What do you think about washing a coin with all natural soap and water just to remove some tarnish then very gently dab dry with a soft towel, but without rubbing?? Do you think this would become noticeable if the coin were to be sent in for grading?
When I was a young collector who specialized in U.S. cents (a dollar would get me 100 cents out of my change), my mother used copper polish on all my wheat cents while I was at school one day. Luckily I couldn't afford any key dates back then, though I did have some semi-keys like 1924-D and 1911-D. I still have those coins after 45 years.
Something I have done as a newer collector to avoid mislabeled or misidentified coins is creating an "odd" container. If something seems different but I can't identify exactly what it is I put it aside in my odd container. As my coin knowledge continues to increase, I revisit these coins every 6 months to see if I can now identify what's going, or use online resources better to identify any errors.
I know You’re at 99.9k right now, but I want to say congrats on 100k! You are one of the most insightful guys I’ve seen here on RUclips, you are always willing to help people and I think that’s pretty cool. Here’s to 100k more!
If you can find someone that can open your packages with bare hands I will hire them. I had to go to the local fire dept. and borrower their Jaws of Life tool to break in on of your packages. :) :)
Great advice! I remember an ebay listing I read years ago for a $10 gold eagle coin where the seller claimed to have used scissors to cut into the package and left quite a gouge on the coin when he first purchased it. I've used your 2x2 coin flip removal trick for years to avoid those staples too 👍

Great Common Sense instructive video Daniel! I have been collecting a long time, and I picked up some real tips for myself in this video, 1. Taking it out of the cardboard holder by your snap method. Not that I have ever had a problem, yet what you are stating is the best way to take the coin out. 2. The foil method of keeping those older VG Seated Liberty Dimes, Barber Dimes, and Mercury Dime in my Dime books. Can't get any of my larger diameter Capped, Bust Dimes into the smaller hole though...LOL.

Thanks Daniel ! I did the unthinkable one time and cut through a proof set when opening a package. Yea, I was upset. I am much more careful now. 2x2's I tend to cut the cardboard but your ideas look better. I picked up a nice flat stapler at Office Depot. If you are putting the 2x2's into a plastic 2x2 page, the staples wont get hung up when sliding it in. If I package a coin in a 2x2 I most generally, but not all the time will use one larger size. IE I don't like how the 2x2 for a penny leaves no room and sometimes makes the coin stick up into the plastic. I might use a penny 2x2 for a dime, use a quarter for a nickle, etc. Just depends on what it looks like. If i do label a 2x2, I am sure to be putting on what the coin IS after fact checking and knowing what I have. Blobs n such, nah. When ever I mention the word plastic in my posts, I am saying coin safe "plastics"
Silica pacs at walmart are super cheap and the ones i buy are as big as a half gallon of ice cream sized container. They last for about 6 months in my neck of the woods.
I have received packages and coins from people that smell like cigarette smoke. I got a Whitman coin book from someone on RUclips and it smelled so bad I had to trash it.
Great tips as always! You got me thinking about breathing, sneezing, coughing while working with coins I already keep a box of gloves within arms reach. But now I think I’m going to put a few of those surgical mask that I have collected over the last couple of years right by the gloves using a mask while working with your coins could very well minimize the chance of moisture from your mouth and nose getting onto the surface of the coin. Perhaps this will create a new controversy. To wear a mask or not wear a mask. Cloth mask, surgical mask, or even shield. Regardless, I think I’m going to make that a standard practice from now on dealing with rock coins especially.
I wear a mask when handling raw coins, simply because someone else will own those coins after I am dead. I like the idea of my coins being in good condition a hundred years or more from now.
I do to, and have never had a problem. What Daniel is suggestion though makes better sense. I am always worried I am going to scratch the coin with those stupid staples. Personally, a silver coin inside of those cardboard holders with staples is not a way I want to go.
To overcome the problem of coins falling out of folders I have started using the thin parts of the gasket that come with the round coin capsules, and just put a piece in the bottom or top of the hole and then insert the coin into the folder and they fit perfectly
great advice, but it gets tough the way some of these packages are wrapped and leave you no place to start. Typically, I just tap anything that is in the package so that it's as close to the bottom as possible, then I try and gently clip the top of the package, hoping nothing is up there (I also feel it to try and tell if anything is still there as well)......so far it's been pretty good for me.
I use an Exacto knife, very carefully, to open flips. Like you are using a pencil to pierce the film I use the knife and make a small incision partly around coin, this way I'm not pressing the coin at all. Yes, you have to be careful and pay attention. Thanks D!
I got my great grandfathers coin collection and he personally made special holders for his coins it was made from leather like a leather pouch. Maybe it was because of the Coins was gold coins , of the 1800's .

I always put a question mark next to my labeled error only as an indication that I don’t know for sure. Probably not great but it’s a great indicator for me to get it looked at. Anyways….Congrats on getting to the edge of 100k! Hope you make it soon!
I usually just collect the pretty ones that come in capsules/collector boxes. Is it ok to leave them that way? Specifically the Pobjoy mint ones in the leather cases.
...and that can take all of the fun out of it. For example...Not every Dealer is against peole cleaning their coins. I know a few that are O K with it; a lot of it(to them)is *how* you cleam them. This should be a fun hobby; Some take t too seriously.

If you cut a coin opening an envelope, it might be warranted. I cut open all my mail with scissors, including coins- but I identify & isolate the coin within the envelope first, & cut off an opposing edge. Not recommended for people who can't find solid items stored within soft paper packaging 😅 but I will say that I don't cut anything containing paper or metal foil currency, like goldbacks. This would be beyond not smart, im already a dummy cutting parcels with coins. One day im gonna cut a small coin that i didn't feel thru the envelope, just for being an idiot about it lol. This is all really great advice I must say, with all joking aside
To keep coins from falling out of my folder, I cut a of strip of 30# paper as thick as the coin, and put it on the outside edge of the hole. Push the coin up against the paper and just work the coin into the hole. The coin should fit nice and snug.
Shimming coin folders- I use newspaper strips long enough to reach both coin edges and less than a quarter inch wide. Newspaper margins are ink free so I use that to cut from.

This is why i like the plastic snap together 2x2
All you need is a staple remover to take out the staples - that’s not even an issue
