From about 9 minutes with the music and the quicker animations. Such a good edit. I've never been so excited about geology. Great video.
How much effort should we put into production quality?
fern: yes
Yea the quality is so good it’s better than my eyesight
Indeed, the looks on the face of goats falling to their death in a giant earth rift needs to be preserved for future historians on the coastline of Afar.
(writing that sentence without it being false is wild in itself!)
Omg. The animation is amazing. The earth splitting in two to show the superplume blew me away. I literally said “omygod!”
You should go all-in on the stuff you obviously love to do. That superplume animation blew my mind. Reminds me of why I love science and art so much. That should be a “short” or part of a shorter video. It’s a #1 hit.
@@webderek Look up Mel Wagner and Thomas Overbeeke, they did the 3D animations.

As a geology major, its amazing to see this kind of information about faulting and strike/slip faults presented in an interesting and palatable way, me and my fellow geologists appreciate the effort the team put in to make something, normally specialized, accessible to the average person. Keep it up!

a "vlog type" Fern video is a thing that I never knew I wanted
Very moved and amazed by the resillience of the Afur nomads, living in harmony with the power and uncertainty of an active rift zone.
I really like that you managed to put both humour and serious parts in here, that you talked both about a bit of the theory behind this phenomenon and had an expert voice appear while also not disregarding the people living there and talking about them for a bit. You've achieved a really well-rounded mix for a video this short that still delivers quite some information. I could keep watching for hours. Great work!
WOW GREAT ANALYSIS IN SUCH A SHORT READ. DIDN'T NEED TO SEE THIS VIDEO AS THIS WOULD HAVE SUFFICE Txs🎉
I'm jealous I'll never be alive to see the whole split. But I bet that some people who see the end of the split will be jealous of me for being alive to see the beginning. What a time to be alive.
Yeah,am from Uganda, lucky to see the beginning and i think my 200000th grandchild will be the one to witness the outcome of it.
Makes me think about the fissures of Pangea and how mundane they must have been at the beginning of the end. How insignificant something looks, resulting in the formation of oceans, end of a mega ocean, etc
Sadly this will not get to that point! However, I know better to tell you why. But it’s amazing to see this!

Vali did a fantastic job of explaining things on-site, and his expressions really tell you how awesome the experience was.
That said, i'd prefer if him to film a little bit more what he sees and a little bit less his face
@abalcerzak1931 Yeah I agree
Would have been more awesome to actually see what he was looking at instead of his face, but that's just my opinion... 🤷♂
Seeing Vali s face when he first saw the rift was just amazing … his observations just made the video… explains the feelings and the energy of the place . Incredible.
following the graphic of the magma upwelling, his description of walking there was really haunting. i forgot myself for a second and was scared he would actually break through the crust

I am a teacher and today I was teaching continent - continent drift.
I was looking for good videos to show in my class.
Surely I am going to use this one, and will also recommend your channel to my students.
I would like to point out tho, that its not "happening again" like he claims (9:25), but that it is constant and doesnt stop and start. It is quite disappointing how high quality the videos are and then they have silly little factual mistakes that show that it hasnt been researched quite as well as they appear to be (It's not specific to this one unfortunately). Still great quality overall, but it ruins it a bit for me.
Edit: fixed slightly wrong wording on quote and added timestamp for it.
@@reedthorngag1810the timestamp is completely off
@@reedthorngag1810 I think they are talking about the separation tho, as for a long time continents have not separated. They are not saying continental drift is happening "again"
@@reedthorngag1810 the timestamp is about 10s off. Also they were talking about the rift opening up the continent of Africa, like it did with pangea. It wasn't about continental drift itself, ofc that is continuous.

Thank you for the statement on 19:06 they really embrace the spirit and resilience of their home. As an Ethiopian, seeing one of my favorite RUclips channels covering the Afar region was the best thing ever. Thank you Fern and @valilevi
The part that gets me here, is the resilience and adaptability of the people who live there. It is a mighty thing, their determination to remain on their land while it is undergoing such dramatic change, and to adapt and overcome the issues that come with that change. That is inspiring, and humanizes this story about the Earth's geographical changes in a great way

I am from Ethiopia, and this month only, just five 4.6 magnitude earthquakes occurred in that region, and earthquakes are not that often for us, therefore I believe something significant is happening.
I think, in general, earthquakes this year seems to be very common. Just in Japan and near region there are several larger earthquakes, including the New Year's Japanese earthquake (USGS: MW7.5) and the Taiwanese quake (USGS: MW7.4) several months later.
@@PrograError I agree, global seismic activity has been notable this year. However, Ethiopia typically experiences few earthquakes, so the recent increase is unusual and could suggest something noteworthy is happening.

New to the channel. It just randomly showed up tonight. Wow. I was gonna go to sleep. But here I am
I remember visiting the Afar region in 2019. This brings back so many memories - the incredible landscapes and people, the boys with Crocs and Kalashnikovs, the camel caravans, going to the salt flats on the Eritrean border and sleeping on the lip of an active volcano (Erta Ale). It was a truly humbling experience. The only vehicles on the road were the white Toyota pickups of the tour guides and red Chinese construction trucks. I remember how excited our tour guides were to show us a new road that would cut travel time to the volcano by 2 hours.
"Chinese construction trucks"
That's a whole different story within itself.
Why?
@@tonykinsey8933for new road that cuts travel time down to 2 hour. I'm joking but, Ethiopia and sub Saharan Africa have severe infrastructure deficit. Simple thing like a road can increase their quality of life a lot, you can see it in the video.

As an Ethiopian I can tell you that Afar is a really magical place. It has a landscape which is nowhere to be found on earth. You should have traveled more, you would have encountered active volcanoes, yellowish and greenish sulphuric lakes and landscape, a land full of salt and more. Afar is also where the oldest and most complete humanoid fossil, australopiticus afarensis (afarensis refers to afar), which was one of our ancestors, was discovered, its also the reason why Ethiopia is called the cradle of mankind.
