- Welcome to the third part of my travel story to the new Icelandic volcano in what it means for the nearest town and our infrastructure.

Part 1. The travel to Grindavík and the surroundings:
Part 2. Full Grindavík tour, culture and stories.
Part 3. Walking tour to the volcano and footage
So for those of you who just wanted to see the “red stuff” it’s less than you might expect, but i covered however the surroundings very well and it’s mixed with information about icelandic history, culture and mentality, which is an approach that I know many of my viewers like.

Thank you stubborn sheep man! That bird on the light post with the moon is amazing!
You are very welcome :)
Yes, that was a brilliant shot!
“Warm and cosy...” I’m sure you were glad of it after freezing to death trying to get there. I love this storyline, thank you for all your efforts. 🇷🇴🇬🇧👍🏻
Welcome :)
I especially love the story with the tripod! It is one of regular experiences for me (private or as guide), or for my guests (tourists). If you loose or forget something somewhere on this island, it will be found and you will get it back - it just needs some phone calls.
Moral: nothing can be lost in Iceland, exept for your heart!
Awww, that is such a lovely comment on the people of Iceland. Thanks. I live in the US in a smallish town (50k) in the SW. I have never left anything anywhere here that I did not get back including my credit card and, once, a $20 bill. That is unusual for much of the world today but it makes one feel so good to be able to live in a place like that. I know how you feel.
It warms my geologist heart to hear your perspective on accepting uncertainty as part of science. Most people have a really hard time understanding that imperfect knowledge is much better than no knowledge.
Amen to that!!! (30 yrs in IT and hydrologic database field for USGS)
The town with the red skies is a beautiful shot 🔥🔥🌋
Thanks a lot :)
Great shots, for those a world away we feel like were are right there.
Awesome and welcome :)
Oh my goodness! Thank you for working so hard to make this video! It is awesome!
Thanks a lot :)
Love your commentary Gylfi. Feel for all the Grindavikers in 2024.
👍 appreciated
It’s so amazing to see this video from three years ago.
Thanks and welcome :)
Thanks for so much information about the town, the volcano and the prognosis for more volcanic activity in the coming years after thousands being inactive. The country and its people are in my prayers!
You should make copies of the town at night with the volcano erupting in the backgroud. I'd buy a photo of that professionally done and treasure it.
Geologists sound like economists. You both need two hands to make predictions.Economist, "the stock market could go up for a long time. On the other hand, it could go down."
Geologist, "This could end any time, on the other hand, this could go on for decades."
Thank you so much for working so hard to get these shots. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed it, and your others and your informed commentary. The shot of the town at night with the volcano erupting in the background was stunning. I've saved a copy of that just to preserve the memory.
I’m glad you did it too! I love your artistic flair with the camera and your thoughtful and fun comments too . I have watched other videos, but I like yours’ best! There is an expression in English, “ you think outside the box, “ which means that you have long range vision ( not for entertainment only)and ask very good questions about how this affects the future. I love to watch something that makes me curious and helps me think beyond the actual thing being photographed.
Thank you so much!!
Wonderful, i'm grateful for this :) and welcome back, more to come soon :)
Thank you so much!! Please stay safe 🙏❤️
Thanks for the whole series on Grindavik.
My pleasure
Thank you for sharing your video adventure with us And expressing the wonderful composite of life in the vicinity of the volcano and the community very near by to it. I looked up the definition of adventure - an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.
Thank you i really enjoyed this video - really interesting and I loved the shot of the oystercatcher!
Thanks a lot :)
Greetings to the best storyteller in all of Iceland. "Smoking Peninsula" is the perfect description of the area surrounding Grindavik and a huge thank you for the quick reminder that Kirkjufell is still on my bucket list; can't wait to be back in this part of the world. Be well and travel safe!
Thank you very much and welcome back :)
Thank you for sharing, from the other side of the world in New Zealand 🇳🇿,. I do enjoy watching the livestream channels, but also like hearing local thoughts about what is going on and just how big this event may be 🤝thanks again 😀
Thank You for your very detailed and informative video, stills and commentary. My goodness! The large chunk of red hot lava that fell near to you shows just how dangerous it can be to get too close to a volcano. Beautiful pictures of birds, sheep, etc. Thank You for sharing your always entertaining videos of the volcano and surrounding area. Stay safe. 🙏
You worked hard on this great story, and you make it look easy, thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you. I always look forward to your videos. Very informative with some wry humour.
Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic video. It really put eruption in context. Icelandic winds are both your friend and enemy when hiking around lava hills. Appreciate inclusion of maps that help put things in context. Thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful island and for making the trek to the volcano. Glad you recovered the tripod.
Thanks for watching!
Love it.
Welcome :)
Thanks for doing these videos, I do want to point out that although there are several folks doing video journals around the volcano, I think you are the only one reporting on geologist perspective. Who are your geologist sources speculating on the lava reservoir activities and how can we get more information from them? Can you interview them and bring back their musings? I read somewhere there was something about mix of materials coming up - geologists are using that to speculate about what type of eruption this is.
Thank you! I really enjoyed this series and I learned a lot! Your humor is the best! I look forward to viewing your content here on RUclips. Great capture of the seagull and the moon! Stay well 💜
thank you so much for your truly heroic efforts to bring us shots of the volcano...and of the tough people of Iceland. .. and the wildlife!!... what a relief that your tripod was still there!... praise the Lord... the people are very trust worthy in the countryside!!... 😉👍👍👌👌
once again very fascinating history of Grindavík. Looking forward to your next videos.
Many thanks!
Mesmerizing for sure thank you.
Thank you :)
Thank you for yet another great update, and the looks all around Grindavik and the area. Count me as another geologist who appreciates your view on uncertain future predictions. My rule of thumb is “If Scientist A says something *will* happen in a specific time frame, then they are almost certainly wrong. If they say there is a good chance something will occur in the same time frame, I’ll listen to their arguments and see what I think.”
I like to think of geology as the art of solving a four-dimensional jigsaw puzzle (the Earth) when you are limited to only a tiny slice of the time dimension, so all you can see is the results of everything that happened prior to us. Good for keeping humble, I think...
Thanks for painting the bigger picture, much appreciated.
Sorry the hear that you weren't able to shoot what you wanted. Problem seems to be that the 'viewing hill' closest to the volcano is about to get cut off by the rising lava
Brilliant naration and imagery, an all round pleasure to watch, thank you.
Many thanks!
Excellent. Thank You.
Thanks for visiting :)
Interesting. Many thanks for publishing this informative video. I did the hike to the volcano on 5th August. Nothing happening but the idiots walking on the lava flow were in full party mode. And yes, the way down finished my legs. You are not alone.
Uff yeas, my backpack was way to heavy for hiking, but we got down alright and the matters the most, cheers :)
Wonderful updates always enjoy your perspective(s) 🌞
Thank you kindly
Great coverage! I'm amazed your tripod was still there!
I was actually not surprised :) but not in Reykjavik, it would have been gone there for sure :)
🥝
Well - the tripod was still there because nobody wants the extra weight in their gear lol.
Thank you - love your videos and commentary. I've watched several videos now on geology of Iceland - a Large Igneous Provence (LIP) along Divergent Plate Boundary - direct access to magma! (More horse pictures!) 👍👍👍❤️
You will get them for sure :)
Thank you very much. I have learned a lot from your splendid videos (I watched them in succession) - and I like your sense of humor as well. I'm smiling for Iceland. 8-)
Thanks for stopping by :)
Yay popcorn! 😁 4.47=what a spectacular shot! So beautiful.
Thanks :)
Thanks again Gylfi!
My pleasure and welcome Hans :)
Thank you, I really enjoyed your video on Grindyvik
Natural isolation :)
I seriously hope your Country recognises the brilliant work you have done for them compared to the masses of 'lovely shots of meaningless lava' put out by the others!
You should be given a helicopter ride out there next time, I felt for you in those cruel conditions!
Next part of your story, ' Icelandic Prime Minister recognises brilliant work of Old Timer, at last' lol
Fabulous 3-part series. Thank you. One day I hope to visit Iceland.
Glad you enjoyed it and welcome to Iceland :)
It's wonderful to see and hear the human side of this fascinating time in Iceland. There are lava videos a plenty on here but your videos, with your insights and information are second to none. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these.
Thanks so much to risk your live to offer us so amazing pictures and video 😉 LOL Great Job!
My pleasure :)
Thank you for the update! I'm glad to hear you didn't lose your tripod. I can't wait for the next update.
Me too! Going south to get it soon and getting more images from the lava about to flow over the highway :)
@@JustIcelandic Thank you again for sharing your passion for photography and captivating storytelling!
Stay safe ! Volcano has much power than we believe and see. Wow all around became an ocean of Lava 🌋👍
Wonderful series. Thank you!
Glad you like them :)
Interesting, if the volcano is part of a chain, then Iceland will increase in size slowly.
It is measurable every year as the plates pull apart.
Thank you! Great story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm glad you made it back from the hike and the footage was definitely worth it :) It is interesting to compare the landscape with what's happening with the lava, you can really see how lots of parts of it must have formed.
Valley of idiots" hahahaa. Also that wind reminds of of hurricanes in Florida.
👍 thanks :)
There are other places besides Iceland where there are valleys of idiots, lol. But probably none where people are like 50 feet away from hot lava.
You said after looking at the earthquake pattern "something is there"... And 3 years later it woke up, closer to Grindavik and Svartsengi...
You were right...
Excellent you b man well done. You deserved a good medal!!!👟👟👟🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋👍👍👀👀😻😻
Awesome video ! Wow! The sound ! 🌋👍👍❤️
Thank you so much 🤗
I loved these videos . Thank you ❤️
You are so welcome ❤️ thanks :)
I am so excited to become an idiot(i'm a natural) too when i come to visit your beautiful country next month! Your videos are amazing and so informative. I have become addicted to your volcano updates and i try to learn a little correct Icelandic pronunciations along the way. Much thanks from the hills of north Georgia in the USA and keep the videos coming!!!
Best regards to North Georgia and welcome to Iceland and I hope you will have a fantastic trip :)
Another excellent video. Stay safe.
Thanks 👍
Yes the picture of Reykjavik with the orange skies in back is VERY effective and very pretty (mainly because we know there is no immediate danger) I like that I got to see the amount of e/quakes even out to sea, you can definitely see the line of the 'rift' Also very glad you got you t/pod back, do you really think that in Reykjavik it would never have been seen again? 😢 😢 😢
It's hard not to be at least a little worried about Iceland right now. If you have to move the people in the town it's going to be expensive. Lots of people around the world would likely donate to help with disaster relief if it comes to that.
Thanks. Your videos are very informative!
Glad you like them :)
Thanks. Great video
Thanks :)
Great video and photography.
Many thanks!
Many thanks!
I never knew Iceland's capital was _called_ 'Smoking'. Thanks for your quietly informative posts.
Thanks and welcome :)
Did you know in Iceland, people routinely leave their tripods alone outside while they might hang out in a coffee shop? Even in the cold, tripods will be outside while their owners run errands. So, if you ever see a tripod unattended, DON’T WORRY! The owner will be nearby...usually.
Correct :) it's the second time I left a tripod somewhere :) and found it again :)
@@JustIcelandic The second time? Uh-oh that tripod is going to grow up with abandonment issues.
hi my friend, great day
Thanks for the visit :)
Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it
That tripod would have lasted seconds in the USA. Also, well done video.
Thanks a lot, just picked it up last week in West Iceland :)
So are Icelanders very law abiding? Or do they have a rebellious streak? Or do they manage to be rebellious while being law abiding at the same time?
LOL, I'd like to see the reply to this.
From what I have heard, they are very ethical and do unto others mostly, try to handle conflicts in community or with intervention, but if authorities or power overstep or do bad things they simply do NOT go along even if sorta legal behavior- they do a lawful version of a Revolution against them and hold them accountable.
Very admirable imo
Please provide closed captions. I'd love to understand every word. You provide so much information. I'm hearing impaired.

? Interview the locals w your humor. We'd like to know what emotions or additudes of both sides alert or ignoring??
Very impressed you travel 240 miles to let us share!! Number 2 in SW UK

❤
I like the Icelandic people's honesty of not taking your tripod. Also the real idiots were the people NOT sitting by the lava warming their toes. With that kind of weather that was the best place to be.
Glad you got to see what its like to be a dumb tourist and enjoy it. 😊 Sometimes, you just get caught in the moment.
I know all about it 😊
I love your spirit, Old Un-co-operative Sheep on a path of His own--LOLOL and Valley of Idiots--call it like it is --but you appreciated the heat and that is good for a visit, but you wouldn't want to live there! LOLOL!
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😀
Bigger picture can be very scary, so you joined valley of idiots :)) That was funny. Take care.
Thanks, new update online now :)
do you think that there is still a chance of a big earthquake? and how big do you think it could it be?
The big one in Brennisteinsfjöll could come today, or in many years and it's no way to say for sure when it's gonna hit us...
One of Icelands hottest idiots.
Oh my - you make me laugh😂
🌋🧡
The lava burg calving was awesome! Wow! And that last photograph.....
Im so glad that you took the time!
Can I please have a link to your earthquake time lapse simulation?
I love your vids but, because of your accent, I have a hard time understanding you. I wish subs were available or a transcript posted. Thank you.
Dont put your life in danger.
I won't :)
I really want to see someone try to pop popcorn on the volcano. Do try it, please, but wear goggles.
And they say my car is polluting the atmosphere!
👍 thanks for stopping by :)
RVK newscasts (Reykjavik Grapevine) has an episode about volcanos and the effects on global warming👍
"...and captured more or less everything that there is to capture."

Thanks a lot 🤣 and welcome :)
I think I need to get my jabs and book my flight to Iceland on Idiot Air.
