I’ve been working on the wiper cowl of my ‘81 and I hope the fresh air vent door can be removed as you described since there must be a ton of leaves, dirt, and a 7mm socket in that area. Yup, I lost one to that black hole.
I can reach into the driver’s side with the shop vac hose without any major issues, but the passenger side is practically inaccessible.
Anyway, have you considered using Flex Seal to prevent water intrusion? It’s available both in spray and brush-on. I used it to seal the battery and storage compartment of my ‘81 and it’s super easy to work with.
    Just an idea. 😊👍🏻

Hey - Good luck getting your socket back! I’m sure you can fish it out with a magnet if worse comes to worst.
I am considering using flex seal. That stuff is great - and a good use of modern materials that won’t really change the look and feel of the car much, but that will function much better than the materials of 40-50 years ago.
      Thanks for the tip

Wonder if you could stick your phone in the opening and shoot a picture to see what it looks like and to make sure you have gotten everything out before you seal it up? Just a thought

I can feel just about the entire area and it all seems clear, but yes, getting some picts or video wouldn’t hurt.
When I say “seal,” I mean non-permanently. I’ll probably just make a plug with foam around the edge - or use the original door with some insulation tape over it - something simple that can be restored (for the next owner)

Are the doors activated by a cable or vacuum? Thanks.

@@inell6 Pretty sure it was cable, but I’m not using the doors. I have the Right plugged and the left is open for now, but I may just plug it too, since I’m installing a jeweler AC system. There’s a vent in the rear to allow out and I can always crack a window if I want fresh air.
