Grindavik was one of my favorite day trips when I was serving at Naval Air Station Keflavik in 1979-80. Iceland never disappoints as a place to explore. Sad that the town is basically a wreck. Hope things stabilize enough for the fish processing to resume even if the towns folk can’t return. PS - We use to get fresh fish at Grindavik for the Friday and Saturday night fish fry at the USO on base. Highlight of the week in Winter. PS2 - Thanks for showing the town. Everyone focuses on the eruption and not enough on what the ground failure has done to a beautiful town. The lava berms are also interesting. PS3 - Thanks for making / posting video.
@@TimeWarpIcelandThat steam plume at 4:38 in the video on that hill. Isn't that where those more explosive eruptions happened with the recent eruption last week Wednesday?
With all the news footage, aerial coverage, interviews and assortment of media I have come across, this is the best video BY FAR giving a sense for what it feels like to go through the devastated town of Grindavík right now. Well done Karl!
Thanks for keeping everybody informed TimeWarp .The whole world is worried about you all . Happy to know the majority of Icelanders are enjoying their homeland and doing well . Looking forward to your next report . Kudos from Vanessa in Albuquerque , NM USA 🌏🌋
Really love the honest, legal coverage as someone who is currently visiting and wishing we could see some of it (safely). Thanks for giving us that opportunity
I really appreciate your content! My son and I visited Iceland in 2022 and were so inspired by the entire country. You are helping us stay connected to Iceland and your videos feel like you are welcoming us into your home. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Excellent, heart-felt reporting. I wasn't sure what to expect and found great integrity in what you reported and documented on video. Thank you for your persistence in gaining access to Grindavik and showing the world what is happening. Well done!
Brilliant content dude. For all the time and effort, we are glad they had an Icelander telling a story about the volcanic activity. Not some external media outlet trying to sensationalise the eruption. If the Civil Protection Agency had any sense they would allow local Media outlets, i.e. local RUclipsrs and bloggers 'Just Icelandic, Hlidermenn etc access to tell a story on Icelandic life much better than a Newspaper editor with ulterior motives. The tourist industry is very important to Iceland, let the story of volcanic activity be told by local media, they are a trusted source. I find it difficult to get accurate information on the volcanic activity, and only trust local sources. The volcanism affects them, as it does every Icelander. Every Icelander understands the danger visiting the active locations. If they misbehave, they never get back.
There definitely should be passes reserved for social if they are telling useful stories not just messing around. And have all the right equipment and guidance like I did to get arround safely.
For those of us who love Iceland and can't see this up close, this is very much appreciated. Maybe your next video can show some fun tourist activities to show how this isn't affecting the whole country. I always love fresh Iceland travel content.
I had never been in a police car either, until I was coming back to the NATO base from Reyk on New Years Morning 1997. Drove the whole 50km, my buddy passed out in the passenger seat and Keflavik cops got me at .07 at the base gate. Better there than in the US. Aside from that...my two years in Iceland were the best years I spent in the Navy.
Thanks for your effort!! For icelandic people maybe a volcano is a half normal thing, for the rest of the people is something incredibly!! You have a lovely county, thanks for sharing it with us
Very helpful, thank you for this. We're booked to come to Iceland this summer, and want to be helpful and respectful visitors. We stand behind you Iceland ❤️
Fascinating footage and information about this town. It's truly sad to see what's going on there. I feel really sorry for the people who were living there before. I've passed through Grindavik multiple times during the first eruptions in Fagradalsfjall in 2021, when I visited the volcano area 4 times. It looked like a very modern, well-organized, happy town. Back then, I was already scared something bad would happen to the town. The worst case scenario became reality. It's hard to imagine what's going on there.
your video presents the unquestionable sadness the people of Grindavik must be feeling....it presents a view of the devastation in a truthful manner...thank you
I live close to St Helen’s in Washington State, which last erupted before I was born. I would love to be able to hike near the eruption when I’m there, but I grew up with stories of people who died from not taking the St Helen’s eruption seriously. So if it’s still unsafe when I visit, I won’t get close, and will be happy to have visited nearby. Thank you for all your work in getting this update
Great job Karl. It’s good they gave access because this is the authentic info we who love Iceland can connect with. I’ve been telling people to still visit with the help of your channel. Thank you for your persistence and for being you ❤️🙏🏾
Great content as usual! And it's great to see the channel growing up to almost 4K after 2 years. I think I joined the party after the video of how to move throgh Reykjavik.😂🚂 Saludos!🇵🇦
Oh wow. That's one of the first videos I actually tried making a good video. I spent hours and hours on that, especially the scene I got run over on that scooter. I could probably do that today in minutes. Thank you for following all this time. I appreciate it.
Great take on the situation from someone who clearly cares about the people and land affected by this volcano. It's important to remember it's not just here to entertain those of us at the end of a broadband link on the other side of the world!
It was lovely to see your shots of Grindavik. We were in iceland 11th - 19th December, and got as close as any member of the public could on the transfer bus back to the airport. It was spectacular to see. We will most definitely be back, we both fell in love with Iceland
This is very helpful! I'm going to Iceland in May, but have no intention of going where I shouldn't. I've been following the news, but this by far, offers the best insight into what's going on. I have a much better understanding of the situation. Thanks to you and to the people who had the wisdom to grant you permission!
Great video! I appreciate all of the efforts that you went to in order to give an accurate description of the situation at Grindavik. My prayers are with everyone who is affected by these eruptions.
Thank you Karl for the considerable effort you went through to get this footage. Really interesting to hear about the hoops you had to jump through to get access. And if it's any consolation, it's not just you that has problems with interference while flying their drone - Iceland FPV (aka Isak) frequently does too, although I guess you already know that. Take care and stay safe!
Yes, this perhaps shows the difference between amateur and a professional. It's harder than it looks to fly close. My drone supposedly has a 5km range but I couldn't get anywhere near that. Also difficult because of a 60 Metre height restriction. I suspect Ísak gets permission to go higher on occasions to get there.
Not yet. Best way to keep up to date on that is to see when the blue lagoon opens. When it opens you will inevitably be able to get close to the lava fields.
Alert. Boom. Eruption showing now on Grindavik cams. Tons of molten hot lava from a long fissure. Started anout 40 minutes ago. New Eruption started at 12:46:55PM Iceland Time. 13:46:55PM GMT Summer Time. Oh great goodness. The fissure eruption is not the same as the previous with nine vents. No sir-ry! This critor of an eruption is more the size of 19 to 29 vents. 3 Times the size of the previous.
