  • Welcome to the second part of my travel story to the new Icelandic volcano in what it means for the nearest town and our infrastructure.
Part 3 will be online soon. Link to Part I
    • The Icelandic Volcano ...
Part 1. The travel to Grindavík and the surroundings:
Part 2. Full Grindavík tour, culture and stories.
Part 3. Walking tour to the volcano and footage
So for those of you who just wanted to see the “red stuff” it’s less than you might expect, but i covered however the surroundings very well and it’s mixed with information about icelandic history, culture and mentality, which is an approach that I know many of my viewers like.

Thanks, interesting series. One of the British fishing boats in the 1970s cod wars was the Ross Revenge, which had formerly operated out of Reykjavik in the 1960s under its original name Freyr. In the 1980s it was bought by the Radio Caroline organisation and broadcast for several years before eventually succumbing to damage from several storms and running aground on the Goodwin Sands. It is now moored in the Blackwater estuary in Essex, and can still be visited on tours, as I did a couple of years ago. A good strong ship, lots of information about it on RUclips and internet sites.

So much interesting recent history told in such an engaging way. Us Brits are uncomfortable being reminded of The Cod Wars but I personally first became aware of Iceland as a child through news reports of the eruption on the Westmann Islands. My imagination was captured by stories of the people saving their harbour from the lava by pumping seawater from ships to stop it advancing. I made a point of getting out to Heimay the first time I came to Iceland and learned of the mass evacuation from the eruption museum there. Finding out in this video that many of the evacuated families and the boats that took them ended up in Grindavik adds the next instalment of the story for me. I’m regretting now that l got no further on the Reykjanes peninsula than the Blue Lagoon, but maybe there will be another chance to visit Iceland soon.

Great explanation of science of eruption and surrounding area. Having an eruption just down the road from the Keflavik international airport should kick off a great tourist season. One of the most enjoyable weekly events at Naval Air Station Keflavik in the late 70s was Friday night fish fry at USO. Nothing like having a piece of cod the size of your fist from Grindavik. Thanks for the renewed memories. Really appreciate the video!

Wonderful, captivating story telling. As a child growing up in northern England, I vaguely recall watching the cod wars play out on regional news in glorious black and white - but mostly grey. It was a ludicrous, dangerous battle that should never have been fought and eventually justice prevailed. Ironically, I now work for the primary maritime search and rescue charity in the U.K., rescuing fishermen of all nations in seas which can be dangerous enough even in the best of weather. Thank you for this insight into the real Iceland and roll on episode 3.

Your clips, commentary, drone shots, scientific and history knowledge and humor are about the best of any travel videos I have ever seen. And I look and plan down to a spreadsheet trip plan; we travel a lot (minus covid time). Thank you for a totally refreshing, un-hyped, beautiful look at your country. So looking forward to it; coming via Denmark on the boat with our own car. Sure hope those volcanoes and earthquakes stay quiet next year! Merci, thanks so much. Linda near Paris, France.

We are now independent in the UK so be interesting to see what happens with our fishing limits and quotas now we have Brexited from EU. Pirate Radio Caroline the converted fishing boat one of your commenters mentioned is just down the coast and used to anchor off Felixstowe/Harwich during the Sixties playing pop songs it had a colourful life. Whe I was young fishing in Alaska we had openings with no individual quota but then the quota system came. Some did sell theirs quickly to the big companies. The only way now is to start as a deck hand and save your pennies until you have enough to start to buy quotas from those selling.

But thanks for visiting and always welcome :)

The reason you have probably not seen many trees in his videos is because he has been posting alot about the volcano and the area around. That area is of course a lava field - Old hardened lava from previous eruptions. Trees need soil to grow. There is not much soil in old lava fields, only layers and layers of rock. But the fact that the settlement people did cut down most of Iceland's forests and the fact that trees in Iceland grow slower than in other places of the world because of lack of sunlight and weather conditions, does not help the tree count in Iceland. But of course there are trees in Iceland in more habitable areas and even forests. Just not on lava fields.

One of my Icelandic relatives ís 73 years old and been on fishing boats all his life since he was 8 years old. He now has his own boat and still goes out to fish with his family.
