Well really scary I have just turned 80 and when I have to tell people this I say "Do not hold this against me, I have no idea how this happened?" My husband just passed last summer the saddest time of my life You are all such a blessing to me I forget my age listening to you. I hear my boys and husband talking about knives and tools Don't go away . I really wanted to see the eclipse but only have my truck so the next one is much too far off so will see it from a different location Have a wonderful week my friends.

Good morning from Southern Ontario Canada, we had a 97% eclipse and it was an experience i will never forget. We never got total darkness, just looked like a big rain storm was coming. I was sitting in our backyard on the steps watching it all and as the eclipse started to recede our back yard was half very dusky and the other side bright sunshine straight down the middle of our yard. The sky is an amazing universe, every day it change`s and night time is another world. I won't be here for the next total eclipse but our children and grandchildren will see one more in their life time. Amazing day last Monday.

Ok guys you left me laughing with a clear picture of you three as Old Garden Gnomes running through the woods.😅😅😅. So as you were comparing yourselves with the stages you're parents have been through that so resonated with me both parents now gone. I laugh with you and enjoy the talks you have and if you think 40 or 50 is OLD I'm 70! Be strong and continue to do even when there will be times you don't want too. I've always had moments in the midst of projects and my self talk is to stop or put it off for another day BUT when those thoughts come I use that as a signal to push through. We're human but for me the sense of satisfaction knowing I had to push myself is wonderful.
I give much of that attitude to my driven parents who set my example or the bar HIGH. Thanks Mom and Dad. Keep it up guys it's never the destination but the journey and what an exciting journey it is.
Jason kudos for pushing yourself to write and if it is as you do on RUclips you will do Great just a fun guy doing and living his dream.
Thanks guys there is a chuckle in my heart today.

Hello Guys, speaking of mowing, I have mowed “The Lawn” twice and I had to mow my bigger pasture ( about 3/4 of an acre) today. We’re just slowly, slowly getting started and only have two kunes to manage grass. West Tennessee can grow some grass, I’m having trouble holding the breaks on getting too many animals to overwhelm the land and my ability to care for those animals in the manner that they deserve which is a common denominator with y’all and us. With fingers crossed 🤞 and all goes well, I will be adding chickens to eat some grass and follow my pigs. I heard a RUclips channel called The Modern Yeoman and he always says “Slowly, Slowly” I take inspiration from all of you and combine something that fits for us. Thank you 🙏 all for what you take the time to share with others that helps overcome hurdles even if you can’t jump. Bill and Cate, 40 Shades of Green Farm

Man, I just cannot possibly believe how very much I love and look forward to these "Friday Special" podcasts from you three guys whose channels I watch!! Please, y'all take a moment and just ponder what great vibes you are spreading among those of us out in the hinterlands.
I try to imagine what it would be like to have y'all get together in person and host a "hang with the guys" mini-conference so that we could sit at table and listen to y'all talk.
On another topic, I join the other viewers/subscribers (I wish that EVERY viewer would be a subscriber!!) who wish that y'all could bring on other members of your family. For example, we'd love to hear from the three wives. Also, I think it would be major cool for you to put your children on an episode or two and let them talk about what it's like to be reared on a homestead. In my mind's eye, I imagine Olivia talking about when she used to go inside the "chicken hut" and operate her little play store so that Al and/or Gina could come to the window and place an order for some imaginary treat. Oh, boy!
I just don't have any clear memories of Ben's or Jason't child/children when they were emerging from the toddler age, but I'll bet it would be a major hoot to let Ben's crew sit around a table and talk about their favorite memory on the homestead--and maybe the thing they had to do that was their least favorite. Too, I can imagine that Penelope has some great stories....like what it was like to endure the build-up before she could drive the mini truck.
Oh well, we can dream, can't we? Again...thanks, guys, for being who you are and for sharing with us so graciously!

We live just North of Dallas in the path of totality. Of course we were in Chicago that day for a family 50th anniversary party. Totality hit there about 1:44. I pulled up my Ring doorbell from 1:40 to 1:48 to at least see how dark it got. When the video started, our trees and grass were all green. As the eclipse began, our camera switched to night mode and everything was black and white. While it was dark, we could see the streetlight across the street come on. Then our neighbor's headlights lit up the street. It was really cool to see. I now understand all of the hype for being in a Totality solar eclipse and want to experience it in person. Chicago only had about an 80% eclipse and wasn't nearly as impressive.

My grandmother was a child during a total eclipse in the early 1900’s in Southern Illinois. She didn’t know that she shouldn’t look directly into the sun. She had a terrible outcome with several holes burned into her retinas. It became a lifelong disability that she never let get in her way. She became a school teacher before she was the mother of five and a post office manager later. The danger is real.
My gramma became my hero as I watched her overcome hurdle after hurdle due to her vision loss.

BEN - During some of your down time start looking for Great Depression CCC camp designs utilizing logs. Low tables, eating tables, chairs, benches, hillside holding, stairs, gardening and landscaping terraces, stepping pads/ paths, and so much more; different camps and also, different regions has different things they made. Of course wood species made a difference but many of these things lasted a long time.

Each of you have leaves amd at least some space: Start layering your leaves with barn/ chicken cleanings then let sit for 6 to 24 months. Leaf mulch seems to retain water and soil structure better then many other vegetation even when in small particles or larger pieces. Often you can double or triple your compost volumes if you include and properly layer barn clearnings with them.

Y’all guys are so interesting in that crack me up with that hammer Jason me my favorite tool lol I actually always have a box cutter with me because I constantly cut the cardboard that come in from the Amazon boxes and I either use them in my compost or in the back and I just was at a garage sale and this person had a lot of hammers Good really cheap. I think three dollars or something but I bought some because for some reason here hammers grow feet and they takeoff meaning three of my sons come over pick up stuff and then never get it back… my middle child has my refurbished sharpshooter that my husband put a new handle on it and he took it about two weeks ago hasn’t brought it back and I need it. I use that sharpshooter to cut down and break down the compost that I make. 🌱🌱🌱
It’s already getting hot here in Houston and I have a lot of work to do this weekend in the garden working on stuff. I have a lot of growth coming up zucchini and melons. I’m really trying to get better at beans beans, bush beans, beans, whatever because I have not been successful at all, and I really want to.

You can find some nice rich loamy soil if you have woods on your property. Just rake back the top leaf layer and you can find some nice naturally composted leaf loam. You might have to amend it, but it will save you time from composting from your animals because nature has done all the hard work.

First year I was here tried to plant in red clay and couldn’t even pull a weed it was so hard. Next year I was able to get some wood chips free enough to cover my garden about 6 to 8 inches. Planted a garden in that which was better the next year it had broken down and it was getting really good. This is year 7 for me and have added chips when ever I got them and my chicken compost. Now it is really pretty good nice and black! Just takes time

I saw a full eclipse back in 1978 in Hood River, oregon. It was a very sunny morning and they let us come into work an hour late so we wouldnt be distracted drivers and to try and avoid the inundation of cars (small town, insufficient hotels, people sleeping in there cars on side of road).
Didnt notice a change in temp but the silence of birds, insects, cows and especially dogs was eerie.
Another thing that was bizarre was everything looked like heat waves coming off pavement on hot summer afternoons. I have balance issues and it was as if i had twirled round and round and then tried to walk.
The best part about the eclipse though was the people. While there werent as many Karens aroun back then, i worked at city hall and the one constant was that not everyone was thrilled to be there. But on that day everyon was happy and smiling. It was nice.

Yeah a RUclipsr that I watch lost almost all his chicken breeding hens & babies. They destroyed most of his electric netting. It was a pack of dogs that belonged to a neighbor bcuz he followed them home. Tried talking to the people and the people said "well you should have killed them," instead of taking care of their dogs or paying for his losses.
This took 3 years of breeding program away, all his income, and set him back 2 years in his breeding program bcuz he knew he had to move bcuz these dogs would be back. His new homestead is almost ready to move to. Bare land, shed to cabin, well, septic & electric.
So, in reality, he lost a lot more than $50,000 from all its cost him to move his business and home.

The dog thing! Our neighbors dogs who are aggressive rotties have changed at all of us on our property, toddler daughter included. It happened 5-6 times. We tried to talk to them. Offered to help with fencing they didn’t care until we called animal control. We lost so many chickens last year. This year since they have gotten their dogs more under control nothing. A citation from animal control may help your situation.

We had dogs get into our rabbitry. They killed about $350 worth of rabbits. We set traps around it (it was a pole shelter) and let the neighbors know. The dogs never returned. But we did catch a racoon, which we dispatched.

Al, brilliant idea! Saw something like that. It was some kind of netting they were laying over the cut rock passes on interstate. Then sprayed and 'wow' green and growing in days.

We had a total eclipse here in Casper Wyoming in 2017 it was the neatest thing to live through. Our entire town was full, including people camping the Walmart parking lots. There was no parking spaces open.

A "natural seed bank" in the soil (22:56) already!! For 300 years!! How amazing! But it shouldn't be since it's found in Genesis One: "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so." Heard this from Joel Saladin once. Love it! Amen.

So I am harvesting carrots at this time. I grew so many carrots I have about. Four beds that I did carrots because my granddaughter was going to make a big picture with the carrots for Easter and it didn’t happen so now I have carrots come out of my ears and I’ve been harvesting them and giving some to family and close friends I still have two beds left, but I’ve already succession started new carrots for For And I’m doing danvers half long because I don’t have a deep root soil. I’m planning in containers but they are so delicious and they are so good and I think it’s carrots and cabbage is probably one of my favorite onion and garlic, but I love the carrots.

The eclipse in Calif wasn’t much…maybe a third of the sun blocked and none of the side issues you mentioned. As to the age thing it gets even weirder. I’ll turn 80 next month and what has happened to me is what took place five years ago seems to like it was only a couple of years ago…I think Covid is partly to blame…we lost about two years with that. As always the podcast is fun to listen to. I think the fact that I watch all your channels helps. Thanks guys.

Thanks for another fun podcast. Jason, I saw a hammer like that at the Cracker Barrel on a stand of unique gifts. I told my son he needed to get one of those....a tool box in your pocket. It would be a great gift for a woman also. Very handy around the house for hanging pictures, tightening a screw etc. I hope you come up with a spray seeder Al. I remember see a new subdivision going in where they did that to each lawn...kept the soil from washing away as well as it gave the new home owner a good start on their landscaping. Ben, I'm looking forward to your build getting on....just wish you could get a break in the weather. Well I guess it is time to close this episode, y'all have a Blessed week.

With your trash pump, use a backpack leaf blower! Maybe a sheet rock mixer! Be careful because they will eat a plastic tote
