- Hjalteyri by the Arctic Coast Way is the home of 40 people but it's one of our "Klondyke" villages that sprang up beside the Herring industry, and almost died when the Herring years were over.

You forgot to say that when the sun comes down in Summer, so do the temperatures 😉! We had 2ºC in early july some years ago, watching the sun going down then up again from the beginning of old Ólafsfjarðarvegur, 30km North from Hjalteyri. This was so nice and incredible...
Good point! but I love the summer solstice around there but it's more to come about that later on :)

Good to hear that Hjalteyri seems to be making a comeback....Small towns are a great place for families and close communities to thrive. With all the beautiful scenery there, I was wondering if those four large fish tanks could be turned into artwork, painted murals. Icelandic horses galloping, whales and fish, sheep grazing, mountain and rocks and sky! There has to be a vibrant group of art talent with such beauty has Iceland has. My daughter in high school with her art class beautified an old brick wall of a building with one. I have seen where Reykjavik has some interesting designs on some of their buildings. Usually rural areas have some very gifted people. Just an idea, not that others don’t have better ones....Anyway, all the best to the town!
I know there was a concert in one of hem a while ago due to the "special effects" and you're right, it's only chances there with all those buildings :)
@@JustIcelandic You are right about using the buildings for shops or studios, etc, a venue for the arts. That would work well with the growing tourism in the area. It is such a beautiful, pristine place, as well. 💜🇮🇸

You have amazing connections to this place, quite incredible - I guess now that Akureyri is such a large attraction, these other smaller towns and ports become far more sustainable (or promising for the future). I wondered whether there're any extremely remote old ports that are converted for Gas storage (not the most attractive industry perhaps, but potential for large cash generation that could boost the northern and eastern remote abandoned ports?
There are ideas to service the Arctic Ocean route but it's on hold now I think, but I think tourism is the only way to make something serious happen there since the fishery quota system is preventing newcomers to enter the industry, and infrastructure like piers don't come cheap. But as for this town, I do remain hopeful :)

How interesting to hear about Hjalteyri, also that it has a place in your roots. It certainly has great charm. We've passed it early January in thick snow. What an interesting history and how it connects to your own family. I can see there is some potential there. I found an online story about a pilot plant set up there in 2022 by Íslandsþari to experiment with kelp farming.

Recently I read in the news that Iceland decided to stop the whaling now. A smart decision in my opinion, I think living whales are much more valuable for the tourist industry in Iceland than dead whales. Plus its improving the reputation of Iceland in general.
Now its only the Japanese (and some Inuit tribes on a very small scale) who are still doing whaling, while trying their utmost not to speak about it. Lets see for how long they can continue that, despite the world wide opposition.
I agree, it's a messy industry and whale watching is getting really strong :)

Such an interesting place, is the lagoon natural or man-made? I can't help wondering how such low-lying places will cope with a rising sea-level, it would be very sad to lose them and all their history.
It's a fresh water lagoon, very shallow, and yes, we would like keep it as is :)
@@JustIcelandic I would never have guessed fresh water, especially with such a narrow band of land between it and the sea. Is there a paper on the flora and fauna in the lagoon?

We don't need to farm it :) it's plenty of it already, exported and sold locally as well :)

I am reading old Scottish social history and there's a bit that says there were times when fishermen feared to leave due to the large amount of whales just outside the harbour , and even more unbelievably whales were so common they were originally hunted from land ! imagine what has gone for lamp oil !!!
Also Icelandic houses look way better than what poor people live in here .The uk housing stock is barely fit for purpose and are made to give energy companies big profits !
