    I wish Lodge would make a dome lid with an adjustable vent/chimney as an accessory option for this. It would make this grill even more versatile as a camp site slow smoker.

      @smithn.wesson495 5 лет назад +2

      You are exactly right.....I flat out called Lodge about this question and I got told the reason why they do not include a lid for the Sportsmans Grill is because of the amount of extra cost and time it would require to manufacture. The big increase in cost would decrease their sales, so Lodge decided not to do it.

      I was thinking the same thing. and I thought the lid of a deep Turkey roasting pan could fit quite nicely. I'm going to give it a try when my sportsman arrives.

      I have found that the Le Creuset oval grill pan works well. It is just a little smaller than the surface of the Sportsman's Grill. I found mine at a thrift store but they can be had on Ebay or elsewhere. Not a popular pan so doesn't command typical Le Creuset prices.

    We had an old Sportsman grill when I was growing up. Pop sold it after buying a larger Weber charcoal grill. Sure do miss that old grill. The burgers and dogs tasted sooooo much better.

    I want to compliment you for doing this video. I have heard about the original cooker and the company that made them. I'm a huge Lodge fan. So seeing the comparison between the two was extremely enjoyable. I have been wanting to purchase the Lodge version for many years, maybe this will finally be the year. In addition to the traditional foods that you would expect to be cooked on this wonderful design. I believe it would be truly wonderful to use for making "Smores" .

    Great comparison! I just wanted to mention that we inherited my grandfather's BSR sportsman and I am guessing it's a little newer model than yours as it still has 4 legs, but it *does* have the sliding draft door and groove for it.

    I have what seems to me to be a hybrid of the older bsr version of this grill. It has the same pat. no. on the door and looks like the older bsr model, it has a draft door, but my model has a sportsman scene on the fire door. Thanks for your always informative vids

    • @TheCulinaryFanatic
      @TheCulinaryFanatic  10 лет назад

      Michael Impson - I would LOVE to see what you have. I think the version you have was actually made by Lodge. Is it the duck scene?

    • @impsonm
      @impsonm 10 лет назад

      The Culinary Fanatic Thank you for your response. My grill does have the duck on the fire door. After watching your videos I was ashamed at the condition I have let it get to. I bought it from Williams- Sonoma around 1994 or 95. I live on St. Thomas and the grill has been to the beach many times, and the salt air, even at my house, has taken it's toll. I have used it extensively in the past, but haven't used it in a long time. It's not in too bad of shape. The grill it's self has some rust damage, the body and the doors are relatively ok, some more cleaning will bring it around. You can't really see it in the photos but the fire grate is in very poor condition. It has a long crack right down the middle on one side. I'm thinking of contacting Lodge to see if I can get a replacement. Your videos have inspired me to try and restore it. I couldn't figure out how to include the photos. Thank you

      TheFinkFarm - We'll see. You know, when I was unpacking the Lodge grill, I thought it would be foolish not to record the differences between the two while both were still clean. I had always seen the Lodge grill from a distance, but I had never gotten a chance to examine it closely. The new grill is SO much better than the old. I am thinking about just buying a second Lodge grill and not cooking on the BSR.

    I have the new Lodge version. I have never seen a vintage version in the wild around here. For the same reasons I bought a big roaster from cabellas that fits on the top really well . I dont know if lodge even sells a roaster of the same size. I am more into functionality than brand names. I have plenty of vintage iron with the usual big names but I also use my Taiwan and other country of origin iron if it meets my needs

    Lodge is hands down the best American made iron cookware you're going to get on a working man's wage. I often sand down the interior surface of my new Lodge pans and re-season them. I like a smooth finish to my cooking surface. With the Lodge grill, you can turn that top piece upside down to cook hotdogs. They fit just right between the grates to keep them from rolling around. It calls for charcoal, but I always use Mesquite chunks. Makes killer ribeyes with that wood flavor.

      Malcolm McLaren - Doing a video on this soon. Before cooking, I line the grill with foil, leaving the draft door open. This makes clean up a breeze. After cooking, I scrub the grate with a stiff plastic or steel brush, depending on what I have cooked. In one action, I remove the foil, ashes and charcoal grate. After discarding the ashes and foil, I rinse the charcoal grate, spray it down with Pam canola, and toss it in the oven on 500 for 30 minutes. The oven is not necessary every time, but spraying this piece is. It is the part most susceptible to rust. If the grilling grate needs it, I spray it with Pam, wipe it off, and put it in the oven. If the grill needs it, I will put it in the sink and give it a rinse and a scrub with a plastic brush. I like to keep things like this looking nice, but it's probably not necessary every time. When the grill is dry, I spray a little Pam on it, inside and out, and wipe it completely off. After this, I go ahead and line the grill with foil, getting it ready for the next use.

      Cast Iron Chaos - Thank you SO much. It was fun to make. As I unpacked the new grill, I thought it would be foolish not to record the differences while both grills were clean. You and I have the same rule about not buying pieces that we won't use. I am going to violate that with this piece :) I like the new grill so much that I will save to get a second one. My wife will use this before she uses my big charcoal grill. But it was funny - as I was making this video, I felt like I kind of had a 'responsibility' to make it. It is important that the history of things like this be recorded.

    Don't forget the griddle. The lodge griddle fits right on top with those notches so it doesn't slide off.

    I second Phoenix's request, the sportsman grill is great but I worry about caring for it properly.
