  • In Search Of 60 - My Hardest Camp - Hilleberg Jannu. My quest to camp in measured 60mph winds. The highest wind speed I have recorded before when camping was 58mph so tonight I had out with my strongest tent in a mad forecast too try and record the magic 60mph...
    I must addd that I am very familiar with the location and have a plan A, B, and C. I am very well accustomed to this type of camping and it's well within my experience level. Many other precautions have been taken and considered before this camp.

    This is why you can trust Tom's reviews and recommendations, he doesn't just pitch a tent and call that a review. It's videos like this, and how Tom presents himself, that make it my favourite channel

      Hey thank you for your kind words.. really good to hear... I try hard to bring real world tests to the table as I always learn something from this type of pressure and not many other videos show the true wind speed and limits of tents... I also do enjoy this type of camping and find it exciting with the wind hammering the tent and me inside. I do additionally try to demonstrate best practice apart from pitching on a summit when there are sheltered options available ha ha. But its the summits where I want to be as I am pretty much guaranteed to be on my own on a night like this... best wishes Tom

Carried up extra pegs for it too and now have pitched it again in my spare room and check on it every 5 mins to see if its ok... I have also used Hilleberg tents extensively in similar conditions and they stood strong.. All wind ward pegging points were triple staked so no chance of a peg coming loose.. Brought 10 mm poles instead of 9.. Also had extra guy lines if needed.. Additionally I chatted on the phone with my friend Gary who has had his Jannu out in similar with no problems.. So was very chilled out and enjoyed it and can't wait to get back for more . Tom

Very impressive that you made the effort to be there in those conditions, the tent coped well (thanks to your meticulous pitching, no doubt!) and that you actually managed to get some sleep! But I was able to take my time and just build the tent from the ground up... I think Hilleberg are grateful but they know that I am a fan and will continue to test their tents for free so why would they sponsor me from a business point of view..There are many other Hilleberg tents that I could borrow to test but I honestly am not rushing to do that, due to the fact that they have declined sponsorship on 3 occasions after featuring very positively their tents in over 20 videos.. Hopefully we will both get out in conditions like this some day... best wishes Tom

    Hello Tom, A great test for the Hilleberg tent. Ourt bush line here in my area of NZ goes up to 1200m and when I go above it into alpine areas, it is very exposed, and I have had to bail when the wind has almost torn the tent out of the ground. but thankfully I have the refuge of the bush to run to. I felt every blast of the wind around your tent as I have been in that situation so many times. The weather can change in a blink of an eye here. I liked the way you kept your composure and talked calmly through the video. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Yeah it’s a real bugbear of mine too. I am pretty sure my Quasar failed in 50mph winds (the flysheet pulling forward towards the wind and acting like a massive scoop and then just vertical wall connected to the inner) so when I see people talking about camping out in 80mph or even 100mph winds it just sounds ridiculous to me! Basically if the wind is over 40mph most tents are in trouble, if its over 50 only the very best tents will survive. Perhaps the one caveat to that (having seen some campgrounds levelled in Iceland before) is very low and tiny 1-man tents, which can be cheap and very storm resistant, I just wouldn’t want to stay in one!

    • @TOMHEANEY100

      @@alexnail Hi Alex, great to hear your thoughts... Yes as you can see on the Jannu the fly is also deforming and stretching to then act like a scoop in 60mph winds.. My Quasars also did this even more as there was no way of securing the fly to the poles and the wind just pulled it forwards.. So I totally agree once the winds get over 40 lots of tents will struggle. Then 50 it's even tighter as this is almost a 20 percent increase. When it gets to 60 then few will survive.. Here though as I have another spare 10mm pole I will check the section lengths and then possibly swop out the bent sections so the pole is 100 percent... I prefer the short pole sleeves and clips of the Hilleberg system which allows you to build the tent from the ground up as you see here. I generally try to demonstrate best practice and failing to pitch a tent in windy conditions like this and showing it on video is just not what I want to get across to my viewers. I would be cautious and take the time to develop my trust by exposing them to gradually stronger winds. I have 2 hillebergs, The Kaytum 2, Keron GT 3 and formally the Jannu that I gave to my son. As far as I am concerned, based on the incredible experience that he went through with the Jannu and my own experience with winds over 60 mph, I would say that the Hilleberg tents are quite a fortress and i have absolute trust in their capacity to keep me safe in horrendous conditions but I think that i will take time to proof the Samaya in bad weather also, simply because I have a good feeling about them. If I would have to choose, I would for now use one of my hillebergs in horrendous conditions but I will take the time to test and develop trust in my Samaya's, with gradual high winds exposure, because i think that they are great and I am confident that they have been tested by professional in high winds.

    Great video Tom, not sure it’s best to have the door facing the wind, as when the door is opened the wind comes in and puts stress on the seams from the air pressure. I totally get it that this goes against the grain but you just need to be careful getting in and out of the tent. Hi Ashley, yes I have.. Suits me better as one person but as a two person tent then the Nammatj has much more space... The Nammatj still has the nice stronger fabric and fast to set up and manage in conditions like this..Very easy to double pole too if needed or wanted. Hi Tom, it’s almost a year from this review of the Jannu, would you still recommend it as the best 2 man tent?
    I’ve returned to watching your videos on it as I’m thinking of buying one.
    Cheers and ATP Jim.👍

      Hi Jim, awesome to hear you are thinking of something like this.. As a two man tent for one person definitely the Jannu.. But for two I'd probably prefer the Nammatj.. It is easier to pitch, double pole if necessary, much more spacious, more durable fabric, at the small cost of being a bit flappy and noisy in higher winds.. I hope that helps and makes sense.. best wishes Tom

    In my opinion, the vestibule just shouldn't bow that low under high winds. This brand specializes in high wind tents, they should have designed it better than that.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  4 месяца назад +2

      Yes I had it pulled very tight too.. You lose all workable vestibule space.. BUT when the winds reach that speed I don't know any tent that will do much better.. Thank you for the comment.. best wishes Tom

    Why did you choose to put the entrance vestibule windward when Hilleberg recommend this should be leeward? You have clinically examined the pros and cons of this (edit: in many of your videos) much to your credit. I would go so far as to say you an authority on Hilleberg. But to put your vestibule into the fray? You are not losing it are you mate?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  23 дня назад

      "Every design has its advantages. The one entrance / one vestibule option makes the design lighter compared to options with two vestibules and 2 entrances. Wind can always push against the tent and fabric affecting the space on the inside. For this reason, we do recommend to pitch the tent with the vestibule against the wind to prevent the rear end to be pushed against your feet” This is directly from Hilleberg.. Don't know where you get the idea that Hilleberg recommended leeward.. I would honestly be interested to see or hear... Thank you for the comment and challenge maybe I have got it wrong but they do recommend vestibule into the wind on many of their tents when it gets serious.. I personally feel the cut off is about 50mph. Tom

    I'll stick my neck out on the line. I thought tail into wind was better on previous side by side test. that vestibule bashing around like a shipwreck annoys me. irrespective of Hilleberg advice.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  11 месяцев назад

      Yes it's not totally cast in stone but in winds above 50 mph it would be my choice.. The vestibule absorbed the wind here and very little was transferred to the inside.. I feel too if the tent took damage and it had been pitched as recommended by Hilleberg then they are more likely to stand over the repair.. It does take practice and getting used to I will certainly admit.. Hey I appreciate hearing your thoughts 💬...best wishes Tom

    Great stuff. Re your recent video about Durston - I bought one of their tents for a summer camp in the high Pyrenees. In some fierce but not crazy gusts, it collapsed. I left it in a mountain hut, and I'm back to Hillebergs. This kind of dependability is precious.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Год назад

      Hi, yes I rate the tents weather resistance as my number one priority because if you regularly camp in mountain environments then sooner or later it's going to throw up high winds even when not forecast.. I feel it's important for people to understand realistically what a particular tent can handle regarding weather resistance... There are many false claims out there and then people buy the tent and get caught out.. I think Durston gear are now saying the X Mid is a 3 season tent and I am totally happy with that. Hey thank you for sharing your experience.. best wishes Tom
