    Ben talking about Mo having to get his ladies to lie down had me laughing thinking back to when I was preschool age and my "hotdog dog" Oscar was trying to get the neighbor's Saint Bernard Ms. Beatrice to "give him a piggyback ride." I told my folks how funny it was and the neighbor, who was not at all amused. (AKC show dog) Those were some strange puppies with hairy jowly dachshund bodies and littermates that were long-legged, sleek-haired, and sharp-faced mini bernards 50-75lbs as adults. They turned out to be so cute people wanted to buy them and the neighbor would afterward invite Oscar to come over to play now and then. 😉

    turkey chicks especially are fragile for sure. I like what "just a few acres" does and only water availble for first 3 hours then give food. He said it has made huge difference in mortality.

    I believe you have to run a sprinkler on the trees to save them from the frost. It’s the continuous forming of ice that keeps the plant from freezing. Thermo dynamics. Hope this helps someone.

    The best protection against losing an external hard drive to failure (and its data) is a RAID 5 array. There's quite a few options from the big names in the market, but essentially it splits up the data across multiple drives with redundancy, meaning if one drive fails you still can access the data and after replacing the failed drive restore the redundancy again to it.

  • @stephaniewilson3955
    @stephaniewilson3955 4 месяца назад +4

    Poor Ben! This is why you back-up to at least 2 destinations.

    • @theElderberryFarmer
      @theElderberryFarmer 4 месяца назад

      Using a NAS is also a good move. I use TrueNAS Core and build out machines with 5 hard drives used for data. The array configuration I use will survive the loss of 2 of the hard drives without losing any actual data. This gives you an opportunity to replace a failed drive without real impact (other than the cost of a new drive and a couple hours' work).
      I use 2 TrueNAS machines for my data - a primary and a backup. They are both in the same building (not ideal), but it's better than nothing. Once I get around to having a detached garage put up at my place, I'll move one of them out to it.
      Take care and God Bless.

    We bought 15 acres and run an organic plant nursery on 4 of it, have orchards (fruit, nut and berries) on 2 acres but in different parts of the property, have large shelter belts surrounding each layer of the land.
    This property had one old orchard on it originally but we have put micro orchards everywhere and are replacing the older/dying trees on site.
    Each orchard gets different fruit set as they all have their own microclimates.
    We honestly have about 120 standard fruit trees, about 80 nut trees, 10 avocado trees, at least 60 odd berry bushes and canes.
    Because of the uncertainty of fruitset around our house I have set up 18 dwarf fruit trees (peach, pear, nectarine, apricot) and 30 odd citrus, 12 banana plants, papaya, pawpaw, grapes, kiwifruit, passionfruit ...
    We do get frosts but our climate is mild, even though we are a cool mountain zone.
    We live 20 minutes from a ski field but also 20 minutes from the beach.
    There's 8 acres for animals but in reality it ends up being six as the 2 acres over the river, we cannot get stock there easily so we are going to reforest it, with native trees as that appeals to my heart.
    We have a river, a swamp, a winter stream, we are running our own business and we are slowly getting ourselves into community sufficiency, you know where we all get sufficient in something and swap/trade/exchange for that we cannot do.
    Husband relief milks to pay the mortgage and to bring us home milk to make cheese and butter.
    One day we will have house cows but man we got a delapidated property we are refencing, replacing and rebuilding sheds, shade houses, tunnel houses, gotta resort the water supply ...
    But looking back on how far we have come in the last 3ish years, we will get my milking cows. And sheep. Maybe a couple of goats so my soap can have goats milk in it.
    We do have beefies, we have chickens, turkeys and kunekunes to keep the grass low in the big orchard.
    This lifestyle is big, its busy and its full.
    Sometimes its disheartening.
    Especially as we started it at 48 and 49.
    But, we want it, we are learning, we are getting there, adapting, failing, fixing, failing, learning quickly.
    All that to say, we are all here learning alongside you all and we see you.
    Thanks for always keeping it real and not hiding the hard parts.

    I am so far behind in watching your podcasts guys! I don't know if I'll ever got caught up. I'm finally watching this when it's already Spring! It sounds like you really enjoyed the SRI Equipment Festival Al. I can understand you wanting to look for a tractor Jason. I think Ben is happy he has a tractor. Body bag trees! Too bad some of the trees didn't do well in places Ben. Weather is a problem for all of us just like you guys. Cool, cellar space. Root cellar under the house? That would be great and free up some space in the house for living by having food storage downstairs. I'm glad the building inspector is a nice guy. Yup, the animals coming into the barn at Al & Gina's place won't have to be there very long until it's time for them to come back out. Mud season! I bet you guys have lots of camera problems. Too bad about the hard drive that croaked on you Jason! I like hearing the peepers at night. Too bad you have dogs visiting your property Jason. I'm glad you've got a lot of your fence up. I'm so glad your friend Mike is helping you. It has to be hard to manage all the breeding of the pigs on the homesteads. Moe for Moe'r pigs! I hope your IPPs work out for you Al. I hope the AI takes for Azalea Al. Too bad it didn't work for you Ben. Meat birds on the homestead Jason and layer chicks. There's a lady near me that says to give the chicks scrambled eggs when they are little to help them stay alive. I bought a Chicklift because of you Jason. Yes, it's hard to get away from the farm to do a film "shoot" at the Chicklift factory/farm in Texas. Thanks for this podcast guys! I finally got through it!
