of videos back. Plugged my phone into my battery pack just to find the cold had completely killed it! Oh the joy! Hi Gary, thank you for watching and your comments especially as a fellow content creator on RUclips... Yeah the pole structure is similar but with the Jannu having the rear poles cross tighter in the roof... The power banks can be slow to charge as well in cold conditions. I had plenty of power banks to recharge but not plenty of cables for everything at once ha ha.. ATB Tom

    Hello Tom, cuz of your videos I bought my ever first hillebergh staika. I am a woman like to camp so much solo. I must admit I really love the tent, I am afraid to not like any other tent anymore. Very easy to set up, so comfortable and the quality is superb. I used mine and cuz I love it so much I am afraid if I can tear it apart by tightening the guyline so much. But i should of just trust the quality. Over all hands down hillebergh😘🥰❤️

      Hi Elirita, you are hooked and now like most Hilleberg owners you will be thinking about another one (why are you watching this video ha ha). I have used many many tents from different brands and honestly the materials, design and construction of Hilleberg tents is the best by a long way that I have come across.. I always give Hilleberg tents good reviews but that is because of my experience with them and other tents... Hilleberg do not cut any corners when making a tent and this is what you need if you are looking at long term durability. For example, the groundsheet on your tent is thicker than any other manufactures and this simply means it will last longer... ATB and hope you have many happing camping trips...Tom

    Great review. I really like what I see with Hilleberg tents and I keep coming back to them. The only thing that concerns me is the weight. 7+ lbs seems a bit high but I don't want to "cheap out" on quality, as my life may depend on it. Are my concerns misplaced?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Год назад +1

      Hi Major, thank you for watching and commenting. Hilleberg really consider function and durability of their tents so the materials and poles are stronger that many other brands. The groundsheet on this tent for example is 70d where some other manufactures use as low as 30 or even 20d fabrics to reduce the weight (low weight sells tents but reduces durability). Some will say its over kill but in my experience its definitely not. I have tested tents with thinner less durable fabrics and poles (look at my review of the MSR Access two). Hilleberg's also hold their value remarkably well and part of that is because they stand the test of time... I am not saying that they are perfect as some compromises have always got to be made. If you are going to camping in environments that are remote and you need to trust your tent then definitely worth it...Tom

    Hello! Thanks for the great overview! Would you consider Hilleberg Tarra to be Jannu's big brother? Trying to decide between two tents (Jannu and Tarra) for our upcoming trips to northern Sweden (Abisko) is a challenging task. Do you have any thoughts on the Tarra tent for a 4-6 day trip for two people (and a dog)? Yes, extra durability and wind resistance come at a cost (both in weight and cost). I would appreciate your feedback on this!

    Hi Tom! Your channel is excellent and very informative, thanks for all the effort that goes in to putting all down in to the well edited videos we can all watch, the best on you tube I feel... So in reviewing all your content on two man tents I am down to the standard Kaitam 2 and the Jannu. I live in the Rocky mountains of Canada where I usually find shelter out of the wind and generally extreme wind is not my usually my issue, (I see why your content is often flavoured this way.... N.I. must be tough when its blowing) but snow can be at times... so my real decision is livability of the tent, what feels better to sleep in, store gear, when there is rain front coming through for 5 hours and you need to prep food and drink etc etc..... what do you think feels most enjoyable? And one last thing, I like the sand colour but in the red label thickness you can see the inner colour it seems, and for me is not so great.... what is your favourite colour Hilleberg and why? I currently own a newer Nammatj 3 GT in green, but feel it is more of a car camping tent or winter pulk in tent because of bulk and weight, I really don't like the way the non vestibule end is so low, in bad weather/humid conditions it can wet my sleeping bag. Hi thank you for watching my video on the Hilleberg Jannu.. A very different tent that the Kaitum.. The Kaitum has much more space and storage and is in reality much longer too due to the vertical doors. The Kaitum is light and pretty strong and with the twin vestibules very versatile for different or changing conditions and also more liveable. If you are going to use it for two people then it will really excel. The Jannu is definitely stronger and can be made stronger still with 10mm poles. Its also freestanding and has more that enough room for one but a bit tight for two.. definitely less versatile with its lower profile and single vestibule... as to the colours then I have had them all and dont really have a favourite. Stock can be limited so colour wise you might just have to take what is available... best wishes Tom

Nammatj has more durable fabrics but this doesn't really matter. The inner of the Nammatj pops and flaps and cracks in the wind where the Jannu doesn't...The 3 pole structure and guying on the Jannu is very strong. It has always struck me how little appreciation most tent reviewers pay to the fact that some tents can be set up wit an external pole setting, so you can break down/set up the tent as a whole. I consider this a major benefit. I was wondering: have you ever reviewed a Helsport tent? Norwegian brand, I think they are really well made and not as expensive as Hilleberg. External poles, but in a full sleeve (I know, this needs extra care while setting up. Also, I always wondered if there's no risk of freezing poles to sleeves in severe frost/snow. Hi Tom. In your tent reviews one thing I never see you mention is lying down flat on a pad, how much space you have next to the inner above your head / face. That is one reason I am interested in a Scarp vs other tents, because of the vertical ends and I am 6ft3. Also, with any of the Hilleberg tents, have you ever had any water leaking through the seams? Because they don't seal them apparently, some people have had issues with that, water getting through the stitching. Thanks.

I have only used a Staika on one occasion and I also now have 10mm poles for my own Jannu. Set up like this I believe it is stronger due to the fat that you can orientate it vestibule into the wind (as Hilleberg recommend) where the brow pole supports the structure in addition to the other poles, making it semi geodesic. As per snow loading have a look at my video in the snow where the Jannu is buried and at that point it was using the 9mm poles and performed perfectly... best wishes Tom

      Hi Kyle. This is actually my Jannu in the video. By chance I also owned an Allak 2. I literally just sold it this week. The main difference in the 2 is strength and functionality. The Jannu is by far the stronger tent and able to withstand significantly higher winds and snow loading. The Allak is less structurally strong (albeit still a very robust tent), but the extra internal height 105cm vs 100cm and the twin entrances and vestibules (with larger access) make it a more functional and comfortable 2 man tent. Ultimately it comes down to your intended use (solo or 2 person) and how harsh the conditions are you intend to camp in. If you favour comfort get the Allak. If you favour strength get the jannu. For me personally tho the Jannu is a bit more “special” in terms of overall design 👍

    Thing is, its not just 4 season Hilleberg tents which are renowned for condensation its all Hillebergs..Being 4 season and keeping the cold wind out is no excuse for poor ventilation, there are many 4 season tents with proper ventilation options. Many tents have condensation but not usually in the inner and Hilleberg are the only company who recommend having a little towel and waterproof cover for the foot box of your sleeping bag.

      Hi Chris, there is a lot to answer here so forgive me if its a little disjointed..... I have read about and used many many Hilleberg tents and properly tested them as you are aware. My experience is not having condensation issues or having ventilation issues with any. There is no doubt that the theory of bringing the flysheet right down to the ground definitely seals out weather but reduces ventilation. However that's why there are top vents. American designs such as The North Face have more air flow under the fly as it doesn't come right to the ground. This however can end up being very drafty in cold conditions. In my opinion 4 season tents should focus on strength and weather protection not ventilation.. Fjalraven have more venting options on some tents I will admit but I have had two issues with the only Fjallraven (Abisko Lite 2) tent I have tested. I had hoped it was the perfect tent but the tent itself had a fabric damage issue (not from my use), and the customer service was exceptionally poor. They offered to send me a repair kit or 3rd party repair with no mention of warranty. So for me and the kind of camping that I do I have much greater value in the fantastic durability strength and customer service from Hilleberg, than possibly better ventilation but poor durability and customer service from Fjallraven.. just my thoughts and thank you for yours... best wishes Tom

    Sit comfortably? Are you a giant or is that tent designed for midgets? All wall angles of that tent looks weird and vestibule looks miserable. I'd call that tent a design failure.
    I have some experience of Saivo. Three person tent but it was so small and low in the vestibule it was difficult for two person to sit side by side for cooking food. And water from the melting snow dripped to the back of my neck and fabric hit the side of my head... Another vestibule in Saivo is ridiculously low, suitable only for some gear...
    Also Staika has slanted side walls. For example compared to Keb dome it just looks bad. Long time ago dome tents had almost vertical side walls and were very spacious inside.
    I guess Hilleberg does this to cut weight down. Bad shaped tents I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

      Hi thank you for your comments. Surely you understand design trade offs... More aerodynamic makes it stronger to high winds but less space or height... This tent is not designed for volume it is designed to have a small footprint for locations where space to pitch is limited... Surely you also understand different people have different needs, but you state you would not recommend to any one? You talk about "midgets" not really appropriate language in our current society.... I contrast however I totally agree with your comments on the Staika slanted walls limit space but help it to shed wind.. I don't have experience of the Saivo but the low vestibule looks very aerodynamic making it super resistant to high winds which for me personally I would be prepared to live with. ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 High winds and snowfall press slanted walls even more down. Wind resistance comes mostly from the poles and their ability to support the structure and firm anchoring of storm lines to the ground. I don't see much sense to compromise the main purpose of the tent - which is to give usable shelter for users and their gear - for a bit smaller weight and quite a lot imaginary benefits for wind resistance because of slanted walls and low ceiling.
      Real geodesic dome is a half sphere. It is the strongest known shape to cover area and to give a lot of living space. Side walls start vertical. I have to call it false to claim slanted walls are better. And they are not because when wind presses slanted wall down strain moves forward in the distorted structure. You can say slanted part of the wall has given up then.
      Small footprint don't mean slanted walls or low ceiling.
      Definitely Saivo is a very strong tent because it has five poles with many crossings. Materials and workmanship are very good also. Unfortunately when compared to traditional tunnel tent (Keron, Spitsberg etc.) it is a bit too much inferior when it comes to living space. Pitching Saivo is very certain but actually a tunnel is faster when used in expedition style

      @@bekanav Ok some really great information shared here thank you. There are many variables here and I agree that sloping walls can allow the build of snow loads and also catch winds when they are blown flat if there is too much fabric... I suppose it can depend on the degree of sloping or amount of fabric and how much tension is on it.. Tunnel tents definitely add more living space but need managed more in heavy wet snow falls and as you say are super fast to pitch. Tent design is a long way off proper regulation as to how the tent will actually perform, but any time that I have contacted Hilleberg about a particular design they have significant reasons for it and they do produce so many different designs at a similar weight and the user can select which suits their particular needs. I am not saying that they are perfect as Hilleberg doesn't seem to want to make any changes to any of the designs but then if you are selling all the tents you can make why would you change... I have handled many Hilleberg tents and always found them very well made and constructed. I also like the fabric thickness for long term durability. So thank you once again for your detailed reply... ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you. It is of course true Hilleberg has high quality products, both workmanship and materials. Certainly there is no perfect tent and it is a matter of personal preference which qualities are the most significant to you. I guess I'm getting middle aged because I prefer good living space and no brainer pitching and kind of simplicity in design😂
      One more advantage of quite vertical side wall is that storm lines attach to better angle than if wall is sloping. But of course wind pressure for more vertical wall is bigger also.
      Thank you for your reviews which are well made and informative👍

      I have had this tent for over 12 years now, did a lot of research before spending $, use if few times a year on solo hiking trips, all types of weather and terrain , mostly in australia and NZ, if you were looking for comfort for 2 people it’s probably bit tight but I used it with my son and it’s definitely doable. To me minor compromise of space is negligent comparing to confidence this tent will last in any weather, its super quick to setup, it’s self supporting frame, never compromise on quality when it comes to tents, shoes and backpack especially going solo multiple days, jannu easily towers above other expensive tents especially ones with multiple pole connectors/junctions creating weak points, low level vestibule on jannu can be tricky to get used to but when you do cooking under it is easy, thanks for good review
