11:11 When I tell people about why blender is so different as a piece of software, this is usually one of the first thing I bring up. There is so much professional-level creative software now that never gives any thought to optimization. It's not sexy or exciting, and the high-level giant studios can always afford to put some more money into hardware when things start slowing down. Blender bothering to prioritize optimization with new versions keeps the software better accessible to smaller studios, home contractors and just straight-up hobbyists who are running on less-powerful hardware. Just thinking of all the people who are able to start their careers in their bedrooms or kitchen tables on little potato-computers or people who get to start making things because they like making them is what makes me go from describing Blender as something cool and useful to something that's capital-I Important. Great video, great software, thanks to everyone for all their hard work. It changed my life, and I know I'm not the only one.
Isn't editing giant mehses in Blender still much more laggy than in Maya or Max? I remember discussion a few years ago that it would require architectural rewrite.
Blender's biggest super power is the teams constant and unrelenting improvements and innovation. Blender is rarely stagnant. I love seeing these improvements and upgrades. So exciting!
I'd say the biggest super power is that blender isn't afraid of ditching deprecated functionality risking pissing off long time users. Other programs keep decades old functionality that is far, far gone in usefulness because a handful of anachronistic users still don't want it gone. Blender goes like: "Yea, well, deal with it and go with the times. Or use old versions." Which keeps the program fresh. Like with geo nodes. The first implementation was definately rushed, so they threw out a lot of that. You can't use 2.9 geo node trees in 4.2 blender.
Wow, Blender 4.2 is packed with features! I especially loved the new Geometry Nodes additions, like the Realize Instances node and the matrix nodes. It's amazing how Blender is constantly evolving and becoming more powerful. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Geometry Nodes, and I'm sure we'll see some incredible creations using these new tools. Thanks for the detailed overview, Jonathan and Harry! Keep up the great work!
That geometry nodes presentation was something different. I can't even. Makes me believe in humankind again. Blender stands for everything we need more of in the software universe. Thank you to everybody involved for your amazing efforts.
Harryblends' node presentation was super, super satisfying to watch. That was some top-shelf stuff! (Though I do have to admit frowning when he used depreciated instead of deprecated. Made me think of my car payments.)
Y'know when Blender gets a huge update like this, I watch videos like these and think "How the heck am I gonna remember this though?" But this time, a BUNCH of stuff just feels so intuitive that you'll either pleasantly notice it, or it'll feel like it's always been there. That's exciting! The add-on updating tool seems absolutely incredible though. That was one of my biggest frustrations with add-ons! This update is AWESOME.
@@PabloVazquez Woah hey there, Pablo! 👋 You're right! After just a little bit of time using it, that's *exactly* how 4.2 feels. More "speed-of-thought" and consistent than ever. What I would love to see is a series of native or included extensions that are based on modeling production workflows with UV's, naming conventions and other pipeline things that some may benefit from. If you know of any good addons for this type of thing I'd love to hear about them!
Definitely an amazing upgrade. One thing I've been waiting for a long time is that we can finally have the option to group objects like in all 3D software. Definitely the collections are good for organizing objects, but when animating it is very nostalgic to have the option to create a group of objects which animate as one, it would save a lot of time. If it could be added it would help us a lot in our animation flow.
I cannot be the only person who struggled for more than an hour trying to figure out what happened to the "Blend Mode" section after their Blender version auto-updated when they haven't touched the software in a couple of months. But it turned out the reason I was particularly struggling is that the scene I was editing had doubled materials in most places, so even after I went in and fixed the alpha mapping, I would see no change because there was a duplicate underneath that had a different almost identical material that I hadn't changed. rip.
Redone EEVEE is getting too similar to cycles! When tried a simple animated scene with basic cubes casting shadows on each other - Shadows are noisy and jittery while playing the animation. Adding Raytracing on top causes even more noise and the denoising doesn't quite work (changing a method to Ambient Occlusion still keeps the shadows ugly). Every small change in the samples of the shadows - freezes Blender for many seconds. So essentially - new EEVEE is slower and worse. I was using EEVEE not to get photorealistic light simulation (there is CYCLES for that!) but because it approximated light beautifully and FAST without any noise. Its main advantage laid in the animation - you could run complex scene with high FPS due to how well it was optimized. It also had a lot of customizable features which are now essentially gone. Please, keep an option to use the old EEVEE in the 4.2 version.
This update has me saying "Thank god. Thank god. Thank god" at the monitor whenever a change is mentioned. Texture displacement in Eevee though? Ohhhh yeaaaaaahhhhhhh!
Not sure if this is 4.2 new but you can drag and drop add ons zip files in the viewport and replace old add on but keep perferences. Thata was so easy updating all add ons now
Blender 4.2 seems to be indeed a massive improvement. Finally some of the most basic features the industry uses for ages, start to become available for the masses. Yes I sound ironic, blender is awesome but it is still dragging along after everyone else because it tries to do everything. A good thing for individuals and small teams, a bad thing to be a head to head competition aside of autodesk - and even there if you know the tools in and out, it's hard going to blender even with the same knowledge, it is hard to ignore the amount of convenience when I also don't need to care about the money spend. Still love blender, wish you the best and seeing you all improving it so much is awesome. Now make the license non viral but still open source and third party software would start to actively use you instead of mostly working around.

Etc. Hopefully this extension thing will sort that out. Can I save my settings so they will carry over to 4.2 please?
Hopefully this is a one time thing, but I have to browse for all the "included" addons (like add extra curve objects and sun position). It's gonna take bloody forever.
