Lyrics:
You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger
I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turn into a shining band of gold
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
But I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
And you will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your flesh to alabaster
When you find your servant is your master
And you'll be wrapped around my finger

Staggering musical talent, genius songwriting, beautiful videography, and no soul-less auto-tuned vocals. That is why this song stands the test of time.
Well said. I’m in love.
From a songwriting perspective, this is a masterclass in dynamics. Each of the three masters up their game in the 3rd verse, building the song to a crescendo that’s essentially unmatched in popular music. It’s not about volume. It’s not about tempo - but it is (as Jeff Porcaro would say) about “lope.” The song leaps ahead in the third verse - starting the with bass line, under the “Devil and the deep blue sea behind me” lyric - that’s a perfect “on ramp” to what’s about to come. Stewart plays hi-hat and rim clicks up to this point, but then erupts with tasty share fills, kick drum and ride cymbal (on the chorus) that elevates the song. Andy’s (added) guitar part sounds like an alarm blaring: it’s subtle, but it’s a great guitar “hook” alerting listeners to the upcoming chorus. And the lyrics leading into the third chorus are among Sting’s best (and that’s saying something): “I will turn your face to alabaster: when you'll find your servant is your master: you'll be wrapped around MY finger.” What a brilliant twist! The whole song comes alive, with each musician playing an equal part in building the dynamics. This is how songs can, and should “move”. It’s not quantized. It’s not even about tempo. It’s about chops, mastery of instruments, and songwriting. Thank you Sting, Andy and Stewart.
The Police never gets old, every song still a big hit to me
you are soooo right!
They are seriously underrated. Just as good as any other great band from the 80s but rarely mentioned among them.
Even Peanuts?
@@matthewb9955 The Police were actually one of the biggest grossing bands in the 80s. They weren't even in the "just as good as any other band" club they were in a league of their own both in live ticket sales and income which is why they aren't mentioned among the others; they are not comparable, particularly when the musicianship in the 80s was on the decline due to the increased use of sampling and drum machines and less of a need for actual talent.

@janeydever752 yes, it is
Came here from Rick Beato's conversation just to hear that lyric that makes Stewart hate this song so much!
"I will turn your face to alabaster..."
An incredible change of power. It went from “I’ll be wrapped around your finger” to “you’ll be wrapped around my finger”. When I found the true message of the song, it just hit so much harder. Truly incredible.
This is not some ordinary song it's beautifully written and meaningful as well. I love the way metaphor at the end of this song. Truly masterpiece.

Fucking love it when the guitar changes and the drums kick in towards the end, pure musical energy, love it
That moment, exactly
Same!
If you listen closely, this is the moment when the lyrics change too. It changes from him being the guy running for her (I'll be wrapped...), to the guy becoming the "master", letting go (You'll be wrapped...) and reclaiming his power. Even the listener feels the shift in feelings!
Yeah, Copeland had such a killer snare sound, just cuts through and rocks the whole tune.

If you want to understand why some of us love the 80s so much, try to find even one song from any era that sounds like this. This kind of experimentation was the norm. Compare this with the autotune sameness of today.
Lyrics that really made us think, meaning of things that wasn't easily deciphered for us, how great this masterpiece is, That's what I call music!
3:18 The way the finale builds up is phenomenal. Goosebumps. Always.
Props to Sting's bassline. That's what's building the climax
It's the absolute best...then Stewart starts going off at 3:33 and it's just incredible.
I always get this vivid image of the former master in a dark room, with the servant's voice booming from all directions, taunting him, saying "You'll never find me!" And then he strikes in a flash of light.
Devil worship tho
There is a reason for this, you can't outrun the devil and the deal you made. You think you can, so sting wrote it in hopes he was more powerful and could leave it all behind. You cannot, the song puts a spell like most that's why it is magic, evil and powerful. It's why we listen over and over. Look at the most repeated section on the RUclips line..it starts at 3:18
The 80's, kids. Where musical genius lived :)

When you find your servant is your master... Absolute gold lyrics
In other words, what comes around. goes around.
More like power struggle
Stewart Copeland’s drumming is...sublime.
At 3:30, in the softer “Devil and the deep blue sea” section, and right after the next line, “Vanish in the air you’ll never find me”, Copeland brings it all back in with a single snare flam, and it’s so impeccably tasteful, so effective, so impactful in its simplicity...and so very perfect for the song, that it’s stunning.
So many other drummers would have tried to fill that space (or really wanted to) with a busy, thundering (and yawningly predictable) huge drum fill...
But Copeland? Nope.
With that one flam on the snare, he “says” more than any 20 piece kit drummer could ever hope to present by pounding out some “big” fill, and rounding half a dozen toms in a pseudo Phil Collins “In The Air Tonight” style.
Part of being a great player, particularly those that play as part of a band, is to play in ways that best serve the song, instead of serving themselves (and their own egos) with a “look how many push-ups I can do!” bragging style in their playing.
Copeland is an amazing drummer to be sure, and it’s not that he can’t play technically complex fills or drum patterns, (because he absolutely can), but...he’s also a great MUSICIAN, because he has that rare gift of playing in a way that is always so very tasteful, and with parts that always serve any song he’s playing so incredibly well.
IMO.
🙏
Nice observation. I'm going to have another listen.
That single, potent, explosive flam is the pivot point of the track and is simple, subtle genius. Watch the recent Japan version too for more of it when Stu comes down from the huge array of percussion to pick up the bridge on his kit………just awesome.
@@nicprs5109 - thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check that out. 🙏
The other thing about that snare flam that I forgot to mention, is that Copeland doesn’t (predictably) hit a crash cymbal on the downbeat after it, and that makes the flam all the more elegant.
Sometimes (often, in fact), it’s what ISN’T played - a drum fill, a guitar lead, a bass riff, etc. - that can be far more tasteful (and way more effective and impactful) than any fancy drum fill or shredding guitar riff could ever convey.
Stewart Copeland is a master of dynamics, and part of that mastery is recognizing both when and what NOT to play, and in letting a song breathe by allowing an exquisite sense of space to exist.
IMHO.
🙏😊
@@donnythompson408 ruclips.net/video/43l4ksaD3vA/видео.html. I completely agree with you. And as I reflect on all the drummers I’ve listened to over my life……it’s quite possible that Stu C is by far the most exciting and dynamic……because he’s so different…. And I love some of the greats. 🙏

dear, DEAR 80s. :)
Yeah, but keep Thatcher where she's at now.
@@brocanova I was thinking the same, except I am American so I am talking about Reagan.
Excelent Words mi friemd

Old is Gold❤
Brought tears to my eyes as I remember the dark period of my life in 1983. Just had my son & had the baby blues, saw it on MTV before replay & RUclips. Has a Bob Marley vibe going on there. Coudn't get enough. Music does transcends all.
yes, there is a floaty ethereal reggae vibe to the melody
@@AlejandroMS67 A perfect description. You nailed it.
The good ol days of the real MTV back in the day
MTV was like a great drug back then! We could not get enough of it. To actually see your favorite artist in a weird or silly video was soooooo much fun! :)
Yes, its even in the same upscaled 240p definition
Say that again! Viacom claims that it had to change the format to "remain competitive". How can it remain competitive with the garbage it shows now?
Does Mtv even play videos anymore?
@@curtisalexander7035 I don't watch it anymore but I don't think it does.
The production on the drums is just perfect. Doesn't get any better.
im the lucky owner of the drumset used in the video, on of my favourite Tama sets among my collection of 12 sets.. .. so this video has suddently a lot of meaning for me... love it
@@tmjensen69 Did you end up with the complete set, hardware and all or just the shells?
@@DrummingMoose shells .. 2 bd .. 1 snare.. 4 toms and 2 floortoms .. and some imperialstar hardware pedals.. and hihat stand
@@DrummingMoose got some pics of some of my kits on face. Thomas Michael Jensen .. Mr Tama
Stewart Copeland is his name... He has also done the intro music to The old Television show Equalizer and The George Lucas's Ewoks.... Just google his drum work along with The Late Great Neil Pert...🙏RIP...❤
Copeland shines, yet remains in the background. He was genius in this song. Summers is excellent too.
Man, imagine a 23 of this generation loving this era of music, and the Police being one of his favorite bands of all time. Not constrained by the type of music most young folk in this generation listen to nowadays... Oh wait, that's me ❤ let's go Sting!
Side note: Oh, and I'm also a black male from the "hood", so talk about breaking social norms.
The 1980's were magical. I wish we could go back and show EVERYONE but we can't. All we can do is ask them to listen to music such as this.
I feel you
@Juan Perez I think it's safe to say that Trump is NOT the "new Reagan". Reagan let Paul Volker set interest rates where they needed to be, in order to control price inflation. He didn't get on prime time TV with David Brinkley and beat the shit out of the FED for not printing enough money to finance "bailouts for anyone with a pulse". Reagan was not a socialist while it appears to me that Trump is one. Actions speak louder than words.
To this day, those candles are still burning....
We will never forget you, The Police!
Yes sir
These are the only police id call if i was in trouble 😁🤦
This song is art, and it has mystical undertones. Gets to your soul, quickly.
My home gym has the same setup. I, too, like to do jumping jacks among my many candles.
I guess your workout is smoking hot !
Was waiting for this comment had to scroll just a bit to get it. Thank god I didn't have to leave the comments section disappointed.

🤣🤣🤣
Nothing returns me to my teen age years sitting in front of the TV watching MTV more than this song. This song is pure nostalgia. When I hear this song I’m 17 again with not a care in the world. Why did the 1980s ever have to end??????
Take me back NOW
All good things must come to an end.
Agreed, youth is wasted on the young CM
my god.. u NAILED IT !
I saw The Police on the Synchronicity Tour on Valentine's Day 1984 in Cincinnati. Great show. If you haven't seen the live verison by Sting with Rufus Wainwright on vocals you must. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/6scVohi0TYI/видео.html
This is so "Miami Vice"🌴
One of a few songs that never get turned off when it’s on the radio! That baseline still kicks major ass!
I Love Sting his Music really Great one of the Ledgends
I had my 8 yr old son in the car with me today and they played this song on the classic radio station. When it finished my son said daddy play it again. Warms my heart that some kids of this lost generation can still appreciate wonderful music like this as we did in the 80s.
I’m 13 and my favorite song is Synchronicity II. This is my second favorite.
Good taste young man!
Awww!🥰
