    I love all sorts of music - classical , opera , rock, folk etc but for me Peter Hammill is the one who really does it. Been listening to his work since 1974. His songs turn me, a world weary 69 year old, into an emotional wreck! A lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and a melting heart. This is exceptional.

    Peter Hamill wrote and performed some excellent songs and tunes with his voice, his guitar and his keyboards. An amazing musical genius. And his group, Van der graaf Generator made some excellent albums too.

    I saw PH sing this at the Wigmore Hall in October 1973. It was the last song in the set and the lights dimmed as he sang it. He did Refugees as an encore and forgot the words and members of the audience had to help him out. Strangely enough, I was sat next to Robert Fripp!

    It's not easy on the ear, it's not that melodic, it's wordy, it's exhausting, it's roughly bashed-out piano work. But it is colossal genius. No one has even been like this except Peter Hammill. Exhilarating.

    • @written12
      @written12 8 лет назад +8

      Gary Spencer
      I'd say it's wordy but it manages to stay on the artistic side of prolix. I think it works because of the way he declaims at times and then lets loose with the shouts and wails. Also, his word choices are often striking.

    • @AlbertoVO5
      @AlbertoVO5 6 лет назад +5

      Gary Spencer Nicely put. In quite simple language, you've captured the essence of Hammill,s performances as well as anything more complex could.

    I saw VDGG live 3 times when I was a student in Manchester in the late 70s. The first time was on a rainy night at Manchester Opera House. Some of us queued to go backstage to meet the band. I briefly talked to Hugh Banton, got the band's autographs, and took one or two B/W Polaroids of the band. I took one of Peter Hammill; it developed before our eyes and I showed it to Peter - who laughingly said to his bandmates: "I really look manic there!". And he did!

    This song is originally from PH's second solo album, "Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night", which would've been new when this video was made. VdGG had just gone on hiatus for three years, although at the time it was unknown if they would reconvene.
    I believe this is the first time I've seen PH perform solo with a real piano! It's so much more expressive and rich than the electric ones he usually has to use.

    I promise you, I won't leave a clue:
    No tell-tale remark, no print from my shoe
    Still, a steady trail to the water's edge...
    I will keep my pledge to the end:
    I intend to go free
    No more rushing around, no more travelling chess;
    I guess I'd better sit down, you know I do need the rest....
    Yes, it's time to resign with equanimity and placidity
    From the game
    I can't explain;
    I can't relate....
    Have I done it all too late?
    Now is the time for the commission to report;
    Till lately, I thought I'd been planted
    Trying hard to make it all come real
    Permission to feel is ungranted
    But now it's happening I'd like to keep it private if I can;
    Last words, last looks, make a final stand
    Now my number's come up on the Pools
    I guess I'll board the Titanic for a cruise....
    Now is the time to make my status clear
    Too late, I fear, and lonely
    As friends and enemies traverse the stage;
    All in a rage disown me
    And all the pit-props shatter into dust about my ears:
    Memory and conscience, hope and fear
    As I crawl out further on the limb
    Something tells me I am crawling
    In to unknown prophecies and lives
    The rainbow's end is hemmed around with knives....
    As I stand on the boards and the stage lights grow dim
    Shall I go out of doors, or shall I maybe go in?
    Have I reached the point when I should take my cue
    And follow you and your signs?
    I can't remember my lines
    As the prompter cat-calls
    And the cards all fall
    In the strike
    All the pages are thin, all the corners are curled
    Does the starshine fall in through my window on the world?
    Or am I living out (the seeds of doubt) a chronicle of revenge?
    The willow bends
    As do my hands;
    Do you understand?
    And will you still be my friend in the end?
    When my mouth falls slack
    And I can't summon up another tune
    Shall I then look back and say
    I did it all
    Too soon?

      ¿Lo he hecho demasiado tarde?
      Ahora es el momento de que la comisión informe;
      Hasta hace poco, pensaba que me habían plantado.
      Intentando hacer que todo se vuelva real,
      El permiso para sentir no está garantizado.
      Pero ahora está sucediendo, me gustaría mantenerlo privado si puedo;
      Últimas palabras, últimos looks, toma una posición final.
      Ahora mi número aparece en las Piscinas,
      Supongo que abordaré el Titanic para un crucero ...
      Ahora es el momento de aclarar mi estado,
      Demasiado tarde, me temo, y solo,
      Como amigos y enemigos atraviesan el escenario;
      Todos en un arrepentimiento me desheredan.
      Y todos los puntales se rompen en polvo alrededor de mis oídos:
      Memoria y conciencia, esperanza y miedo.
      A medida que me arrastro más lejos en la extremidad
      Algo me dice que me estoy arrastrando
      En profecías y vidas desconocidas
      El final del arcoiris está rodeado de cuchillos ...
      Mientras estoy de pie en las tablas y las luces del escenario se vuelven débiles,
      ¿Debo irme al aire libre, o debo entrar?
      ¿He llegado al punto en el que debería seguir mi ejemplo?
      Y te sigo a ti y a tus signos?
      No puedo recordar mis líneas
      Como las llamadas de gato prompter
      Y todas las cartas caen
      En el ataque.
      Todas las páginas son delgadas, todas las esquinas están curvadas.
      ¿La estrella del universo cae a través de mi ventana en el mundo?
      ¿O estoy viviendo (las semillas de la duda) una crónica de venganza?
      Las curvas de sauce
      Como lo hacen mis manos;
      ¿Lo entiendes?
      ¿Y seguirás siendo mi amigo al final?
      Cuando mi boca se queda floja
      Y no puedo convocar otra canción,
      ¿Debo mirar hacia atrás y decir
      Lo hice todo
      ¿Demasiado pronto?

    I was at this gig aged 15 … also saw them at the roundhouse the following April, supported by the Spiders From Mars (minus Bowie & Ronson) and the 101ers, fronted by the soon to leave and form The Clash, Joe Strummer.

    Peter Hammill music, and his way of performing it, is very demanding stuff. Obviously it includes what he did with VDGG. I am a big prog fan and for me the Peter Hammill's world was the hardest to get into, but one of the most rewarding once the price of entry was paid through several listenings without immediate rewards, until the barrier is broken and you get into it. You need to get accostumed to so many things that are not easy to grasp at first. That being said, I discovered this world when I was 18 and still a relatively unexperienced listener. All that to say that the relative lack of commercial success of Hammill never surprised me. It is demanding, deep and often dark.

    Paradoxical, Great Peter Hammill : "I can't explain, I can't relate.... Have I done it all too late?"... "Shall I then look back and say I did it all too soon?". Thanks...

    Wow...or really if I’m being honest like Peter....FUCK YEAH! Why isn’t Peter Hammill a household name like, well, all those other guys and gals who people write articles about in fuckwad magazines. Whatever, Hammill is and remains that rare combo of poet and musician who, gasp, actually is interested in creating art without other considerations. As I write this Hammill’s new album, From the Trees, has just been released. Buy it!

    Pour moi la plus belle voix du Rock anglais ! Beaucoup trop méconnu et jamais plébiscité par les radios françaises. Et ces mêmes radios françaises continues à nous distiller leurs soupes de variétés merdiques depuis des décennies !!
