Constant Land Uplift and Suspected Magma Inflow to the Channel Under Grindavik

  • We swing between optimism and pessimism several times a day, often pending on which scientists the media chooses to interview. Like it's very hard to see how this magma inflow into the dyke under Grindavik is developing now since the information we are getting are often misleading, and it's not making my job any easier since on the one hand I don't want to settle between scientists, and on the other hand I want to come up with different points of view, but there are just too many of them. So again, the perfect uncertainty.

When I first found this channel several years ago, three things stood out: The level-headed commentary that took what data was available, and applied common sense and reason to interpreting it, the spectacular visuals, clearly the work of a professional, and the warmth and humor of a man who cared about the people who would be affected by these geological changes. I'm so happy that none of this has changed over the years. By far my favorite view of what's going on in Iceland during these times of unrest.

You are actually turning into an ambassador to the Icelandic way of life. It is not only the contents of your videos that are great. You also have to make decisions about the structure of the story you tell, about how you enter all the bits of information into the video, about timing, about the overall look and so on. And the way you make those creative decisions tells us something about the Icelandic way of thinking, too. There is curiosity, thoughtfulness, openmindedness, resilience, care, love for your country, worries - but not to an extend to let them ruin your positive attitude, a sense for beauty, for the contrast between action and quietness, and so many more qualities that create a picture of a people I really want to visit one day.

I know 1st hand the raw power of the Earth. When Mt.St.Helens catastrophically exploded in 1980 people, 47 I recall were killed many kilometers away by the pyroclastic flows. The USGS had underestimated its power, making the no-go zones too small. In Iceland's case, I believe great caution is the better part of valor & discretion. I realize the burden of the residents is hard living away from their homes and jobs, but that hardship is less than loosing their lives or loved ones in a sudden unexpected eruption. Don't get too close to the show. Stay safe my friend.

❤❤❤I love your country, its people, art, positive attitudes, and the gorgeous land. Many looked at my pictures and commented on its desolate landscape. They are WRONG! I was awestruck by all the glacier-carved fjords, the high mountains of lava one crosses to get to the northwest fishing villages, the perfectly formed peaks of old volcanoes, the different appearances of lava forms like pillow lava, the tons of swans nesting, the hundreds of bleating sheep, the puffins, the gorgeous waterfalls, and so much more.
The Icelandic people are so friendly and helpful. We spent a lot of time in Grindavik, and my heart bleeds for its people. One of my first memories as we drove around town was the carefree children dismissed from school and the boys running and jumping on their way home. I just wish they could be doing that now. From Coastal Mississippi. ❤❤❤

I wanted to make a very special thanks to you for your work. This latest drone footage and your commentary is fascinating. As there is little chance of my being able to travel to Iceland, your videos are wonderful. The drone footage both normal and thermal is amazing, you can clearly see the divisions on the earth where there may be potential plate movement, and the current deep fissures. I hope you will be able to carry on such amazing work. Enjoy your time at home.

Your home town is so beautiful Gylfi♥️. I love the snow❄️❄️
Your narratives to the videos are very informative yet charming😊!
With the ground uplift continuing it does seem likely that quakes will be a larger magnitude/quantity. Where any ground quake measurement devices damaged around the area of Grindavik this past month?
It’s good to know that water, electric, sewage was not damaged in the city this month. Fishermen everywhere always want more hours in the day for fishing…it’s in their nature, as well as their livelihood.
Is there a geological museum in the country demonstrating the rock types and ages along with how it is evolving straddling the MidAtlantic Ridge?
    Thank you for your update!

Such a beautiful country, watching your videos has moved a visit to Iceland to the top of my list. Hopefully it hasn’t changed dramatically before I make the trip.
Beautiful videos and gripping narration, thank you and best of luck from Canada’s west coast.

Wonderful to finally find such a channel hosted by a native Icelander. I appreciate the info from other channels but hearing them butcher the Icelandic pronunciations, even by long term immigrants like myself is grating to the ears. It was wonderful being able to listen without having to guess where and what you were talking about

this is devastating for the town, but it is good to hear that some people will carry on, regardless, as long as lava doesn't take the town off the map.

Thanks for your detailed presentation. I always wondered why Grindavik was located right on the spreading center...I could only think it might have been because of the excellent harbor which, even today, continues to deepen. My goodness, what a difficult time for the town residents!

Seeing this clutch of trees being called a "massive forest" made me chuckle a bit, as an Austrian, but then, there's probably a Canadian chuckling over our "massive forests", and an anaconda somewhere chuckling over Canadians. 🙃
Thanks for the news and the fantastic footage. ❤ Congratulations to the reforestation success. I would LOVE to see more reforestation for Iceland. 💚
What a sad situation for the Blue Lagoon this is.
I've been thinking about an Iceland journey in the past (might still happen), although not so much for the landscapes but because I would love to soak in every steaming pool (we're talking those declared safe), the more natural looking, the better. 😅💙

Icelandic forests and sarcasm is a good blend :) however, the Reykjanes Peninsula is very far from being a good representative of the Icelandic landscape, it's very young and burned, it's the naughty teenager when to come to the age of Iceland, and not all like it, but I do :) and welcome to Iceland :)

Just discovered your channel, and find it to be very informative and professional. I was stationed in Iceland (Keflavik) for two years 1967-69 with the U.S. Navy. Our son was born during that time (1968). We traveled a lot while there and had many amazing adventures. Thank you for the work you are doing, and for giving so many a "drone's eye" view of these earth-changing events.
