"...and the iconic “we.” logo of the Timex Weekender as a reminder that any boring old day can become unforgettable if it’s spent with our favorite people." Well, it was totally uneccessary.
Wow. It's not like the old Weekender was a particularly "good" watch, but you could respect it for what it was, given the price (usually under $40 retail). A reasonable plain watch that was excellent at pass-through strap swaps, without the military look of a field watch. But I kind of hate everything about the new one. The dial is less interesting, without the chapter ring, and the minute track markers too chunky. The cyclops and date feels wrong--part of the appeal of the Weekender was the grab-and-go of it. Pick it up off the shelf, swap the strap, and you're out the door, so having a date which can be wrong just betrays the point. The handset is busier and less interesting, the plain black and red had better contrast, and a little pop of color. I think the font is worse, too rounded. It feels more like a computer font. I don't hate the weekender text under Timex, but the giant "we" doesn't work at all. I guess the crown is nicer? Yeah. The crown looks a tad better. The old Weekender had a bit of a Bauhaus sensibility, a classic charm. The new one feels more like a product of the digital age. And I keep coming back to the thought that it's both busier and more complicated, while being less interesting. Even the dial color. The slightly off-white cream of the dial is softer, more pleasing than the harsher and starker white of the new one. It's like they've bought into the worst ideas about modern minimalism, and discarded a more aesthetically appealing minimalism from a century ago.
I have an OG weekender 38mm like your one in the video but in black. I love its simplicity but these new versions look worse in every way. The 50m WR is probably only a theoretical improvement. I misunderstood WR meaning when I first got into watches and have absolutely abused mine despite the 30m WR but guess what? It takes a lickin’ but keeps on tickin’.
IMO - if you really want a Timex (even vthough I agree with many opinions that the feature to price balance is way off), you're better looking at the Expedition Field and Scout lines. The case is slightlyvdifferent in shape, but all the other points are ticked: 38mm, 40mm, Indiglo, canvas or leather straps, multiple colors, pricing $63-65 USD. Lorus is a mess here in the US. The only "authorized" retailer is a Canadian branch of a Hong Kong company. They aren't in any if the retail chains here (Walmart, Target, etc.). Amazon and eBay listings are all shady grey market sellers. The only official Lorus sites I've found are in AU & NZ. And, it gets worse: if you find something you like on the main Lorus website and search for the exact model number, you won't get any matches. So, the only wayvto buy something exact is to find it on the AU/NZ site, and hope it's not a model that's only available in stores. At this point Casio has to have something equal or better to Timex & Lorus.
I myself have a Timex Weekender, the previous mark, which I got this year used from overseas. For all its faults, the Weekender has an aesthetic appeal to it which I think has been ruined by this new mark. First, the "dished" face of the old watch did make it easier to read, because the interstices marking the minutes are cocked up at an angle. This three-dimensionality makes it more immediately obvious where precisely the hands are. The new mark seems to have a completely flat face. Well done messing that up. Second, another video reviewer mentioned that the numbering on the dial of the old Weekender looked almost "analogue" in a way - subtly imperfect, as if it were designed the old fashioned way on a drawing board. This made the numbers more easeful to the eye, similarly to proper kerning and handmade page layout in old timey books. The new mark has "cleaned up" the numeration to an absolute digital perfection, matching the usual dreary headache of reading modern text. Third, the red second hand was attractive but also made it instantly distinguishable from the two black hands. Thank you for creating yet another few nanoseconds' eye movement to read the watch. This is the main reason why I never considered upgrading to the old "improved" Weekenders with their non-red second hand. Fourth, the old Weekender did not even had the word "Weekender" on the dial. Now the new text does little more than add clutter. Meanwhile, the things about the Weekender that DO suck have been left in. Would it have killed them simply to create a stainless case, especially for such a fuckton of extra money? And I can understand them not upgrading the noisy old movement, but again for such an increase in price can't they at least make the attempt?? I'll just hang on to my old used watch for a while. Weekender forever!! - as long as you wear earplugs at night.
That Lorus is so much better, starting with an Epson-Seiko movement and a titanium case. Timex only harvesting on the good old days for Americans only. And, as you mentioned, the Chinese companies blow this offering by Timex to pieces 😅
Maybe they could trick me into liking the idea of a "classic" brass case developing patina over time or something, but nerfing the Indiglo by making a dark dial and not even figuring out how to get the numerals to light up???
Hey Ben. I've been your subscriber more than a year now. I really enjoy watching every single video that you share. All the details that you point out makes me feel like as if I am watching a watchmaker himself. Also, my wrist size is directly the same with yours which helps me visualize how a watch would look like on my wrist as well. I really wanted to thank you for having a huge part on my watch choices in my collection so far. Also, I would like to ask you if you ever plan to have a join button on your channel as well. I would be more than glad to be member of your channel, if there was something like that. Again many thanks mate. Cheers 🙏
Yeah that WE sheit put me off buying it. 😂 That and the Customer Service I received from Timex. The crown rolled off of my Waterbury when setting the time. It took 2 weeks of back and forth e-mails just to get approval to send it in to Timex for warranty service review. I’m told if approved the turn around time for servicing my watch and it being return to me is anywhere from 3 to 4 months. 😂 WHAT! 🤣 Screw you Timex!
Timex... please, you make some of very beautiful watched in current time. They are sober to look at and easily accesible. Please take this video as a genuine critique as even I a Timex hate this over the top branding on dial and crown. Rather you could have made a designed symbol like with waterbury or expedition. That too in a corner where one has to look at it closely to notice the easter egg
Ya people probably think we're just timex or swatch fan boys and lying about liking or in my case not minding the loud tic but ya doesn't bother me honestly I can see why it does others. That we on the dial is a deal killer for me tho
I bought 6 weekenders because I liked the simplicity of them. I go out out of my way to buy watches that don't have a day or date feature. I consider that feature to be largely unnecessary. I can say I definitely don't like the new ones.
Anyone else feel like new one kind of sad looking? I don't know what it is but it just doesn't read for me at least a chill relaxed watch anymore. I think it's partially down to the minute track that isn't in the interior chamber compared to the new one where its just wrapped around the dial.
Not sure who they are targeting with these spartan watches with uncomfortable looking straps that have to go, right away. They look like they fell out of the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down.
Timex are overpriced to the extent that they must be taking the p1$$. I last bought an expedition field watch with EL backlight that didn’t work. Took the back off and tested it by pressing the contact directly. Lo and behold, the EL DID work, just the crown would not press in enough to make contact. Returned that pos tout suite!!
Nah, I just can't. That's way too much for this, and honestly I prefer the look of the original. The red accent second hand adds a pop of color and the sloped minute track adds dimension to the watch. Also, that indiglo is straight up horrid.
Too much to have the WE and Weekender on the dial, and the cyclops, yikes! This model of Timex is supposed to be simple and straight forward, but they did an unbelievably bad job of updating it.
What planet are Timex on? Brass cases are for watches of £10 and LESS. HOW they expect ANYONE to spend £80+ on a cheap nasty BRASS watch is beyond ridiculous, especially when you can get a titanium watch with sapphire and a superior movement for under £50 easily
@@mohammedrezin1488 How??? It's bras case, loud Quartz mov, design like a wall clock, low quality strap, no screw down crown... It's a waste. Buy a casio g shock or Duro for the same money.
WE for...WEekender ?
99euros for brass, mineral & ticking noise ??!! WHAT XD
And the brass is still using lead ffs
Strange, given they already put "weekender" below the Timex name
We can, der
I capitalized it "WeekEnder" in my head. But either way this seems like the most plausible explanation.

I got the 40mm old one today and your video confirmed I made the right choice. So, thanks for that!

Why even rerelease the weekender in any way if the new version can still be heard from clear across the room?
Yes, that was my only complaint about the old one
Agreed. What were they thinking?
Selling the Timex rubes, a $3.00 watch for $100.00!
@@thomasstratford6227 do you think it'll work?
I just got my plaid 38mm edition. I'm impressed. Guys, this so called "ticking loudness" complaint is untrue. Best $21 I've spent on a watch.
WE is brand new branding for Weekender. Timex also has a weird way of over embellishing their watch brands on the dials, see The Waterbury.
If you don't deliver quality, you can always play with text on the dial.😂
