- The lava at the eruption site in Fagradalsfjall is now on average 16 metres high with a stable flow rate of 5 cubic metres per second. Today, we discuss an engineering firm which wants to do experiments to control the lava flow in the area to save future construction sites. Also-the first craters in the south and north seem to have stopped erupting. All this and more in the Reykjavík Newscast.

If Art (I think that is his name?) would not have some talent in filming even the nicest Gimbal (As can be seen in the shadow at 6:36 ff) could not help produce those nice shots. For example the scene at the beginning where Valur was just standing exactly not to close and not to far away from the lava in the background that the sun over the mountain would just light up the head instead of the whole body when to close or nothing at all when Valur had stood totally in the shadow!
What I would like to see (If I could voice a wish for EP 100!) is a "Making off" of those prior Episodes regarding Northie-Southie, Mini-me and tthe whole bunch of vents. With outtakes of scenes that were not publishing worth and some introduction of the people "Behind the Camera" and all that Postproduction stuff.
While Valur is obviously capable to articulate a train of thought for more then a hand full of seconds, which does not make it necessary to have a cut every 2-3 seconds that one nowadays see in so many videos elsewhere when someone says something into a camera, I doubt that there were no bloopers in his texts!
P.S. I liked how Valur mentioned 7:58 ff "It is just a name: Verkís | hf It's also impossible to understand this in Icelandic." ;-)

I really like your updates. I've noticed how clean the area still is despite having lots of visitors. During your walk I saw no garbage left behind. I doff my hat to all the people that take the trash home with them.

You just missed some... Mt Gambier in Vic was just 6000 yrs ago, and some of the volcanoes in Atherton, QLD, were as recent as 20,000 yrs ago. Certainly aborigines would have seen them...

Perhaps the studies of Vulcanology will be greatly expanded because of this ‘gentle’ flow. When you compare it to the 100 m3 of some other volcanoes, this is slow and steady. But looking at the valley systems m it could spread out to cover roads and other things. So it is good that it gives you time to study it and find things that might work to help divert this and other volcanoes.
As always, thank you for going and showing us the site. I can’t believe how much this has changed in 1 month. Wow.

Thank you for answering the question I had in my mind, which was how much lava is flowing right now. Many channels are following this eruption, using very dramatic language and close-ups, but giving scant hard information. @dean wayne Not sure how serious the criticism of Valur was! I myself posted one or another short comment, regarding that remark in one of the prior videos, on the restream channels of the RÚV streams here where there is chat activated. First it was just a "technical" issue since he used other references to the vents then the people there!
As far as I understood the anger some felt offended that he called THEIR behaviour something not nice while HE did the same just with other madeup Names.

I for myself don't care so much because once you understand what vent he is talking about when he says "little John" or Mini-me" what is the problem? Little John is SIF and Mini-me is FLO if I understand it correctly by the way FYI.

Thank you also for being open to accept the online community of Bob-lovers. I check the BOBcam and FLOcam every night, and I have become very attached to my volcano friends, Bob, Rag-Nar, Sif, Hel, Ulf (rip), and Flo (rip).

I was mesmerized by the entire video, not just the exquisite drone footage at the end. I've no doubt the engineers will come up with a way to divert the lava.

Many of us from overseas appreciate All the video feeds we can get from this amazing opportunity to see this eruption over the last month or so. I certainly look forward to your commentary and have thoroughly enjoyed your Abandoned Iceland series and most of the Saga series. I doubt that I will ever visit Iceland, though I knew someone (nearly 50 years ago) who had spent 12 months in Iceland.
Hi Valur, I can tell you exactly why the first vent was nicknamed "Bob " in our RUclips chat. It started because , as a group, we had no name to call it. I knew from info. you provided that Grindavik would be naming it....... four days went by, and in a moment of impatience, I said " Ok, guys... I don't know about you, but as for myself, I'm going to call it "Bob ". Why Bob ? Well, the new volcano wasn't coming off as hostile or life-threatening.... you could, as you did, walk right up to it. This was a friendly volcano. As for only myself, Bob only has the connotation of being a nice guy, agreeable... like someone who would split his submarine sandwich with you if you didn't have anything to eat. It was my own personal name for it. Quite unexpectedly, others in the chat started using it as well, They seemed to like it....even Icelanders on the chat did... especially the local S & R members ! The rest is history. Nothing disparaging was ever the case... just a easy to use nick-name for our chat. PS: #98 made my feel like I've truly visited the site.. many thanks from all your fans !
Bobnation has grown and engaged folk who have learned so much more than they ever knew about volcanic eruptions and the effects they have on the environment. Community learning is fun and that simple name helped enormously. It doesn't matter if you're 5 or 95, everyone involved with it has been enriched by it.
Also each name is an acronym
Like BoB is Belching out Lava...FLO was Fast Lava Output, etc

If anyone is visiting Iceland, a trip to Heimaey on Vestmannaeyjar is worth your time. It is spectacularly beautiful and you can climb the volcano Eldfell which appeared on the outskirts of the town in 1973. You can also visit the excavated houses buried under tens of metres of ash as well as walk along the lava flow that was diverted away from the vital harbour by the bravery and incalculable efforts of the locals and the US Navy.
The novelist Yrsa Sigurðadóttir has set one of her murder mysteries in wake of the eruption. Well worth anyone’s time - and her character Thora is just delightful.

thank you from Canada. we have been watching since the first night. it is amazing how much it has changed. until we can see it in person for ourselves, we will continue to watch your informative videos.
I was a young graduate student in the early 70's and actually travelled to Iceland when the lava was threatening the city to watch what happened when water was used to cool the lava so that the flow could be redirected away from areas of homes and businesses and it was a very amazing thing. When one thinks about the fact that these volcanos are actually there to build the island, and that was a good thing back before anyone wanted to live there, but now that people are there its a matter of how to live along side a volcano and allow it to do what it is supposed top do environmentally, while also being able to allow people to survive also.
We certainly have seen in other places in this world where human habitation has taken away habitats of animals and we have lost many species as we did not seem to want to find a way where we could both share and make it work for all. Here we have volcanoes that one needs to find a way to share with them as we can't make them go away, and they are actually more likely to make it impossible for humans to habitat.
It would be nice to think that there could be a way to direct the lava to areas where it can add to the land mass without destroying where humans have decided to habituate and in the big picture actually provide more land for habitation.

That gave me the fear at 11:22 seeing people standing on the hardened lava... It may look solid, it may be from a fissure that hasn't been erupting for a couple days to a week but it's impossible to say that there's no lava under them... there could be lava tubes meters under them supplying a slow flow of lava which could emerge and cut them off. The lava tube could be empty and collapse

I like that you can't really call the area a valley anymore, all filled with lava and volcanoes.
They have a competition in Grindaviyck? (spelling?) to find a new name for that (ex beautiful) valley. I suggest 'Mountain of the lost beautiful valley' as most of their names for volcanoes incorporate the name of the place.
I could listen to Valur all day in combination with this on-point-„art“ful (who got it? 😉) videography makes it a perfect newsreport. There's a wonderful documentary on Vimeo called "Living With Lava", it's about Icelanders learning to cope/live with the Volcanos, I highly recommend it if you are at all interested in Iceland & this kind of stuff.

I remember watch it flow originally with my husband and adult son and we were wondering when it was going to reach the bottom of the valley it’s unrecognisably from that first Saturday bout still I find myself spending a couple of hours a day watching this beautiful spectacle

Overhead drone shot from at the start of video is spectacular! Shots of lava waterfall are wonderful; however, you can’t see the true amounts / impact of lave until you see overhead shot.

It's interesting seeing the different types of lava. Looks like it's had Pahoehoe (pillowy) and the crumbly kind like AA lava. But I wonder why they can come from the same spot, but cool differently.
Probably environmental factors.

And last week we flew to Iceland to see it live, I got my second covid vaccine and we booked tickets for 2 days later! Enjoyed the talk, and the walk around. I do remember the 1973 eruption, it made news in the U.S. as they fought to keep their bay open. and they did succeed.

Obviously is, but the problem is walking those lava rocks was hard enough for the presenter and the cameraman had to do it while not looking at his footing,.. backwards and sideways. No steady cam is gonna correct a cameraman falling on his ass,
