    So much fun. I enjoyed every second! I was gutted I couldn’t get out for a camp myself this week so settled for a cook out in the snow. That is the beauty of RUclips though. You can always count on living vicariously through someone else! So thank you Tom, great camp!

      Hey, thank you for watching and commenting.... Great to hear you enjoyed the video and you at least got out in the snow. The conditions here just couldn't be missed even if the walk in and setting up the tent were far from ideal... But that's the fun and we well well prepared... ATB and I hope you get out real soon... Man, Tom that's a great camp and test of gear if there ever was one. You had a proper Hilleberg tent. Now you know what you got. Really like the green Jannu. I got my green Soulo in this week. I have serious doubts about the last test model holding up. You were safe and could have made it much longer if necessary. Safe inside is good. Hey, I use a whisk boom to sweep off mine some. You want to be careful with the ice and clean the bristles often. What kind of pack are you using? That's got to be a tough hike out with all the drifts. Fun in it's own way. You know you can warm up and dry out when you make it to the ride. Be safe. Some wet days when all that thaws.

      Hi Sam, how are you doing? yeah I really love the new tent. Tension on the inner is amazing and the wind just bounces off it. Very little transfer of the wind to the inner tent so you are really protected from the weather. Definitely felt safe in the tent and no bent poles under the heavy snow load..The pack was the 3FUL Quidan Pro.. It's super light and very practical and very comfortable of single overnighters like this. I had a Granite Gear Blaze 60 which I actually sold in favour of this pack. Not looked back so far.... Tom

      Hey Robin great to hear from you and your thoughts 💭.. I could really feel the pressure on the front zipper from the weight of snow that had built up on the vestibule.. No part of the tent though looked in trouble and it stood very strong.. The guy line points and design really supports the poles. There is a video I think from Eden Adventures showing a North Face Ve25 collapsed under heavy snow loads.. I think the exact location point of the tent relative to the wind and ground is important as Gary's tent had much less snow build up.. We were limited where we could pitch and had to make the best of what we had... Good to hear your thoughts on your own tents... ATB Tom

    Looked like a fun winter snow/winds camp. Nice to top it off with a comfortable night venturing well-prepared, with good decision-making, plus super sunshiny conditions come morning. It appears that hunkering down more protected really increased the drifting over of camp. Temps looked favorable... tho' observation wise, lots of humidity in that snowfall and finer grained spindrifting. It is in conditions like this that I give major considerations concerning the importance of tents with two entrances. One of the forerunners in lineage of the Jannu tent design shape in my view was a now vintage tent by Sierra Designs called Sphynx-2. On today's terms it would still be a viable 3+season, tight 2-person, with vestibule. It was an overall OK tent based on quality, size, weight, rapid set-up/take-down, and simplicity... until you pushed its geometry and dimensions in more demanding uncertainties. In those game-changer ways... it would greatly influence how, where, and to what orientation you'd best hope predict being optimized for extremes. Jannu is obviously a much better more aerodynamic 4-season... however, some of the scenarios in this video look somewhat familiar to ol' days and the Sphynx-2. Glad to see you guys prepared for winter conditions with shovels!!! YES!!! LOL!!! Some might be surprised to see just how often (how many videos out there) on youtubland exhibit ridiculous, unprepared folks total omission of shovels in the middle of winter.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Год назад +1

      Hi, great once again to have your detailed thoughts... A double vestibule tent would have some definite advantages here but the Jannu did great for a single overnighter.. A Keron 3 or Tarra would have been great but I cant carry another kilo of tent.... I had a slightly sheltered spot from the wind but this increased the snow drifting. I knew this would happen and kind of wanted it to to be honest but was surprised at how much snow there was as I never encountered it here before in Northern Ireland. As you say many of the struggles you see on RUclips could have been prevented but few who watch are even aware of this. Its about staking the odds in your favour and having an enjoyable experience not just doing it to get the views on RUclips... I kew from experience to bring my 20yr old spade..... Tom

    I remember in my youth waking up one morning in the Rocky Mountains to find my tent down on my face. I had heavy unexpected snow come in overnight. I remember unzipping the vestibule to have a huge amount of snow fall into the tent. I kicked my way out of the tent and stood up. Damn if there wasn't a person standing in 18 inches of snow fly fishing very near to me. The walkout was challenging due to the snow, trail angles, and the dirt on the trail turning into mud as the snow melted in the afternoon. Life was good during those times. I am now past 70 and foot neuropathy limits where I can walk and how far. I guess I find some solace in watching younger people go out and challenge themselves and thinking of my youth.

I'm really surprised at how well it stood up to being almost buried, that's a great testament to the strength of Hilleberg's kerlon material, tent design and manufacturing. I haven't experienced snow loading in a janna yet but i did have a Salewa Sierra 2 which wasn't a 4 season tent but handled similar conditions to what you had here but in the Pyrenees and it never suffered the amount of condensation that i can see here but i guess it was because it was colder, higher and not as humid .....did you figure out how to pee through the roof vent by any chance :)

Taking into account the pad, sleeping bag and not wanting the bag in contact with the inner. I fear it may be much shorter than the stated 235cm in this regard? Looking forward to the next video!

      Hi Tadhg, great to hear from you and your thoughts on the Jannu. Thankyou for watching many of my videos. Try 200 cm for a real world length IMO... Both ends slope inwards which reduces length front and back.. I am 6 foot 1 inch and its long enough for me though.. If your bag touches the inner that's ok it's just when it then pushes the inner against the outer that moisture gets transferred. The separation here is pretty good so no problems for me at all.... I hope that this helps. All the very best. Tom

    Jesus that's some snow you got. Really buried in. Good there was two up you up there. The wind likely made the snow pack harder against the tents making it harder to dig out as apposed to loose falling snow

      Hi, thank you for your comments.. Yes at one point I thought it had stopped snowing and had no idea just how much it drifted. It is always windy here in Northern Ireland so that's what happens when you get snow too... The snow wasn't too hard as temp just below freezing.. just so much of it. Tom

    Great footage Tom. Looked like an eventful trip. Is there any risk with having enough air for breathing when the tents are covered with that much snow out of interest?

      Hi Richard, I had some vents open at the top and the wind was circulating air. I checked in the middle of the night just to make sure though so very good point... Tom

    Enjoyed your video. You should try a hot tent and using a stove in conditions like this. Your tent failed the snow test, lol but a hot tent would not. I am Canadian my son and I camp year round. Often in -30-40c conditions with torrential snow and wind. The hot tent performs well in these conditions using a hot tent stove to keep us warm and dry.

      Hi Tim great to hear your thoughts and I really appreciate your feedback. .. Many variables here and to be honest I am not capable of carrying another 2 kg in weight or more up a mountain to use a hot stove. I wasn't cold as the temperature was only minis 1 or 2 degrees celsius... When you are out in the conditions that you describe then I totally get it and you can possibly source fuel too which I would also have to carry.... Great to see that you have a RUclips channel with nearly exactly the same amount of subscribers. Couldn't find any videos though of you camping.... ATB Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 hi Tom, yes I understand your situation. You would have to haul more gear/ wood etc and it’s not easy. I harvest wood off the land usually ( occasionally haul it in) as far as my channel. It is a drum channel as I am a professional drummer. I don’t have any camping videos as it doesn’t suit my channel, however; it is something I am considering as I love camping and especially wild and stealth camping. Maybe in the near future I will start filming some camping adventures!

    Hi Tom,
    Newly subscribed to your channel and loving the content/detail you provide on these tents.
    I’m thinking on purchasing a Janu for wild camping in the winter months in Scotland. How do you find the vestibule for cooking in when weather is less than favourable outside?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Год назад

      Hi great to hear from you and your thoughts regarding a Jannu. Vestibule size is a little limited usability wise as its cut very low. For me though using it on my own this is not a problem. its is also very easy to unclip the inner for even more space if needed. I have no problems adapting and making this work... I hope the this helps... All the very best wishes Tom

    'O MY GOD'! was my comment when I read the title of your video. I've been seriously looking at this tent but would use it to it's full potential?
    I was disappointed you didn't stay another night. It would have been interesting to see how you prepared the tent and campground for the next snow. Tom maybe you could say how you might have done this.
    Apologies for the blasphemous comments.

      Hi Marty really great that you are enjoying my videos. There was a slight risk of thaw for the next night and that could have caused problems. I will push so far but not risk equipment damage just for RUclips as I love my kit too much... I really pushed this camp regarding my own health limits and to carry another kilo of food for another night was out of the question. I had experienced the best of it so honestly another night just for RUclips.. No thanks.. Tom
