I saw Ayers perform this in Canterbury around 1971. He was accompanied by an unknown teenager called Mike Oldfield, who played staring at the floor throughout.
I had the luxury of seeing Kevin live several times and each time it was a luxury. "Luxury" is a word which I have just come up with within the context of this comment in describing Kevin's gigs. I hope he would approve of its use. I missed him when he died
This little clip (when repackaged for the US market in the late 70s) was my introduction to Mr. Ayers. Only able to catch a live show once - didn't get to my part of the US much. Good thing for me was: the way my tastes ran back then, if the piano didn't explode, I probably wouldn't have given him a second listen.
I saw him do this at the Rainbow he got a bouquet and if my poor old memory serves me well i seem to recall a guitarist dressed as a bee suspended in mid air playing a rock and roll rift, help me someone 🤣
The guitarist was likely to have been Kevin's frequent collaborator, Ollie Halsall. I saw Ollie dressed as a bee at the Black Swan in Sheffield when he played there with Patto.
Great scott! I want to sing that on America's most wanted or I mean America's most best singer stuff like that I can do it I think I can I think I can like the train that could I challenge any singer in the world Kevin Harris is great but I suck Kevin Ayers was great but great Scott sucks when I have to call Elton John to help south.
I am the real great scott!. I can sing it better than Kevin this song was written in the 1930s where is Richard sinclair? Anyways Great Scott out beam me up Scotty!
This performance is close to my heart from the '70s. I was drawn to the music of Kevin Ayers then and now!
Amazing this song suits him so well.
One of a kind. Miss him

I like this version much more. More upbeat.

Is that David Icke on the introduction panel??
And is that Andy Williams?
I hope the champagne was real - and wasn't flat
Damon Albarn's dad
Damon's teacher... I think he got a lot from Kevin
Andy Williams on the panel? for Kevin Ayers ?...that is truly surreal. He doesn't make that good a Marlene Dietrich to be honest..
Anything The Who can do.........
