  • What good is a 4 Season tent if you cannot pitch it in challenging conditions? This video demonstrates a high wind set up of the Hilleberg Jannu on Lukes Mountain, the mountain that has tried to kill all my tents.... The wind speed was accurately measured at 44 mph at the tent, full mountain summit conditions. I hope that you enjoy the video. All the very best wishes Tom

      Hey thank you for the positive feedback.. Yeah I try to film the harder stuff that others don't do . Thank you too for the offer of your Allak.. I am trying not to review too many more Hilleberg tents as I have asked Hilleberg many times for a tent and the reply is they don't have any.. So I feel they have had enough free promotion... If I have a change of heart I will let you know and we can see if it still suits.. I do have a friends Nallo 2 to do at some point too .. Best wishes Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 very true. I also see people use tents outside their design scope, then trash the tent. Not fair. Your reviews are fair and accurate. Your knowledge of tent design adds value to this channel. Its wonderful to see. Ive done so many high wind pitches( Noreasters and tropical storms ) while surf chasing. This video was informative and inspiring. Calm during the chaos. Also very entertaining like the buried in the snow video. Keep em coming and thanks so much for them. Be well.

    Hi Tom.
    Good stuff. I think it is really useful to see tents put up in real time. Often people show themselves starting to put the tent up then cut to them finishing it off. That gives a false impression of it being an easy process! With my Scarp 1 it's a real faff to get the pole through its sleeve and takes a bit of to-ing and fro-ing. There are plenty of other Scarp users who post videos but they rarely show how long it takes to insert the pole!

      Just because lots of people have them shouldn't be a reason not to... It's about what works in the real world.. I have never liked being mainstream myself and tried many smaller brands to give them a chance.. BUT shelters like tents first and foremost it's protection from the harsh elements that is most important to me and few other tents with the reputation of Hilleberg... When you pitch those tents in the Swiss Mountains and you have to take care of yourself and Husky's you really come to the simple conclusion that all that matters is protection and reliability.
      Every single Hilleberg I've ever owned was from 2nd hand after weeks or moths of searching and for a fair price.
      I love my Jack Wolfskin tents and all the other brands that I had or still own.
      But with Hilleberg tents I literally crossed desserts on this planet, conquered Islands and took them on MTB-Trips all over Europe
      I'm Personally a Big fan of the Nammatj 3GT and the Soulo red label.

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1 Год назад +1

      @TOMHEANEY100 If they were £600 Tom, I would buy one tomorrow. As it is £1100, is just way overpriced. I expect you to disagree, but the price is not justified when compared to other offerings especially for typical UK use. The expedition market may be different, but when you look at high altitude camps in Alaska and the himalayas, offerings by The North face and mountain hardwear feature strongly.

    Great vid Tom. Very much enjoyed. They call me the breeze. That's what people need to see. If you experience real life you very well may encounter these conditions and maybe much worse. Sleet, freezing rain, snow or thunder and lightning can provide a danger element to the mix. So one needs to know and understand how to accomplish safety and security for survival in all conditions. Knowledge is power and so are winds like you practiced in. Look forward to viewing the other vid. Good to see you and your bud again.

      Hi Mark I have owned both and had out out in similar conditions.. Its a tough one.. The BL Soulo would have the edge I think due to stronger fabrics and less tent volume with the same poles.. I feel though the Jannu would run it close. If the wind hits slightly side on here from the front then the Jannu gets extra support from the Brow pole. In fact the lower position of this brow pole helps combat the extra size of the Jannu... I dont own a BL Soulo so would need to borrow to do a comparison but there is an idea that could work.... So curious if you both had 10mm poles for this video? 70km/hr is at the upper end of normal pitching conditions and we often find a form of shelter like stone wall, or dig into the snow, which reduces the wind shear area significantly and reduce overall flex. But I guess the acid test is whether the tent stayed up all night and didn't get damaged...It was great to see a Jannu being used in typical expedition-like conditions and I hope this goes to the top of the table for RUclips Jannu reviews! Cheers and thanks again.

      Looking at them both, the Jannu is a semi geodesic dome and the Macpac is a 3 pole tunnel tent, the Jannu will be stronger against side winds and be less dependant on pitching direction. I think the Macpac isn't free standing? So you'll need to make sure it's guy'ed out really well.

      Hi the Macpac is a great tent I am sure as it has 3 poles supporting the structure... This makes it less flappy.. Have looked at Macpacs many times but just not as popular here in the UK... These Jannus need guyed out too that's for sure... Hey thank you for the comments and sharing your thoughts.. All the very best wishes Tom

A comparison video will be up tomorrow night regarding pitching orientation (Vestibule or tail into the wind). I appreciate your viewing wishes for this one to go to the top... Hope all well in NZ and great to hear of your tent choice and experience.. All the very best wishes.. Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks Tom, I watched your vestibule verses foot end into the wind and also Hilleberg have a video on RUclips showing how vestibule into the wind is the stronger option. The Jannu has many advantages over the Macpac Olympus like interior space and durability, and side-wind strength as you pointed out, so for us it's definitely the Jannu with regular supplied poles in red colour for alpine use. thank you for helping us cinch this decision!

    Morning from Australia Tom. Am i right in saying these tents with external poles are easier to pitch in these canditions as you clip the tent upwards rather than trying to stand the tent up whole? Also i noted the pole at the vestibule end looked kinked. Is that “factory”? Great vid

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Simon, absolutely as you are building from the ground up and the tent is not exposed and remains with a low profile.. It does however take a bit more time and is a little fiddly BUT will practically allow you to pitch in any conditions. Inner first pitch tent are very vulnerable until completely set up and this is a real practical problem with manufactures ignore and never show you how to do in challenging conditions..... Yes the vestibule or brow pole has a bent section in the middle from the factory... I hope this helps.. best wishes Tom

    Thanks Tom, very interesting. Question: Why vestibule into the wind seems concerned intuitive?

    • @garynesbitt5078
      @garynesbitt5078 Год назад +2

      Hi Marty. There are a few reasons for vestibule into wind. Firstly it’s a much easier set up as the wind keeps the front arc pole in particular seated in the pole sleeve. Rear into wind and the force of the wind actually unseats the arc pole which makes set up more difficult. Also on this tent the vent cover blows away from the tent roof vestibule into wind. This helps with clipping the fly to the poles. If rear into wind the vent cover flaps over the roof creating an obstruction when trying to clip poles. Also the flapping vent ends up tangling the guy lines which can be very messy. Also the tent is structurally much stronger vestibule into wind given the arc pole bracing the longitudinal poles and the guying configuration. This way the vestibule takes the brunt of the wind force and the inner is more isolated from wind loading. Rear into and the inner can suffer deformation. Pitching this way goes against conventional rule of thumb but is actually also recommended by Hilleberg. Long winded (excuse the pun) response but I knew this topic would get the most queries ! Sorry for high jacking your channel Tom lol. Cheers. Gary

      @@TOMHEANEY100 surely when you open the zip to get into the tent that would cause issues. If it was not just wind but snow hail rain the tent and contents, they would all enter the tent with obvious results. Snow drift would block the exit also

      @@superbadiii4856 look that is fine I get it but under mad conditions strength has to take priority and it's stronger from the front.. You have to manage the other drawbacks. I think the cut off wind speed wise is about 50mph.. It is a tough one.. Wind alone then I have tried and managed no worries in 60mpg.. But snow and spindrift would again be more challenging
