IMO, Me & Sarah Jane is like a MINI Suppers Ready in terms of the way it's structured. In both songs, It gets better with each new section and we are rewarded with an amazing climax

This is my favorite song of all time. I could say so much about it, but it would probably be incoherent to other people, so i’ll try to put it as simple as i possibly can: Not a day goes by where i don’t listen to, or at least think, of this song. It’s so special to me, & i feel so drawn to it, it’s insane. It’s both the most “me” song there could ever be, & the most “trio era Genesis” song there could ever be. I don’t really have to say it, but Tony Banks is a genius, & i wish more people knew who he is & about this song. I dunno where i’d be without this song, it’s so beautiful, & like i’ve said before in many different ways, means so much to me. I know you’re probably not reading this, but i wanted to end this comment with a thanks: Thank you, Phil, Mike, & Tony, for your impact on my life, your wonderful music, & everything else there is between me & you guys that i can’t think of at the moment. It’s a bit silly to say this about people i’ve never met & never will, but i love you guys so much, & that will never change.

    • @Venatrix_Games
      @Venatrix_Games Год назад +6

Prog and ska even. There's an irony to that as ska was part of the punk era that was a response to the big complex "waffle" (punk talking that, not me) of prog. Genesis managed to bridge the gap between prog and pop better than anyone... until they dropped prog pretty much altogether on the next album. Although for me this song slightly weakens in the second part and becomes a more "standard" Genesis song. A damn good one though.

Lyrics to this iconic hit: 🔥👇
Written by Tony Banks, The Legend.
The fires are burning in another land,
Don't start counting, don't start counting.
Colder and colder, the ice is moving closer
    And it gets me down.
Going round and round and down the same old track.
Pack on my back, going swiftly nowhere,
Heart in my ear beating like a drum.
    Where will you go?
    All by yourself.
(Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah.)
And now i'm standing on the corner.
    Waiting in the rain,
But then in sunlight without warning,
    I invent a name,
    Me and sarah jane,
We had a special thing going,
    Me and sarah jane.
It was a time of love and laughter,
    It wouldn't come again,
We had our round of joy but after,
    Then began the pain,
    Me and sarah jane.
We had a special thing going,
    Me and sarah jane,
    Sarah jane.
    Searching for a clue.
    Traces on the sand.
First i'm flying, going round round round,
Then i'm sliding going down down down,
Doesn't matter where i start i always end up
Falling through those same old crowded rooms.
    Me and sarah jane,
    We had it coming
    All the pain,
    Walking down the streets,
And finding nothing is the same,
And now the city lights are dimming one by one,
It costs too much money to keep them all on.
    Me and sarah jane,
In silence walk along the shore,
Tears of joy and mocking laughter,
    Words lost in the wind.
    The tide was rising,
    But there we stayed,
We had no fear of dying
    We weren't afraid.

Microfiction story inspired by Genesis's “Me and Sarah Jane”. Story by Ranjit J. Souri: A lonely homeless man has essentially lost his hope of ever having a good life again. Drunk, he wanders the city. ”Going round and round and down the same old track … pack on my back … going swiftly nowhere.” /// He sees a woman standing up ahead, whom he fantasizes is his lover from years past, whose death he never got over. He reminisces sadly about this lost love: “Me and Sarah Jane / We had a special thing going / Me and Sarah Jane / It was a time of love and laughter / It wouldn't come again / We had our round of joy but after / Then began the pain / Me and Sarah Jane / We had a special thing going / Me and Sarah Jane.” /// His walk takes him onto the city beach: “Searching for a clue / traces on the sand.” He walks into the sea. As he continues walking, the water gets deeper and deeper. “First I’m flying, going round round round. Then I’m sliding, going down down down.” /// He comes to believe that he and his beloved were always doomed: “Me and Sarah Jane / We had it coming / All the pain / Walking down the streets / And finding nothing is the same.” In the end, he just can’t do it anymore. He tried for years after the death of his lover, but he just can’t keep trying anymore: “And now the city lights are dimming one by one / It costs too much money to keep them all on.” /// As his life slips away in the depths of the water and the depths of his heartbreak, he takes some solace in the hope that maybe he will reunite with his beloved on the other side: “The tide was rising / but there we stayed / We had no fear of dying / We weren’t afraid.”

I don't speak English but I can understand. I think this is the perfect interpretation of this song.
This is a masterpiece to me. The very best of all songs.
      Thanks you.

Love this album. Don’t get why it is so maligned by some Genesis fans? It still has some old proggy sounding tracks to it.

They just completely changed their sound but pretended they hadn't. This was the end of the real Genesis as they started making middle of the road soft rock/pop.

I can imagine an 80’s variant of The Lamb, with this being one of the songs. Sarah Jane being a character Rael would have a brief encounter with after imagining her.
