  • This video will be focused on the grills themselves and not too much on the food I am grilling. I will talk about the specs, prices, availability and my experience grilling with all 3.

Found my 1st gen. Sportsmans grill on craigslist, cheap. Was rusty but restoring was worth it.

THIS is insane!!! $100, $200,$300 for what is little more than a gussied up Hibachi. Crazy!!!
Throughout the 70's & 80's you could buy a Hibachi cast iron grill between $20-$30 almost everywhere. At the grocery store, hardware stores, dollar discount stores, Walmart, , Target, sporting goods stores, even at gardening centers.
Perfect for apartment dwellers. I would set mine on the banister of my balcony, cooked everything under the sun all year long. Made my own charcoal starter with an empty #10 tin can and a strip of steel riveted on.
Cheap, ez to use, just enough coals to cook a full meal for one or two. After buying my 1st full sized Weber grill, I lamented getting rid of the fun little Hibachi

Great video, Luis. These grills are amazing… I have an hibachi grill that resembles the lodge sportsman grill, I believe the original patent has expired and due to that other foundries are making copies… mine was made by a traditional Brazilian foundry called Santana, they make very good stuff and their “sportsman grill” copy is beautifully made… I also believe that the patent expiration is probably the “true reason” why they decided to update the design…
Your videos are great, keep it up.
    Greetings from Brazil!!!

Love my pro, I do use the tin foil liner and lump coal. I don’t have issues with the ash drawer jamming up

The tin foil/ aluminum foil is an idea from The Culinary Fanatic. He deserves the credit for that but I do appreciate the support. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment

I have both the discontinued Sportsmans grill which I’ve owned for several years, and the Kick-Off grills a recent acquisition…the new Sportsmans Grill Pro doesnt float my boat. That said I have always liked the Sportsmans but I REALLY like the Kick-Off grill much better than I expected. Good review Luis…thats a lot o’ meat your using as “props” for this video, and now I’m hungry! LOL

Can I ask what you don't like about the new pro? I have 2 of the originals which I use often but there are a couple things I don't like. The round "Lodge" logo in the center of the grill surface serves no purpose except making stuff burn since it's a hot spot. I prefer the more rectangular shape of the new pro grill vs the oval shape, and the ash cleaning seems easier with the new pro. I'm considering buying a couple of pros to replace my originals since Lodge is running a sale now, but I'm open to feedback.

Great review. I have the KO grill and love it for the backyard and throw it in the truck for vacations and trips. Use of a foil pizza tray under the coals makes for quick clean up. I'm debating to get myself a SM grill and haven't pulled the trigger yet.
    What table are you using?

    • @luisj.castironcooking
      @luisj.castironcooking  2 года назад +1

It’s a custom built table for Dutch Oven cooking and for skillet cooking as well. You can place wood on the inside of the grill and I have heavy duty painted grates for my skillets. So I can cook with charcoal or wood.

Original Sportsman’s Grill is much easier to maintain/clean. I have to have a removable charcoal grate. It enables me to line the fire bowl from the bottom to the top edge with grilling aluminum foil. Just cut out where the charcoal air vent is. My older original still looks brand new after 17 years.
    The Kickoff and Original Sportsman’s - 👍
    Sportsman’s Pro - 👎

The charcoal gets jammed because you use too much charcoal at once, just use a single layer, it burns efficient and completely and the chimney keeps more charcoal on hand to add if you need it later

Meat too close to the fire. I’ve seen this over and over again-people end up over cooking their meat on these contraptions. Nothing like a Proper Texas bbq pit. We make them small enough to cook for 4 people for about the same price, maybe a bit more. These Lodge contraptions just overcook your meat. I’ve seen it twice already on two videos. Charred chicken, wings, steaks, fajitas, burgers, sausage. Fire is too close to the meat. Get yourself a proper Texas bbq pit.
