Best 1 Person 4 Season Tent - Hilleberg Akto Vs Hilleberg Soulo - Review - Head to Head

  • HILLEBERG SOULO OR HILLEBERG AKTO - This video will help you decide which one suits your wild camping requirements. I discuss tent design, pitching - setup, interior volume with particular reference to height and length of the tents. Why does one tent feel longer despite Hilleberg saying they are the same length? Is there a modification to one of the tents that will help you decide which one is best? What type of conditions is each most suitable for?

    This is the best comparative review of these 2 tents that I have seen.
    Putting a real person in both and comparing the suitability for sleeping position,cooking etc is what makes this revue so relevant.You also give clear assessments without waffling( or you edited it well )
    I went for the Akto as better fitting my backpacking purpose in UK may-sept.
    I also went for Green as blending in but the red does look good in snow.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 года назад

      Hi Ben, great choice. You will love it. Sand would be my favourite colour too but I couldn't get one at the time. The 10mm pole makes a big difference as when its windy the top of the tent really gets pushed down and this obviously cant be guyed out in any way to support it so the 10mm gives lots of extra stability for a minimal weight difference. Hope you get many adventures with it. ATB Tom

    Great review Tom, I have an Akto and use it all year round in the forests around Oslo and 3 season kayaking around Hvaler archipeligo. Pitching in the dark of winter and snow is still real easy and you feel super snug - I'm a short arse 170cm so can sit up fine. I use a footprint and would highly recommend it for the Akto, the extra weight is well worth it. Also recommend getting used to putting your thumb along the zip to keep it moving - it gets caught in the outer vent if you don't. Hilleberg make fantastic kit, I have a Nalo 2GT for two people and it's a joy - so thanks for great reviews and yep, I subscribed.

      Hi Pearse, thank you for watching and commenting. I totally agree with the footprint thing to protect the tent and also give you more clean dry workable space in the vestibule. Hi Bugsy, a great choice. I still have an Akto as I have sold both my red Label and black label Soulos... In fact I even changed my red Akto for a sand one. However it's having to fight for survival as I have acquired a Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 and for only 300g more it offers far more space and probably as strong if not stronger.... I only keep a certain number of tents so if one comes into the household one must go out... ATB Tom

    I think the Hilleberg Soulo is a fantastic product with so much more safety and robustness than my cheaper tents. I use it for wild camping from bicycle or kayak. The price is eye-watering though. Maybe the solution is to buy one with a view to using it over many years and/or share the purchase cost with friends/relatives who also camp solo. Having said that, when the wind is blowing and rain lashing down the price seems much more reasonable from within its shelter.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  2 года назад

      Hi Ian, thank you for your comments. The price is definitely expensive but when you look at the construction and attention to detail it helps a little bit. They also hold their value exceptionally well and if you are going to use your tent for demanding conditions then you know that the chance of failure is much less than with many other tents on the market... Tom... best review on a Hilleberg product online IMO. Adding in the Unna would have covered the whole single person red label tent line. That is the one I’m mostly interested in. I prefer the Soulo. It's more comfortable and feels more spacious. And it's more 'airy' inside. Deffo stronger.

    Smashin' stuff Tom - looked at both these tents and tbh the cons of the weight and packing/unpacking of the Soulo was the decider for me as I prefer multi day trails with a light, quick set up/break down tent. The Akto seems surprisingly roomy and it's low profile and multi guylines should give it stability in big wind - I've seen other vids with condensation being a real issue, but, as you mentioned, all tents suffer to differing degrees. keep 'em coming.. atb Sinco

    Excellent video Tom. I have just had my Akto modified to have the ends of the inner tent replaced with mesh. I saw another owner had done this online to give a massive boost to ventilation. Can’t wait to see how it now fares in the next few weeks. The small volume of the tent is a bit prone to condensation so I’m hoping this sorts it. Perhaps adding a 10mm pole as well would make the perfect tent 👌

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 года назад

      Hi Chris, that would make a big difference to the ventilation for sure. Really similar to the Enan then but with stronger fabrics. I am a big fan of the 10mm pole to add stability at a minimum weight penalty. Have a look at my coastal camp video where I compare the Akto and Soulo in 40mph winds. I also show the 9mm and 10 mm pole options on the Akto. ATB Tom

    Thank you for this great review, which is the best I have seen so far ! 👏👏👏
    I've owned an Akto for 10 years and I still consider that it's a very good and reliable tent. But things have change since the arrival of the Enan : noticeably lighter than the Akto, easier to set up with only one little pole at each end, and yet quite solid and sustainable. I'm about to sell my Akto and to buy an Enan (for 3 seasons use) AND I have already bought a Soulo for winter use and/or harsh weather conditions (strong wind or snow : as you say in your review and as I've experimented myself, the Akto isn't very good in winter as the snow settles on both sides of the tent, and a self-supporting tent is much easier to set up too, especially on a snowy ground. I'm very satisfied with the Soulo, which is THE perfect winter tent). I live in Grenoble, in the french Alps, so it's worth spending this amount of money to get a perfect solution for a real 4-seasons use : light package in summer, strong tent in winter. It's always difficult to choose the right tent! I'm 170 cm so the Akto (that I have) is perfect. Never felt that it's too small. Although, I prefer the feeling of being in a tunnel tent, I' wanted to buy a freestanding tent but because im not only short, but also a living skeleton, 2.4 kg for a solo tent is too heavy for me. I'd trust a bit more the Soulo, but the weight and price difference made me buy the Akto...that I do not regret at all! It's a great tent! If Hilleberg will make a yellow label version of the Soulo, I'll think about buying one. But honestly the more I use the Akto the more I realise that it is not just a "it will be good enough", but rather "it's an amazing tent" category.

    Hi Tom.. Absolutely brilliant review, really helpful, thanks. I'm looking at replacing my older Akto as I've used it quite a bit in high UV conditions over the years and I just think maybe for longer more commiting solo trips, a fresh new Akto is the way to go after the fabrics on my current being hammered by UV, but then there's the Soulo! I'm wondering if a double-poled Akto is perhaps a solution for my particular needs, as I already have the extra spare 9mm pole, and I suspect it has better venting options over the Soulo. It would be for hiking/snowshoeing abroad for longer trips. But then again, what about a pyramid shelter? I've heard good things about them in harsh conditions.. and uberlightweight but strong. Decisions decisions - I can't afford any of them yet anyway! 🙂

    Dear Tom,
    I hope this message finds you well. Quality and weight are both essential aspects of Hilleberg tents.
    I wanted to share my experience with my Hilleberg Enan tent, as it is a direct contender to the Akto tent. Living in the UK, I have found it to be reliable even in challenging conditions like close-to-hard winter (snow-free) and windy weather, as well as early spring. To enhance its performance, I have made a few minor modifications that, although slightly affecting the weight, have brought significant advantages.
    Firstly, I replaced all the smaller Y Enan pegs with Hilleberg black label Y-pegs and upgraded the pole from 9mm to 10mm. Additionally, I utilize all the guylines and line runners. In serious windy conditions, I find that using double guylines and line runners where the pole is positioned provides added stability.
    Cheers!

      Hey thank you for sharing your experience of the Enan... Definitely adding guy's really helps as does the 10mm pole... I used a 10 mm Nammatj 2 pole on my Akto pretty much every camp.. The mesh door on the inner just puts me off for my type of camping as it's always very windy where I go. Best wishes Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 The mesh works well for ventilation and avoiding condensation, which is especially helpful in solo tents prone to such issues. I'd recommend it to anyone. Currently, I'm not using the Nammajt 3GT as originally intended since I'm no longer going on snow or winter expeditions. Therefore, I'm seriously considering the Helags as a great option to reduce weight when my wife and son join me from spring to early autumn. For other hikes I use the Enan. Cheers!

    Thanks for the review. Subbed. Have you had any problems with rain entering the Akto top vent when the zip is fully closed? I’d read about users who’d had to apply seam sealant both inside and outside to the top vent zip. I’d also seen a video where strong winds mean that the inner tent fabric billows up and down and touches the sleeper’s face. Those are the only two factors that put me off the Akto.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  2 года назад

      Hi Platypus, thank you for these very relevant comments... I have had no issues with my Akto regarding the top vent but I have also read about a few that have... Regarding the bellow ing of fabric, yes this will happen as only one pole support s a fairly large area of fabric. Only having one pole saves weight but results in more flapping.. The Akto is quite long and I sleep on my side and move down the tent a bit to increase the distance between my head and the fabric.. Keeping fabric taught and using a 10mm pole all helps.. ATVB Tom

    I have seen alot of vids on these tents. But you know your stuff respect to that alot blag there way through. 2 tools for 2 different jobs akto as you said with the 10mm pole will be good wrought for most weather's unless you knowingly going out like I did and it will still stand up to 85.5mph just again as you said more flappy but in that speed the soulo with it being such a tight tent when pitched it becomes a drum effect so there is no winner for noise at silly speeds I got 2 hours sleep that night. But for 600grams I'd prefer the soulo just on the space inside and also in winds pitching is alot easier yes defo slower as there is as mentioned more pegs gullies etc. For the extra weight you get a better living space and a bit extra not much piece of mind that of wind was to pick up you don't have to worry with soulo. • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jim, A footprint is a very personal thing, preference.. Because the fly goes right down to the ground and gives great shelter from wind and rain then the foot print means that you can use all of the space in the vestibule for general living and only need to zip up the inner at night. The waterproof coating on the tent groundsheet is on the tent side so it means that the part that has contact with the ground absorbs dirt and is very hard to remove as it gets ingrained. As the tents are so expensive I don't like mine being dirty even on the underside of the groundsheet. If at any point you decide to sell your tent for something else I think it helps if you have always used it with the footprint. the only downside is the weight which is not that much. I hope this helps. ATB Tom

    Sidenote:
    im walking long treks alone in the mountains and im usually very tired at the end of the day and just want to throw a tent up and sleeeeep.. (i dont care about making food, i bring with me "complete meal energy bars" etc), so im considering to buy the Akto (its also lighter than the Soulo).

      Of Course, the black pole is 10mm x 293cm (213g) on the Hilleberg Website hilleberg.com/eng/tent/tent-accessories/ If you look at the Akto 9mm pole you can see that it is the same length. I bought the pole in addition to the complete tent. I have heard that you can double pole the 9mm and 10mm but there is not enough space for 2 10mm poles. Honestly double poling with 2 10 mm is over kill and I am sure Hilleberg would not recommend it. Hilleberg pair pole diameter and fabric strength for a reason and going way beyond this in modifications is asking for trouble IMO. Thank you for your comments and I hope this helps. ATB Tom

      @TOMHEANEY100  2 года назад +1

      Hi Wille, thank you for your comments. There are a number of points to consider here. I have done this in summer to reduce pack size and weight. Not good for winter though due to the following: Two layers of tent with air space in between makes it warmer, so you can save weight but you will end up crying more insulation to compensate. Two layers also seal out drafts making it warmer too. Condensation and or frost can form on the inner of the outer tent. This will fall or drip directly onto you if you have no inner tent for protection... ATB Tom

    Really enjoyed your video Tom. I am 6' 1" and have been wondering about the length inside and was pleasantly surprised how much space you had at the head end. I have a Lakeland Terrier and go camping with her, so do you think there would be enough room between my sleep mat and the far wall for her to sleep in? Just subbed. Tom, I don’t know if you’ve ever made use of any tarps, but given that both the Akto & the Soulo don’t really have that much vestibule space could you produce a video with using a tarp over both of those tents to add more cover from the rain and just more shelter space in general?

    Interesting Your choice of words on erecting the Soulo. To me it was clear you are not as keen on it. I love my Soulo for the space in poor weather The strength and the fact it doesn't feel like coffin. I am left handed and i love the ease of use for me. The extra weight is not a problem as comfort over compromise for me any day. I managed to put my Soulo in a tight spot on a hill where my mate tried with his Akto. Ok I had to use extra cord to tie round rocks and no pegs were used as no ground to peg. My mate found a more exposed spot, the only one he could manage to put his tent. A fare and constructive review.

      Hi Alan, thank you for your time to comment. If you can manage the weight then the Soulo is the one to go for. I find the Akto not too coffin like due to its length which means you can move down at the feet and have more height at your head if this makes sense.. I love them both to be honest and maybe if I have a hammering from the wind the next time I take out the Akto then I will swing back to favouring the Soulo... Hi Joe, yes the Staika is a decent tent.. but at 4kg you have many options and if you are carrying the tent for a distance in the type of environments these tents are designed for then 4kg is too heavy for most.. Used the Soulo in snow and found condensation was a problem. The solution was to open all vents to the maximum, pitch on an incline (so water drips runs down into the corner) and put your feet-end of the sleeping bag into your rain jacket. Next time I will keep my towel handy to wipe down the inner tent when I wake. Small volume tents are definitely warmer in winter, though you pay with damp kit after two nights use.

    The Akto or the Soulo? The answer might be: the Unna! (Think about it: it offers more inner room than both, pole wise it is just in the middle (two poles), it is lighter than the Soulo, it is sturdier than the Akto, it is totally free standing, just as easy to set up as both, offers 10 cm more inner length than both, etc. I don´t understand we hear so little about the Unna, especially when there is doubt between the Akto and the Soulo?)

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  3 года назад +2

      Yes it could be for sure - On the Hilleberg Owners Group on FaceBook many owners absolutely love the Unna -
      RUclips has far more videos of the Soulo and Akto so that further feeds the popularity of the two. Personal preferences vary so much and that's why Hilleberg make so many tents that weigh almost the same. For me I am 6 foot 1 and don't need the extra length of the Unna, Freestanding also doesn't offer me any significant advantages in the particular areas where I camp. So instead of an Unna for 100g more I would have a Nallo 2 which is just as strong (apart from potential snow on the roof) has more width in the interior and has a vestibule. So it goes on and on. I do love the simplicity of the Unna and when thinking about my next Hilleberg tent I honestly change my opinion nearly every day ha ha as too much to choose from. Thank you very much for your comments on this and my other videos.... ATB Tom

    • @Luuk_M
      @Luuk_M 2 года назад

      The larger interior of the Unna at the expence of a vestibule started to make sense for me this summer. Camping in an Enan with footprint in the Alps, a heavy shower caused a waterflow under the tent. So everything in the vestibule had to move to the inner tent, which made it extremely cramped. The bathtub floor performed very well luckily. Next morning a lot of cleaning awaited me.
      BTW: I also use a 10 mm Nammatj 2 pole in my Enan, and leave the spare pole at home.

    Not really a fair test when you were sat in the vestibules of both. You were sat inside the inner of the soulo whereas you were sat outside the inner of the akto. Fair enough but I did state that I had to move forwards in the Akto and was demonstrating where I would sit to cook in both tents.
