    Give it a few more months, Iceland's engineers will figure out how to drive steel piles through lava to make bridge foundations and drop precast spans on them so the blue lagoon doesn't have to close any longer than the time it takes for toxic gasses to clear. No more waiting for lava flows to become hard enough to support a road overlay and cool enough not to melt tires.

    I live on the Big Island of Hawaii where we deal with eruptions from Kilauea regularly. The last major eruption was in 2018 and that one took out hundreds of homes and covered a large area of the southeast portion of the island in lava. One of the biggest losses to locals was of the "hot ponds" area in lower Puna. It was basically a warm pool by the ocean's edge, frequented by many locals and tourists alike. When Pele's lava covered the hot ponds it was a huge loss for us, and to this day people mourn the loss and reminisce about all the good times spent there. In Hawaii, there can be no consideration for manmade interventions like they are doing in Iceland. Here, Hawaiians revere Pele and her lava is considered sacred, as is the aina (or land) that she creates. So to try to redirect or stem the tide of lava is considered sacrilege, and those who choose to live in areas vulnerable to Her eruptions know full well that they are taking a chance that they may lose in the end. Many who lost their homes and properties were decidedly stoic about it here, since they knew all along that ultimately it is Pele's land, not theirs. Having said that, I admire Icelanders efforts to redirect the lava to protect their natural and cultural resources. I kind of wish we could have made some kind of similar attempt to save Hot Ponds, and also Pohoiki, the only area accessible for fishermen to launch their boats, and a place beloved by locals to enjoy the beach and local park. There, Pele took out the boat launch, but gifted us with a huge, broad, new black sand beach. Nature taketh and giveth according to Her whims . . .

    • @peachBloom
      @peachBloom 5 дней назад +5

      Icelanders protecting the power plant is a top priority. This cold island depends on the power plant for electricity and, more importantly, hot water , which heats all of the homes and other buildings. The Blue Lagoon is just a bonus for tourism revenue. In Iceland, taming the lava is a matter of human survival.

    • @stonew1927
      @stonew1927 5 дней назад +2

      @@peachBloom Good points. Still, I wonder what hawaiians would do if Pele came for the main town on the island, Hilo, which also lies in the path of a different volcano, Mauna Loa. When the town was last threatened over 100 years ago, legend has it that one of the priests chanted prayers and made offerings to the volcano goddess, and the lava flow suddenly stopped just on the outskirts of the town. If it were to happen again and Hilo was threatened, would Hawaiians intervene practically, like Icelanders have? I have my doubts.

    I'm glad you mentioned the drastic, irreversible change in the landscape around the BL. I visited Iceland's most famous critical infrastructure more than a decade ago, and was surprised to see in your videos how much it has been expanded. I arrived very early by bus direct from the airport, and the place was quite empty the entire time I was there. Since I was alone, I spent much of my sleep deprived soak looking beyond the low wall to the water on the other side, speckled with innumerable little islands of black lava, the mountains in the distance a beautiful dusty pink and tangerine in the pale light. At the time the pool and building was a fraction of the size they seem to be now - I don't imagine that you could enjoy the landscape at all anymore thanks to that sprawling complex, much less now that it is sunk behind 20m high lava barriers. I look forward to your next video documenting this hubris.
