I have a lot of the coin sets but I bought them on the secondary market at a greatly reduced rate. I don’t pay over $10 for the sets that have the half, quarter, dime, nickel and penny. That would have been great but impossible because I'm older! HAHA It wasn't funny when I was a little guy down in Austin, Texas, and I pedaled my bike about 8 miles from our house to a coin shop in downtown Austin. I had to do it and get home before my parents got home. So I was pedaling my butt off, and on one of those Schwinn one speed balloon tire bikes. I got no help on hills. Just my 11 year old coin obsession. I had a few coins, but not many, to trade. I think I even had a 2 cent piece that didn't look too good, especially after I "cleaned" it. Then it looked horrible :( I took my few coins into their shop for my 20 minutes in the coin world before I had to hit the road back home. They did trade my coins. Yeah I got a flying eagle coin, as I recall. But it didn't seem like I got much for my trade of several coins plus the little bit of money I had. Then off I went, excited with my first coin shop trip, even though I felt sort of ripped off (I don't think I really was so much looking back - I had high hopes, though). But I did get home almost in time. My mother asked me where I'd been (she was just getting home from the University so it was no big deal) and I said, "Just out riding!" haha Not, "Well, I took a quick 16 or so mile ride into downtown Austin!!' hahaha

All this dose is limit the collectors that will buy them and yes lowers the value. To many that's enough to not buy it. But give any object enough time and the more rare it becomes thinking changes. The bad side to that is you may not be alive when it happens. But in the end if you enjoy it, how much it's worth no longer matters.
That ancient coin looks like something I see in the shows in the $5 "pick'em" box, and the kind I used to be able to buy for $100/100. In one of those $100/100 lots, I did get an extremely rare coin of the empress Galla Placidia once. I see some of those coins actually slabbed by the regular grading companies go for about $50 at auction, but that one in an envelope is a Christmas gift the non-collector buys for his collector friend and overpays for.
I agree with you and before watching this video I was checking out your list of grading companies to look for fakes and such. Thanks this is a great follow-up.
Oh, so I had one dime I broke out of one holder and put it up on my Ebay store. Thanks for the holder tips towards the end of the video and now I know why some coins are not selling and I need to make some changes. Great video and thanks again for the tips.
First time here and I enjoyed the video very much. I just collect US coins... I know I pay too much but I buy them from the US Mint. Just for collecting and saving them.
Very informative video. A lot of things are just common sense. The best thing for you to do is educate yourself about the coin/coins you want to buy so you don't get ripped off.
I usually only buy coins if they are loose and not in any hard plastic case and only from my local coin shop where I can actually handle the coins before buying. The only reason I buy silver coins is to make double sided coin rings out of them.
The only thing I like about the Littleton silver eagle is that the silver eagle get a nice toning around the rim . Every single one I have is developing a purple natural toning around the rim on the reserve
To Be honest my dear Daniel, i just started to collection the coins in 1997 and in 1998 i converted to paper money because in my time there was no dealers around me to buy the beautiful coins or know more news about the latest news about coins and their latest update and indeed the real problem for me was the storage of them and then i changed the coins in paper, but if i find something beautiful i may buy it, but this coin will be very limited and with the beautiful details you provided and shared with us i will be more careful when i buy a coin in the future ^_^

Yeah also for bars, I bought a 10 gram gold bar recently that was in a Perth mint holder. Everything was perfect about the holder it was identical to Perth mint holder but the bar was fake. I didn’t have my test kit with me and I brought it to a jeweler and he didn’t want to break it out of the holder at first because he was convinced it was real, sure enough it wasn’t. Anyway great video very informative thanks a lot!
I agree with your logic on pretty much everything in this video except maybe the Silver Eagles, at least for cases like myself. I wasn't the one who bought the coin; my grandfather did. I "inherited" the coin in its packaging and all, and it's still unopened. I feel like taking it out of the package would mean I'd either lose it or inadvertently harm it somehow. Since I'm not the one who got suckered into buying it, I think I'll save it for a PCGS bulk-grade with other things I find and see what MS it gets. But that's just about the _only_ time I could see having these, to be fair lol
thanks , Truth teller. Not many of you out there especially as dealers. But unfortunately, my journey led me to the same conclusions. Old coins have a melt value if silver. Ancient coins are turning up like they were minted yesterday because they were. Gold However still very attractive and will sell if verified. Casing not withstanding.

Can't call it a monopoly for literal reasons, but it sure feels like one. PCGS and NGC have the coin grading market sewn up tightly. Just ask owners of ANACS slabs if you don't believe it. Too bad, really.
@1:39 - "GSAC - basically it's just an alphabet grading company...like SGS or INB" And in my head I was finishing his sentence with, "LIKE PCGS. & NGC!" It's a complete bunch of B.S. hogwash....super elitism at it's finest....but honestly it's people like this here Coin Dealer RUclipsr, @coinhelpu , who feed right into that B.S. and keep that class structuring alive & well. I get it, it's comfortable and easy for them at this point, but deep down many prob. truly relic in the fact that they are part of THEEE elite -- b/c of their memberships, reputations, know-how ...and god forbid they were to try and shake up the system...SMH
@@DiZzAstA LOL ... super elitism, eh? Believe it or don't, but small, independent dealers like Daniel are the exception to the rule of overpriced corporations like Littleton. Aim your anger at the ripoff artists who abuse the grading system. These are the crooks stinking up the internet and giving the hobby a bad name. Folks like Daniel at CoinHELPu are exactly what we need.
My wife started my coin collecting in the late 90''s with 2 silver dollars purchased from a local coin shop. $100 each. I went to eBay and saw the same for roughly $50 each. Yes, they were in slabs. I never bought from a coin shop in my life after seeing that difference.
I saw the same package that you showed first at my LCS on Monday, kinda funny! I did buy a NGC graded 2002 ASE for $21, I hope I didn't over pay, I payed a little more than $2 over spot!! Have a GREAT Day!!!
Daniel, could you do a video on correct ways to judge coin rotation. I made a template but want other info if possible...thnx Rick. Very good video...thnx
Get a great deal on a SEGS 1937 Lincoln listed as MS65. I noticed the rim was sharp and square. Was actually a proof. PCGS gave it PR63 BR. For $28 a good deal. Just luck and sharp eyes.
Some of those fancy holders does make it a little more tempting to buy something different or give a false sense of value. At least that's how I feel about them. I have bought some in auctions and then regret it when I get them in hand. Coins are normally not even in fair condition.
The ONLY numismatic coin one should buy, that's encapsulated, is a PCGS rated with the number on the back that you verify on line at the PCGS site...Anything else is dubious at best... Sadly, those that get taken by these scams don't have the knowledge to know they're getting ripped off and they often never will until they go to sell it. I shake my head at noobs getting into silver buying stuff from TV or Magazines...Caveat Emptor...
Years ago I found a well hidden wheat penny laying in the dirt by the road, dont know how long it was there, when I cleaned the dirt off it I noticed the copper appeared to be coming off then I saw the year 1943. I still have it.
1943 pennies are made of steel because of WWII. If yours is actually copper as you say, you should take it to a dealer TODAY. That is extremely rare and worth a ton of cash.
I paid 13 dollars for a set in plastic. Walking liberty 50 cent, Standing liberty quarter, Mercury dime, Buffalo nickel and steel penny. I bought because the Standing liberty Quarter is almost mint. It's a 1927.
I encapsulate my loose coins merely to protect them from further handling. Now this may not help the coin at all or it could. The coins in my collection will never be handled by me and my friends. Simple plastic? capsules help with the coins display IMHO. I am what you might call a mug collector as I have no idea what I am doing with the simple exception that coins in my collection will not be handled.
I think if they can be bought cheaply enough, they are good to give to young collectors. "This is what you DON'T buy." When I was a kid I bought some worthless crap and I wish I'd had a mentor to tell me to avoid it.
I wouldn't agree that a damaged coin doesn't bring more money. I just attended an action last Sunday and watch a 1936 buffalo AU 50 bring $9 right after it sold a 1936 buffalo EF 40 with die crack sold for $56... I wouldn't have paid that ever but that's some people intrest I guess...
Honestly if its not in a pcgs, ngc or anacs soapbox holders, i just buy coins raw or in the cardboards flips lol my grandpa kind of fell for those multi coin sets and told myself i will never buy them 😅
I hate to think how much money my dad wasted on stuff like this. After he passed away and i cleaned out his house there were tons of coins like you speak of and have shown in this video. I swear there are over 500 sacajawea dollars in those sealed bags. The coin store I went to told me to take all the coins in the plastic cases and the bags and just spend them. Least he had some good coins that are worth alot of money. Now they are in my safe for a rainy day.

Can't call it a monopoly for literal reasons, but it sure feels like one. PCGS and NGC have the coin grading market sewn up tightly. Just ask owners of ANACS slabs if you don't believe it. Too bad, really.
ATTA BOY Scottie B. CALL IT AS YOU SEE IT. Which in my opinion is right.
Recommendation to coin collectors:
Do not buy a set of multiple coins for over 20$, unless all the coins are *VERY* underpriced.
I want to buy a few coins from change checker, website could you let me know is it worth buying some coin.
My wife started my coin collecting in the late 90''s with 2 silver dollars purchased from a local coin shop. $100 each. I went to eBay and saw the same for roughly $50 each. Yes, they were in slabs. I never bought from a coin shop in my life after seeing that difference.
One coin shop and you stop. you can't judge them all by one.
Thanks, Daniel. You just saved me a tonne of money.
You're welcome
Those are the same Silver Eagle holders that I buy from the hobby shops to stack my silver eagles, Morgan's and peace dollars.
I saw the same package that you showed first at my LCS on Monday, kinda funny! I did buy a NGC graded 2002 ASE for $21, I hope I didn't over pay, I payed a little more than $2 over spot!!
Have a GREAT Day!!!
No that is below market sell value
@@CoinHELPu Ok. Thank You!
Cleaned coins are beautiful.
Very valuable information. Thanks
Always a great video, Dan. Thanks for the reminders and for educating the next generation of collectors!
thanks dan.....appreciate the information....i know alot of people that need to see this one.
Falcon Coin Company and Littleton send me coins and sometimes I buy them but most of the time I return them
Daniel, could you do a video on correct ways to judge coin rotation.
Thanks for the video Daniel you know what you talking about nice to know not to be taken appreciated that!
A good video from a honest man
Asking sir why don't buy it what should do with it nice video keep in touch thanks
Great advice 👍🏻👍🏻
Good morning, a great learning video!
Nice Dallas Cowboys colors sweater you have!
I had these types of sets in whitman or other frosty cases at my shop....pulled most they just dont sell. Hard 2 even give away
So true. Many way's to make a $10.00 coin look much more valuable than it is.
The only display coin i have is a silver proof ike dollar was bought about 15 yrs ago for $10
Some of those fancy holders does make it a little more tempting to buy something different or give a false sense of value.
Great info for novices like me. Many thanks for this information.
My pleasure!
@@wasacrazy8 I got a better look at it, it's steal in color. Old & scratched but definitely steal colored...
Great content. I really enjoy these types of vids, so worthy of taking notes. Liked and sub’d.
I paid 13 dollars for a set in plastic. Walking liberty 50 cent, Standing liberty quarter, Mercury dime, Buffalo nickel and steel penny. I bought because the Standing liberty Quarter is almost mint. It's a 1927.
All that cheesy packaging will also take up scarce space in your safe too.
Thanks for the help U coin guy great info!!!
I get what your saying but there are a lot of error collectors regardless of values. I do completely agree with trashing the trash holders.
You got a love the beer goggle coins. They look better from 10 feet away.. lol
I think if they can be bought cheaply enough, they are good to give to young collectors. "This is what you DON'T buy." When I was a kid I bought some worthless crap and I wish I'd had a mentor to tell me to avoid it.
Good video with valuable information
Thanks for keeping it real! 👍
Could you do a video on Platinum Proof Eagles........I think they are interesting coins and would like to hear your opinion.
I mentioned them in a video on the low mintage. No one really cared much for that video.
I only buy PCGS, that's just me. Great video.
A die crack is not a cleaned coin. Isolated events do not make true statements for the whole.
Honestly if its not in a pcgs, ngc or anacs soapbox holders, i just buy coins raw or in the cardboards flips lol my grandpa kind of fell for those multi coin sets and told myself i will never buy them 😅
Great video! Thanks, Daniel!
Especially off of ebay. Lmao "proof set" yet you see scratches on every coin.
WAIT..... well not paralyzed but ....yep hypnotized again... Thanks for sharing !
😂😂😂
Love you showin that littleton stuff 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Great advice. Thank you Sir.
Very welcome
